larrygator
I think anyone who has been many of the Top woodies just scratches their head about a certain coaster being ranked so high. You know what I mean, you have ridden it multiple times and just don't get what every one else sees. This doesn't mean you hate the coaster and had a horrible ride, it means you just don't put on that top tier. The 2 coasters that fit into this category for me are Raven and The Comet (Great Escape). I rode Raven at least a dozen times in 2004 during my one trip to HW including the last ride of the night. Yes, it got better throughout the day and I enjoyed it but never did it for me. The Comet, I rode 6-7 times and again enjoyed it but it just didn't wow me. SharkTums
Great Idea for a thread! I think there IS a difference between overrated and 'not quite getting it'. For me it has to be: Boulderdash I even rode it during one of the 'omg, it's running the best ever' events. I think it's good, but it has that CCI roughness and not enough airtime for me. coaster_type_of_person
I think that one of the coasters that everyone says is amazing but i hate is Superman: The Escape. Sure it wasn't really horrible but, I didn't get any airtime, and it barely went up the tower. I really don't see what the big deal is about it. So this would definitely be one of the coasters on this list. I have heard about it reaching the top of the tower when you are one of the first people up to the top of the peak. But i did that and it still didn't do any good for me, so I just wasn't amazed with this ride.
DragonKhan
I think that one of the coasters that everyone says is amazing but i hate is Superman: The Escape. Let's stick with woodies here... Coaster I don't get? EASY! Balder! I don't wanna get into the "Wood or Steel" argument right now. That doesn't matter in the end, it is a great ride with great airtime. But exactly that is why I'm so confused. All Balder has is airtime, nothing else! All it does is go through rather boring turns just to throw you out of the seat again. It just was boring to me. Are all coaster enthusiasts such "airtime whores"?!?! Everything else I pretty much agree on...
CoasterFanatic
Steel: Storm Runner - Rough. Horrible Restraints. Not what it advertised to be. And this was #10 in the 2004 Mitch Poll. TTD and KK - Everybody likes to rank these up at the top, but I still think that Xcelerator beats them both. X - Another coaster that most rank high, but it is just too rough for me to consider it a top tier ride. Wood: The Beast - I used to be a big fan of this ride, but i really can't see why people still insist that it is so great.

robbalvey
^ Agreed with all but Storm Runner. When we rode SR it didn't seem rough at all to us. *shrug* But yeah, the Beast? I just never got this one. And I just can't see if ever had being that great. Long flat parts, a big helix, huh? It's just not the type of layout that suits my tastes. Magnum is another one that I don't get. The last time I rode it, it was rough, it was lame, and by today's standards seemed much more like a "mine train" than a hyper coaster. I think we had better rides on Gemini during our last CP visit! I agree about Boulder Dash too. Never got those "amazing" rides, even when we were there for an event where it was supposedly running the "best." I really think people doing that "fake airtime" thing (we SAW people doing it) and then claiming it had the best airtime ever! And I'm like "did the RIDE give you that airtime, or your feet???" Anyway, great thread and why stick to just woodies? Mitch's Poll covers steel coasters too! --Robb
Hilltopper39
For a steel coaster, and I'll probably get shot for saying this, but Millennium Force just doesn't do it for me. I mean yeah it has a great drop, excellent first drop, but after that it just kinda flies around till it ends. I get no airtime out of the hills heading to the island, the overbanked turns are effectless, there is really hardley any variation of speed. The turn and buny hop parallell to the station is the only part after the drop looking for ward to. It's big and fast, but does nothing for me. Zand
The three steelies that fit into that category for me are MF, Nitro, and Medusa. MF is in my top 5, but only from my 1 night time front seat ride. The rest weren't anything special. Nitro was kind of weak and just some floater airtime (guess I'm used to S:RoS). Medusa was also weak and most people say B:DK is the weakest floorless they've been on, but I think Medusa is weaker. As for woodies, there are 2 I don't understand: Phoenix and Lightning Racer. When I rode Phoenix, I wasn't getting that much airtime and I rode in both 1-3 and the back. Lightning Racer just kind of seemed forceless and too curvy, especially after riding Wildcat right next to it.
Hilltopper39
Coaster's I don't agree with are Magnum, Storm Runner, and Beast. I thought storm runner was great, albeit a bit short but still great. Powerful launch, lots of speed, quick change of direction, and a great pop of airtime before heading into the zero-g roll and snake dive. Lots of fun. The beast and Magnum I think are both in the same caetogry of being good coasters that arn't as good as they once were, but are still fun. They both have great setting (on the lakeside, and in the woods), they both are long rides. The Magnum has really good airtime on the return run, and the Beast still has a lot of power and intensity especially thought the final Helix and the back stretch of the ride before the second lift. Both coasters are older and not as good as more modern Hypers, but I think both rides still have a lot to offer and are worthy of their rannkings out of, being fun, long, re-ridable coasters. (The beast wouldd be fine if they'd remove the magnetic trims every hundred feet and let that baby really roar!)
momo1tx
For Steel Coasters... SR always seems too short, and I hated the restraints. A cool ride, but I didn't get why people are obssesed with it. For Woodies... I never really got Grizzly. Grizzly was kind of cool, but it was rough, especially in the tunnel. I didn't get that "flying through the woods" feeling people claim to experience.
BiCoastal Kid
Really, we should stick with wood right no since we don't know the steel outcome right now. That doesn't change the fact that we may not get some rides. I mean, I haven't seen the results but I can still say: I don't see why everybody loves MF. It was fun, but it's not "amazing" like so many claim. The drop is really the only part thats worth anything, other than that it's just a bunch of oversized elements, and really didn't do much for me. If it had been tightend up a bit, it would ahve been much more fun to me. -Rock "Which is actually my opinion!"
ncf
Definately Cal. Screamin' and Nemesis Inferno, they both feel exactly the same from beginning to end, and that makes them really boring... I need some variation!
Scaparri
(The beast wouldd be fine if they'd remove the magnetic trims every hundred feet and let that baby really roar!) Amen to that Ross! Unfortunately though, it's been quite brake-raped and I don't find it to be a very good ride anymore. It's been slowed down so much that now it is pretty much a scenic railway. Nothing too exciting. Even the drop into the double helix as well as the helix itself has lost it's glory because of brakes. It's really sad because I've had some absolutely amazing rides on this. Great American Scream Machine (SFOG)- Though this didn't do terribly well in the polls, it seems that every person I come across that has ridden it just raves about the thing. I don't understand whatsoever. It's not bad, but I don't exactly find it to be awesome. When I rode, I had floater air at best, if even that, over the hills and the turns were taken a pretty slow pace. Just not that great of a ride to me. Thunderbolt (KW)- Once again, this didn't do terribly well, but I think we've all seen the discovery channel shows and the old pictures of people talking about this being the best wooden coaster on the planet. By no means a bad coaster, but the amusement industry must have been in a very sad state the day this thing was considered the #1 coaster in the world. ParkTrips
Awesome thread Larry (couldn't you have saved it? ) Suprised you didn't say GASM .. oh wait.. its ranked somewhere in the 70s. I can't really think of one, like I said in the other thread my top coasters came out almost in the same exact order in the final results.. other than I can say that I think Silver Comet deserves better than 41. DragonKhan
Why is everybody keep mentioning the Beast?! It's on #50!!!!!!!
Scaparri
^Because 50 is still pretty good out of how many woodies there are in the world, not to mention there are a lot of great coasters that aren't ahead of it. On top of that, there are still quite a few people who rave about it. This doesn't have to be completely related to the poll results.
larrygator
Thunderbolt is another that I had heard such great things about and was unimpressed back in 2001. However ,I had I very good ride on my return trip in 2005. I have heard similar thoughts from others who don't often frequent KW so I can take out of that this coaster must have its share of bad days. arrowfanman
Ghostrider--While riding in the front has taught me to tolerate the ride, I never understood why it was so raved about. It does a good job at creating an "out of control" feeling, but I have never regarded that as an entirely good thing. Its because of a horrible bumpiness and underbanked, unconfortable turns. I think that one of the coasters that everyone says is amazing but i hate is Superman: The Escape. I don't think I have ever heard someone call Superman: The Escape amazing in the past 5 years...lol. But...I am going to reserve my steel coaster "I dont gets its" till the poll results are finished.
peteb
I thought I liked Storm Runner back in 2004, but when I rode it August 2005 I just couldn't believe how rough this thing was. Every change in direction was accompanied by a head slam into the restraints. We rode both trains, different times of day and the same. Lots of people getting off holding their heads. What I just don't get is what happened in only one year.
Fry
As far as steel goes, Nemesis is the most over rated pile of poo ever made. It's really no more exciting then most other inverts. I think Inferno is ten times better. For woodies, it has to be any of the Blackpool woodies, especially Nash. The airtime's OK, but the corners send me to sleep on that thing. imbordisux
I apologize in advance for this post, as I know that the thread was only intended for woodies, but with three pages of posts mentioning steel, I figured I'd throw my two cents in. Now, I know everybody is gonna ask what's wrong with me, but I just don't get "Superman: Ride of Steel" at SFNE - I've ridden it several times, and it's a damn good ride, but I just don't understand all the love. I dunno, I just don't understand how it's unanimously considered the greatest coaster in all of the U.S. Call me crazy, but I much prefer "Nitro" at nearby SFGAdv; I prefer the minimalist-restraints, and, as much as I love ejector air, I much prefer the flying sensation that Nitro's floater-air provides. Somebody, somewhere, likened B&M hypers to flying-carpets, and I concur 100% - it just feels like you're soaring through the air, whisping and weaving to and fro, very naturally changing direction, and when you crest a hill, you feel as if you're levitating for a second. It's very Zen-like. Oh, and as for woodies, I don't get all the hate for "Rolling Thunder" - ok, if you don't like rough coasters, I understand, but I like my woodies to just PUMMEL me into oblivion, I *want* to feel like the entire thing could collapse at any moment, and I want to feel like the seat-belt really IS the only thing holding me in. coasterdude5
I didn't really get Tennessee Tornado... It is extremely short and yes, there are some amazing forces, all I got out of it was a headache. And I usually don't get headaches after coasters. Also, the drop seemed like it was a big drop sliced in half. You're really high, then you drop 40 ft. and then it seemed like you just drop another 40 ft. But that might have just been me. timetrial3141592
SROS is the best non-looping ride in the U.S. (IMO, an intrimmed Montu beats it for best ride), and it's mainly because of the sheer insanity. The bunny hills at the end produce major ejector airtime in any seat, and watching the train come into the brake run is truly amazing. My favorite moment in SROS is the little dip right after the overbank. It always comes as a surprise to me.
