I can not remember, we are in germany ever had an earthquake. It is horrible to see on the news channel what can happen at an earthquake.

At the US west coast that happens very often, right? What are you doing, when you notice an earthquake?

I don't think people that haven't been in an earthquake can relate... Oh and that ride at Universal is just crap... Fun but nothing like an earthquake.

Honestly imagine what it would feel like if the ground which you just take for granted that it will always be solid just started shifting underneath you. It can move slightly up and down or shift just side to side or a combination but it isn't solid anymore.

Oh and asking about what you do when one happens. Well it depends on how strong it is and whether you can get your feet under you. Usually you just scramble for whatever cover is close by. Thats what you are trained to do really and you just get on with it.

Oh and you haven't seen street lamps whip around until you see them in an earthquake... Man those things can move a lot without breaking...

A 3.6 might not be a big earthquake for Socal. However, when we had a 3.8 in Atlanta about two years ago, it was all over the news for like six hours. Earthquakes don't scare me if they don't last a long time and I wouldn't have known about it if my mom screaming didn't wake me up.

Japan gets 50 earthquakes a year.(more or less. I forgot.) So just be thankful you don't live in Japan!

The Loma Priete 1989 was actually a 6.7 I think. I was in my crib.

Only one I've felt was a few years ago, a 4.1 in Gilroy and it just made a sound. I want to experience a big one.

And per week, the Bay Area of California gets between 50 and 100. That's right per week. Most of these are in the 1 area, but a few are 2s lol.

YOU WERE IN YOUR CRIB? Crap I was in 6th grade It was initially a 7.1 but I think it ended up being a 6.9

and that little 4. in Gilroy sucked I was living less than a mile from the epicenter and we got quite a nasty quake where I was

Well, this is off topic in a way but is still a natural disaster. Yesterday, an F1 tornado hit South San Francisco...now that's getting kinda close as I'm across the bay. WTF are tornadoes doing here in the first place?!? According to the news, 3 tornados hit California this year.

Posted

Yeah but all of the tornados seem to be hitting up here =( I bet a tornado down there would make the air clear for like a minute though, and with any luck take Psyclone with it.

OH CRAP!! Three tornados at once! WTF?!? that cant happen. Is it just me or do i live in a place were there are no natural disasters at all? No hurricanes, tornados, volcanos, earthquakes?

Well, Florida got 3 hurricanes last year all in the summer, and i am going there in the summer. OH CRAP!!!

All people who believe Day After Tomorow can't happen, think again. That movie was actually based on a book, The Coming Global Superstorm, by Art Bell and some other dude. There are scientists who think that there will actually be a global superstorm, like in Day After Tomorow, because of Global Warming. And essentially, global warming will propel us into another ice age if the superstorm happens in the winter. According to them. Very interesting reading.

I'm glad Dallas doesn't have Earthquack problems, but it has other problems too. Too many thunderstorms, Tornado watches, and warnings. Flooding too in some areas, like the SFOT incident last year. Every year, my county has a few tornado watches, and possibly warnings.

No one around us has a basement

EDIT: Never seen a tornado in my life, but I want to for good photo opportunities. (In a good distance, of course)

Good thing N.C. dosen't have any earthquake problems!

But we have the whole tornado, hurricane, and stupidly large ice storm kinda thing.

You really need to check your facts. Probably because you're in the U.K., but someone from Africa could probably do better.

well, the worst in america was apparently in Alaska. It was like 7.2 and lasted 30 secs and there was soooo much damage done. Japan gets alot of earthquakes.

WRONG. It was a 9.0!!!!!!!

No, it wasn't 3 tornadoes at once. And it CAN happen. By the way, it was 4 freakin' hurricanes, and two of them hit me. Frances, we had the eye wall, I believe. I can't remember that much. But the eye itself was friggin' massive! Jeanne hit us between the eye wall and the outer bands, but with NO damage done at all. After the thing was over, I went downstairs, looked outside...there was nothing down! Power was still on in the entire apartment complex. Hell, it even gave the grass a bit of a trimming.

I was in my car, downtown San Fran for the Loma Prietta Earthquake .

Breaking glass, building parts falling everything shaking like crazy.

Not fun!

I traded that in to come back to Hurricanes and Tornadoes.

When I was in Colombia in 1997, there was a small earthquake overnight. Slept straight through it, woke up in the morning, I see all the frames in my aunt's house tilted and I'm like , what happened? Everyone said to me "did you not feel the quake?" I just stood there, baffled. The worst "natural disaster" I've been through was that bogus warning for Hurricane Floyd or one of those that hit New York City. They closed schools, so I was happy. I walked outside and the wind wasn't really blowing much for what they said was 70 mph winds. Shrugs...

I experienced a tremor a few months ago when I lived in Georgia...

"...and all I got was this lousy t-shirt."

No, but seriously, I did experience a small tremor... it was in the middle of the night, things were shaking in my room... but I just thought it was a thunderstorm... even though... it wasn't raining that night. So I went back to sleep... the next day at school everybody was talking about it... I completely missed everything...

I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A THUNDERSTORM!!! WHY ME!?!?

lol... anyway...

I really don't think there's a good way to explain just how it feels. You hear people say "Giant Truck, blasting, jello, etc.", but it just feels wrong! It's one of those things that you take for granted that the earth under your feet is solid...feeling it move all of a sudden is a really creepy thing.

Elissa "don't like them!" Alvey

Totally agree here!!! They are JUST WRONG!! Feels like it shouldnt be happening but it does! It amazes me how solid ground can move like that..SOLID GROUND I TELL YA!!!

I dont remember what earthquake it was but one time after the quake hit I ran outside and saw the pool sloshing side to side and water was going everywhere. I know I hate earthquakes but I kinda want to be in a pool when one hits. Surfs upp!! DINGY BONGWAAA!!!

Hey Soeren here is a tidbit of info about earthquakes that will help you understand them more. The closer you are to the epicenter the more violent the shaking is. Very sharp jolts occur up down, side to side and you think the world is coming to an end lol. The further away you are its more of a rolling motion with slight jolts. Even further away its more of a swaying feel!

Posted

And they don't all feel the same!

Some are this weird rolling or wave under you. Some back and fourth movement and others real jerky and move in all directions.
