SteveStL
It is indeed early. Assuming plans don't change, you will be able to figure it out soon enough. It has to be in prep for a Fright Fest attraction

What was the attraction like, just kind of a trail through the course of the river? Six Flags Great America did the same kind of thing at their Fright Fest a few years back and it seemed to work just fine, it was themed after creatures that looked like they belong from The Creature from the Black Lagoon, if that's what they're gonna do with this then count me in. prozach626
Just to keep from thinking inside the box too much with Thunder River returning as a haunt, there is another possibility. Thunder River could close down early for the nearby construction of another attraction. It may be a necessity to close Thunder River due to being in close proximity to a construction site. Although the haunt is more likely, this is just something to ponder. They could also be closing it early for refurbishment. I suppose we'll know soon enough. SFoG has been utilizing their Thunder River as a haunt for the past 3 seasons. The maze uses the outdoor queue plus the loading station (but not the trough where the boats go). They have kept Thunder River open until after Labor day here. A refurbishment seems like a more likely possibility but this being SF anything is on the table.... Vonni
Actually, I've always thought the overflow queue for Thunder River reminded me of a Haunt maze. I always thought it would make sense.
thisdougsforu
Using the whole area as a Fright Fest Haunt sounds like a great idea to me.
prozach626
Will crowds be insane tomorrow evening, or should we still be able to get in a few rides?
bluestreak
I'm not a local but was at the park today and noticed there's a concert that's sold out tomorrow night so I assume the place will be mobbed
HARLEYGUYJB
I wouldn't go myself. The Mercy Me concert is sold out and has been for a few weeks.
prozach626
Sweet.... That's the second time in a row we've had a chance to go, but decided not to, because the place was going to be packed. So far, we've only been able to go on one Saturday. Awesome for the park. Sucks for us. Thanks for the info. Edit: I still think we're planning on going for a few hours to cap the night off, because f*** it. We're going to be at Grant's Farm during the day, anyway. Even if lines are ridiculous we'll have a couple beers and hang around. What time is this concert?
rwilliam62521
This may be a long shot, but several years ago Thunder River was drained mid-season due to extensive work needed in the pump wells and on the impellers. Looked the exact same as the above photos and was down for about 2 weeks while being repaired.
Danrarbc
We've already been told it won't be going again until 2018.
prozach626
We had a good time at the park last night. Despite large crowds, we managed to ride Spinsanity, Log Flume, Superman, Boomerang, Screaming Eagle, and Batman. And of course... we each had a beer at JB's and split an 'All Star Iced Tea,' which was OK. Something is being constructed in between the two botanical shade tunnels between Freeze and Thunder River. The tunnels are completely fenced off. It's a large square building that looks temporary to me.

Stagman
Hey everyone. I'm a first year season pass holder who's been reading this forum all summer and finally decided to make an account. I've learned so much from the posters on here and look forward to joining the discussion. A few times while I've ridden the Boss, they've had two trains running but only had riders on one. The other train always seems to have some sort of weights in it and the ride ops say they are "weight testing" it. What exactly are they testing? Thanks

thisdougsforu
Hey TNT, are the haunts set up by park staff primarily or do you contract someone like HPI to build them? I've heard they work with theme parks around the country to set up their Halloween stuff and given they are based out of STL, I was curious. A long time ago they used to outsource Fright Fest to a company but I can't remember the name.

But they're likely warming the wheels up too, don't want a partially loaded train valleying with riders aboard.
