Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (SFDK) Discussion Thread

I'm really hoping all these crazy ride relocations turn out to be false.... Moving a ride is quite expensive, and I really don't see SF relocating 4-5 coasters for practically the cost of a brand new one...

Pandamonium always has long wait times, and it's only been at the park for three three and a half years... I don't see it going anywhere seeing as not even a Eurofighter could fit in such a small area...

^Go a couple pages back, there are a lot of posts about wait times

I kind of think those "sources" are wrong, for one, that ride ALWAYS has long wait times, no matter what day you go. Second, its something the park need- a coaster that in size, is between Roar and cobra, and its a great family coaster! And the park got it, what, three years ago?! Its not like some of the other SF parks have had spinners for longer or anything .

Pandamonium actually never really has long wait times anymore, although it still is the parks newest coaster. And at SFDK, new rides are something to be appriciated. The last time more than $10 million was ever invested into the park at once was to build V2 in 2001. Well, technically it was finished in 2002, but they didn't really have a choice on that one. After that, all we got was a boring Starflyer and a small Gerstlauer coaster. Zonga is gone, if you count that as an investment. (It was too intense, and Premier Rides, along with SF, messed it up) The park should be due for a major new ride now, even if it is a Zac Spin or Eurofighter. After seeing how packed the park became after Starflyer's opening, I cannot imagine what would happen if the park opened a Zac Spin, or maybe even a REAL coaster. (I actually do love Zac Spins, though.)

So much negativity here! I've visited DK each of the past three years. There's a reason I keep coming back. The park has solid thrills even if the overall coaster count is modest, a nice selection of flats, and decent zoological exhibits. It'll never be Magic Mt or Sea World, but it ain't half bad (and for quality coasters, CGA only offers Flight Deck). My interactions with the cheerful staff have always been pleasant, and operations are reasonable for a regional park.

That Screamscape rumor is a head shaker. Pandemonium always has a line during my visits. I haven't been since the Sky Screamer opened but I'm skeptical crowd flows have changed much. Removal would not be well received - it's popular with families. I hope it stays.

Totally caught me off guard, hopefully they're wrong. Seems like NorCal keeps shafted when it comes to coasters. Although it's only 3 years old, Stealth at CGA only lasted 3 years before being relocated. Though the last couple of times I've been to SFDK, Pandemonium's line hasn't been long and barely ever ends near the covered part of the queue (note I never go on weekends in the summer). It if does end up leaving it would be interesting to note that both CGA & SFDK would only have 7 coasters each...

When I go, the line is usually in the old Zonga station almost to where the control both used to be, but thats at the peak, the line is usually very short in the beginning and end of the day.

Pandemonium used to have lots of problems, but I really don't see them as much a I used to back in 08 and 09, it doesn't seem like "maintenance nightmare" like Stealth was, even Carowinds agrees about that. I would hope that if the ride really goes, we could see something good in its place. Zac spin anyone?

It's confirmed I am going tomorrow-Thursday. Got the Dolphin Swim booked. I would assume the waits are like CGA's during the week-hardly a wait? Last time I was there on a Sunday Medusa was like a half hour wait. I am hoping it would be much less than that. What about V2, Kong & Roar,Boomerang? & How are Monsoon Falls & White Water Safari on a Thursday? I don't care for the spinning coaster. I don't know about going on the new Sky Screamer. Looks pretty booring just going around in circles in the air. Maybe if it's a walk on I'll go on it. & I sure hope Boomerang will be open!!!

I don't think negativity is giving our honest opinions of the park based on real experiences. I have no intent in visiting this park again until it can get its act together (if that ever happens.)

SFDK is still a very good park.

I find it to be a very well balanced, combining Seaworld, a Zoo, and an SF park, into one full experience.

While the capacity may be lacking on certain rides, I still find the park to be relatively efficient, especially during the holiday hours.

One bad visit to a park doesn't make the park bad. Remember how everyone hated Fuji-Q until this trip? It's like that. Just give the park another chance.

One visit? I've been to SFDK over 50 times (I've been going there since before I can remember)! I live ten minutes away! Despite that, will I be returning anytime soon? No, and that's for reasons that have already been stated. I don't visit theme parks where it's a coin toss of whether you'll have a good experience or not. SFDK has been just that.

OMG I have been going since it was Marine World Africa USA when it had the playground & prarrie dog crawl through! I miss that stuff! Hey can someone please answer I am going tomorrow-Thursday. Is Boomerang finally open??? I want to get my Boomerang credit for the year especially since Invertigo is gone. Oh & see if I can do 3 rides in a row like I did on Invertigo last year!

Is the prairie dog tunnels still there? I do remember going to MW when it was strictly animals, we went there all the time. I always loved going into the butterfly greenhouse for some reason, as humid as it was.

I'm hoping (but not counting) that Boomerang is working... somewhat satisfy my Invertigo craving. Haven't ridden a Boomerang since 2003...and it was stuck on the lift hill back in 2006 when I last went to SFDK. Maybe, I can also snag a front seat ride on V2 as I've never ridden in the front seat in the revised version, only the old version (when V2 didn't get it's neutering treatment).

From Screamscape:

Screamscape sources have confirmed that Pandemonium, a Gerstlauer Spinning Coaster, will be removed from Six Flags Discovery Kingdom this winter and sent to another Six Flags parks. It seems a good bet that the coaster may find a new home at Six Flags Mexico. Stay tuned!

I guess it is true and is headed to Mexico just like Zonga haha.

No the prarrie dog crawl through is no longer there. I don't know what is in it's place now. & I believe they no longer do the water ski show. They should just fill in the lake to add a nice Medusa sized coaster since the lake isn't being used. That playground was so much fun. I can picture some of it. Part of it had a large whale model with a slide where you landed in a pit of plastic balls to crawl through to the other side. Anyone have old pictures of the playground? There are no pictures of it online! I'm crossing my fingers Boomerang will be open tomorrow!!!

^ So you come into this thread for no other reason than to whine? Just wondering...

No... If you look back you'll see that I've made posts in this thread that weren't so "whiny". It's not like I'm the only who hasn't said not-so-nice things about the park. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that I've been to this park a few more than you have. I actually really pay attention to all three of my major home parks. I'm not saying "OMG SFDK IS TEH WRRST PLACE EVAR AND I'M GONNA POST HERE ON EVERY PAGE OF THIS THREAD SO THAT PEOPLE KNOW HOW HORIBLE IT IS!11!!" alright? Come on, I know haven't been so specific about my bad experiences and my whining might seem unjust (I can assure you it's not), but it's only just how I see the park. Also, i grew up on Disney, so I sometimes have a bit of criticism for other parks that just aren't Disney. Anyways, I just wanted to answer your question and not turn this is to a pain in the ass discussion of how good, or not good this park it.

That visit was more like a fourth chance. The previous visits were much better due to a lack of crowds. Whether you are at Fuji-Q or Epcot, you will always have more fun at a park that is less crowded than one that is more. TPR had a good day at Fuji-Q out of luck; it had nothing to do with any managment decisions (except the addition of Fastpasses) or faster crews. SFDK's operations are fine on empty days, but no one makes any effort to speed anything up when the park is more crowded. Also, a more crowded park means they should have more people picking up trash, but I wonder if they even have people for the job at all (at least when the park is open).

Parts of the park also look like a carnival. More trees as opposed to large paved areas would be nice.

I think the park has improved A LOT since the old premier days..

Sure, it could use some work here and there, but that doesn't really make a park bad, its just something they could improve on. They employees are friendly, there are less 1 train operations, the ride crews give you high-fives!

From what I recall, I've only had a couple 'meh' experiences at SFDK way back in the day...made me glad we had season passes and not paid full admission. But these were our bad calls. One of the times we went was during Fright Fest on a Saturday night. Medusa had an excessively long wait starting at the entry, using the bottom section switchbacks and finally heading up to the loading platform. Roar's line also started at the entrance and this is when the line wrapped further back as Zonga was unheard of at this time. These were probably the only two rides we really got on besides a couple smaller flat rides.

The other time we chose to go was on Memorial Day. Got there around 12:00 or so and ended up parking in the already quickly filling up overflow lot. Wait times were not as bad as the Fright Fest but getting into the park was nightmarish. Only got on a couple major rides that day as well..

Other than that, I've had pretty positive results but this was back in the days when Zonga was there, and when V2 was new. My last visit in 2006 (which was on a Saturday in the middle of summer) was pretty decent, got on all of the coasters except Boomerang...then had a bunch of ride breakdowns probably due to the 112-degree heat we were facing.

With the removal of Iron Wolf at SGAM confirmed, it only strengthens the suspicions of the other convoluted rumors about SF parks lately.

I really can't see the park's most popular coaster besides Medusa leaving after a mere three years operation, but after all these rumors, maybe so...
