Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (SFDK) Discussion Thread

Yesterday was a blast. It was nice to finally be able to put faces to names. I was also relieved that the weather held for us, and that my back didn't keep me off the coasters (most of yesterdays group knows that I messed up my back bouncing my daughter on my knee yesterday morning). I did, however, sit out Kong, because that's bad for my back even on a good day! I look forward to another meet-up in the future!

So yesterday was a great day out at SFDK, definitely one of my more solid visits and probably the most uncrowded SFDK I've ever seen! Scooterdoug, Double0Kevin, RawkinCoaster38, Robman, JeffyJosephNorcal, Cal1br3tto, my cousin and myself met up for a great time at the park. While waiting for Kevin, Jeff, Rob, and Cal1br3tto, we decided to take in the first ride on Superman...or first several rides I should say. The line was nonexistent, maybe waited 1 train load. This was my first time riding it (yay new credit!) and it blew me away! I first tried it out in the front when I noticed the "S" plate missing. This created a nice, unobstructed view and before we knew it, we were dispatched! Initial launch was mild but after passing back through the station for the second time and heading skyward, I felt the most graceful moment of airtime, ever. Passing through the barrel roll was a bit freaky but amazing at the same time. But wait...I was not expecting the drop into the non inverting loop to do much but I was airborne the entire trip down to the base of the non inverting loop. One last bit of floater air coming over the top before coming to rest. Unfortunately my 10th ride delivered an unpleasant experience in row 3...I decided to look upward during the backward launch, thus kinking my neck during that forceful section. Neck is fine now but it was sore last night.

Amazed, I had to try it in the back where the ride felt like a completely different experience, with a little more 'violent' airtime, lasting a bit longer. I noticed the positives were quite forceful too on the reverse launch, and at the bottom of the non inverting loop...so pretty much you're going from being pulled upward to slamming downward rather quickly. If not paying attention it will catch you off guard!

Off Ride POV, holiday-style

After we all met up, we hit up Roar (which felt like it was dragging along) and V2 (which felt rather...weird and tame despite the more forceful initial launch). After getting my stuff out of the lockers (ugh...well can't complain, I did get a complimentary ticket, thanks to Scooterdoug!) we headed over to Medusa plaza where I got my first star flyer credit as it was running this time. That can definitely use more height because at the top I felt like we were only half way up the tower...but nope, that was the max height. Very frigid up there. Relaxing, mellow, and cold. Next was Medusa which again felt weird and rather tame...Spoiled by Superman perhaps? After that we headed to Kong for a not so bad of a ride! Honestly I can see why people say this is the better of the standard SLC coasters. Only annoyance is the close-to-the-ears padding.

Back over to Superman for ride #7 and off to claim our goods from the other locker and check out the flats, dolphin show, and back over to Superman for 3 more rides, a night ride on Roar, and finish the night off on Medusa (4 ride marathon).

Had a great time, glad to meet 3 (well 4...Gold Porn? You know who you are ) TPR members. And of course we had to finish the night with dinner and conversation of primarily coasters.

Great TR, Angry_Gumball!

I had a blast too, it was great to reconnect with some awesome TPR buddies and meet some new ones! And all at my home park!

One of my highlights (singing on Taz): "andddd the Superman is on the Pandemonium and the Pandemonium was on the Tony Hawk and the Tony Hawk was on the Zonga pad and the Zonga pad was in the park and the park was in Vallejo... and the rain keeps falling all around all around and the rain keeps falling all around!"

Glad you all loved Superman, and that the park was so dead we got to walk on Superman almost every time and pick whichever row we wanted! 10 rides on Superman in all, most in the acclaimed BACK ROW!!! And getting to stay on Medusa consecutively because there was no one in the queue.... AWESOME.

Hope we can do it again sometime, guys!

I really can't decide which row I like better. I enjoy Row 6 because it provides unrelenting high g's throughout the whole ride, not to mention that crazy airtime after the barrel roll. However, Row 1 has one of the strongest OMFG moments on any ride for me, which is the full speed launch right into the upward spiral with one INSANE pop of airtime as you crest the top of the hill. Both rows are an amazing experience, so I count them as equal in my book.

Agreed, row 1 does happen to have that nice skyward launch. You still get air coming back down but it's a little easier on the body, comfort-wise, and you aren't slammed quite as hard into the seat.

About Superman, I forgot to mention that initially I thought the shin pads would feel very restricting, annoying, and uncomfortable but in the end they are quite soft and not that bad. I'm really wanting to ride it again! (See what our SFDK trip started?)

Unfortunately, Ive only tried the first row. I want to try row 6, bad.

I'd definitely recommend hitting up the park during the Holiday event especially if you want re-rideability. Lines were very minimal if any for S:UF. That day, the attendant at the station entrance told us to just pick an empty row (in which most cases we just got to the station as riders in the station had just boarded the train allowing us to pick any row. Other moments lucked out when they needed 4 more riders and we had exactly 4 of us left over to fill out the last 2 rows.

Be sure to take advantage of Holiday in the Park

Sage advice, both of you. I plan on taking advantage of HITP once more tomorrow. I have some time off of work right now, and my in-laws are in town, delighted to take care of the kids. So, I'm heading there once more tomorrow for what will likely be my last visit of the season. If, by chance, anyone else will be there as well, PM me and we could meet up.

Went Friday the 29th, and crowd-wise it was like we had the park all to ourselves. Everything except Roar (broken half the day, and running one train the rest) and Kong (of course only running one train) was a walk on. Was a little chilly, and half the rides were down (Roar and V2 half the day, Taz, Voodoo, Monkey Business, Boomerang, etc).

Voodoo and Boomerang and several others are closed now until the Spring. Holiday in the Park is "limited operation" so there are quite a few rides they keep closed for the duration of HiP.

I went on the 27th with my family, got to see scooterdoug and get my #50 ride on Superman!

Just a few things of note:

--Coasters were about walk-on for the first hour of operation, then got about 30-minute lines for the rest of the day. LOTS of families with little kids everywhere! The snow hill apparently had quite the long line all day!

--The dolphin show was much better than when I saw it a few weeks ago. Last time there were only 3 dolphins performing, but this time there were 7 and it made for a much more exciting show!

--WORST PART OF THE DAY: Season pass processing! I should have gotten my pass processed first thing but the lure of Superman was too great for me to resist! By the time I got around to processing my pass, the line was all the way out to the giant giraffe! It ended up taking about an hour and a half!! Later in the evening it wasn't THAT long, but still long all day!

^Thanks for sharing! Yea, this was a nice trip down memory lane, when I frequented SFDK from 1999-2003. What exactly was that virtual reality stage thing? I always saw people doing it but looked pretty strange. And the V2 castration...I don't think I got my pass until after it was changed up. I remember being completely let down at how 'hideous' it looked but was amazed at how it rode.
