Incredible Hulk and Top Thrill Dragster. Enthusiasts' opinions on Hulk are pretty mixed actually, it's mainly the gp who consider it the holy grail of coasters. As for Dragster though, I just don't see what there is to like about a huge single-element coaster with a fast but weak launch, forceless transitions to the tophat, and zero airtime. The drop is still pretty good, but you don't get the true sensation of a completely vertical 400 ft drop due to the twist. I think Millennium Force's drop is still the one to beat.

A year or two ago I also would have said X, but fewer and fewer people keep raving about it as it ages.

I think all the hate for Rolling Thunder is only of a function of the condition it's been allowed to slide into; it was a great ride for many years. It had speed, airtime, made that loud noise you could hear throughout the park, and was even good run backwards. It ran pretty well this past summer and hopefully it will get the rework it needs.

That's in interesting thing about woodies; it's possible to have an 'I don't get it " ride on any of them due to maintenance, weather, or other factors that make these things tempermental. I had one on Phoenix this past summer on an early run on a "cold" train, but 10 hours later the ejection seats were back in operation.

...but I just don't get "Superman: Ride of Steel"...Call me crazy, but I much prefer "Nitro" at nearby SFGAdv

Me too. My ballot listed them as #3 for Superman and #2 for Nitro.

I don't think Tennessee Tornado is that great either - I've always said "just because it may be the smoothest Arrow, does that make it the best?". I, too, think its too short, and on this past trip it wasn't even as smooth as I had remembered (Nessie seemed smoother, so there goes the whole 'smoothest Arrow' attribute in my mind)

And while wer'e on the Steel Category - I don't "get" Millennium Force, Magnum, and the giant penis coasters aka Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster.

I also don't get High Speed Thrill Coaster.

I think too much attention is going to Steel Force. Whenever I bring up Dorney Park at school, I always hear Steel force is the best . Talon is better than Steel Force. Heck, it`s #2 of the four inverts I've been on.

(Batman: The Ride, Talon, Montu, Great Bear) Laser is extremely strong in forces. The loops aren't very intense, but the rest of the ride barely above the height of half of the lift. Lot's o' headchoppers.

Great Idea for a thread! I think there IS a difference between overrated and 'not quite getting it'.

For me it has to be:

Boulderdash

I even rode it during one of the 'omg, it's running the best ever' events. I think it's good, but it has that CCI roughness and not enough airtime for me.

We're all different I guess, because while I of course love airtime, it not a definite requirement, as is tracking or whatever. In the case with Boulder Dash my opinion of the ride was boosted just because of the setting the ride was built on. Like at the top of the lift hill you expect to be a 100 some feet in the air but your 10-15 and I enjoyed traveling up and down the mountain during the first section of the ride and speeding right next to all of the exposed rock. Also now that i've dipped back in to my memory (it's been since aug 01 that i've ridden it) one thing loved about it was it never really let up once. Which is something I really enjoy in a ride but I don't need it for it be on the top of the list.

Some of my favorite rides have been ones that are just different...Take Dragon Mountain at Marainland. While i've never met an arrow that I felt wasn't rerideable (I also don't fit to well into their OTHRs (long upper body), I really enjoyed Dragon Mountain because of the fact that a huge fricken mountain was built around the rides and it travels right thru the middle of it.

Although I have had many "I don't get it coasters" such as Magnum and The Beast. Although I finally got Magnum on my fourth trip to Cedar Point and The Beast on my second trip to Kings Island (both by riding at night actually).

One thing I really try to avoid when going to any park or riding any coaster is to try not to compare it anything I’ve done in the past and just to decide if I am enjoying myself at the moment or not, that basically made me decide what I believe deserves to be on my top list. Maybe that's why i've never had a favorite park or coaster.

--Robb "Who agrees with most people that Nemesis and Grand National are some of the best coasters in the world." Alvey

^ Most people voting GN still at number 19 in the world of woodens.

My main "I just don't get it coaster" Has to be X:\WTF at Thorpe Park.

The ride is just completely random, it's built inside a huge pyramid yet it's all "high tech", it goes backwards. It stops at random points of the track to pray you with mist...

There's just no reason behind it!

Dang, I have to say I'm amazed. Three pages so far and not one person has mentioned probably the most overrated woodie of all time. Of course I am talking about the back-raping, knee-gashing, head-chucking Son of Beast. As this is at my home park, I know it well and still refuse to ride. Oooohh, it's got a big hill, and to quote Derek "A VERTICAL LOOP!!!!" But the ride SUCKS. For those that have never ridden it, if you ever have the chance, make sure you go on that right before you leave PKI. It will destroy you and you won't be able to ride anything else.

As far as steel goes, I'm not really sure. I've ridden a bunch but none that stand out so oh well.

^I think the GP loves it since they can say, " It is such a fast woodie, and it like goes through a loop, and you can't find many like this. The other coaster in this park..I think Beast...can't come close to this."

There are some over rated coasters I have ridden:

Wood:

Cyclops-This is mainly on this site. This coaster was rough, and rather unplesant when I rode it. I got little air time, and the main drop was painful. BTW, what is with the age restriction for the last car?

Viper-even though this is my second favorite coaster, I still think it is over rated. The line can be over an hour in peak season. Sure it is smooth, but it is not that thrilling.

Steel:

S:UF-This coaster is fun, but is is a huge waste of space. The pretzal loop is the pest part, and this gets kind of old after the first few rides. This ride should never have the hour and a half wait it has. Sure it is a fun ride, but it is not that long.

Although I personally enjoy SoB. I would only say that I don't get a coaster if the vast majority of people rave about it.

That "I don't get it feeling" makes me feel lost when I get in a conversation with a other enthusiasts. It makes me look down to make sure I have my pants on.

Let's try to keep this back on 'track'.

Not Overrated, but "I just don't get it".

For example:

Overrated:

I understand why people like Shivering Timbers, I just think it's overrated.

I just don't get it:

I have no clue why people like boulderdash, I just don't get it.

Stupid Coasters:

SoB, no one really seems to care about this crappy ride!

I think anyone who has been many of the Top woodies just scratches their head about a certain coaster being ranked so high. You know what I mean, you have ridden it multiple times and just don't get what every one else sees. This doesn't mean you hate the coaster and had a horrible ride, it means you just don't put on that top tier.

The 2 coasters that fit into this category for me are Raven and The Comet (Great Escape).

I rode Raven at least a dozen times in 2004 during my one trip to HW including the last ride of the night. Yes, it got better throughout the day and I enjoyed it but never did it for me.

The Comet, I rode 6-7 times and again enjoyed it but it just didn't wow me.

Robb/Elissa: if this seems too much like an overrated thread just delete it

Even though I was too young to ride it when it was at Crystal Beach, I believe the Comet was better when it was along the water. My parents said it seemed like you were going to fly into the lake on the first drop.

I don't get the Raging Bull hype

It was fun, but it had NO air for me. Maybe I just rode in the wrong row, but I really didn't get anything out of it. It seemed to be braked AND trimmed WAY too much

i don't get SOB. .... it loops because.... ? to say a wooden coaster loops.

kinda silly.

and the loop isn't even made out of wood!

Not trying to get off subject, or start anything, but keep in mind, if we look at it like that, then the Coney Island Cyclone, Hades, Voyage, and any other steel supported wooden coaster wouldn't actually be considered a wooden coaster. Just food for thought. I agree though, it loops to say it does.

Anyway, sorry, back on track...

I think of 2 woodies I never got:

Thunderhead, yeah it had a lot of "airtime" but that was soooooooo GCI airtime, which barely qualifies as airtime at all. It was fast and it was graceful but I don't want my woodies to be THAT graceful. I MUCH prefer Ozark Wildcat, I beleive it accomplishes a lot more in a lot less space with less height and track.

Shivering Timbers, yet again it had "airtime" but all the airtime was just floating airtime (with exception of 4th hill). I just felt after a while it got repetitive, it takes out and back to another level, but the lack of variety of elements killed my fondness for the ride.

No, man, that's not what I mean.

Go look at the loop of SOB, it's entirely made of steel. it's not a wooden loop with steel supports. it's a freaking wooden coaster with an ENTIRELY STEEL LOOP thrown in the middle... heh

Ok going by Elissa's definitions scrap X:\WTF as my coaster. Everyone hates it.

I'd probably say Nemesis: Inferno.. I just don't get why they had to add Nemesis into the name. It completely makes people look at the two tussauds rides and compare them..

Strangely enough, X:\WTF was so bizare, that I actually liked it for the experience! Not like I was in any hurry to ride it again. It was just so.. so.. so.. yeah, whatever. Different would be a good word (being kind also).

For me, the 2 wooden coasters that I never "got" were the CI Cyclone. It was smooth, some laterals, some airtime (ejector) but that was it. Historically significant or not, I just don't "get" it.

The other coaster I never "got" was the Phoenix. (Been to 2 PPP) Nice park, nice setting, some air, no real laterals etc... I juz dun gitit!

Ditto * Infinity. I do not understand why this ride is claimed as it is. Any ride with trims is definatly better without, but, when does this thing ever run without trims?! I would assume they are always on, just different pressures. I find it hard to believe its ever run at full tilt which THEN it would be a cool twister but I doubt that ever happens.

Otherwise, JUST DONT GET IT!!

As for wood...Havent really been on a "hmm..." woodie yet. I usually draw a nice clear line in the sand whether I like it or not and its usually in line with most people.

It has before, and it was glorious. But that... was many moons ago. I still feel its a good ride, but nothing in comparison to what it once was.
