just so I'm helping to give back and try to make the world a little better.

give back?

give back what? Something that you stole? Something that was given to you?

"Give back" is a real lame term. Its impossible to give back something that you were never given in the first place..

^Hmm--we were sort of "given" our rights in this country thanks to the good works of those who came before us. So, I'd say there's nothing wrong with that particular figure of speech, Joe.

Joe,

I got my start in my career through a minority non-profit organization where I interned at a major corporation during the summer while in college. I did three summers at AT&T. Since such an organization gave me an opportunty to get a start in my career, where you hardly see any minorities (at that time, black men) in any corporate or management positions, I felt like it was only proper to give my time and money to help others who may need help in their careers, not only to mentor youth during their college years but to help with anything the organization may need to support their goals. I also work with a local AIDS foundation and volunteer my time to help set up for their various charity events and fundraisers.

Does that help you now?

Also cfc, I know what you mean about being up in a gym 5-6 times a week. It's a lot of hard work to do that as well as work, volunteer, date, visit with friends, etc. I mentioned it on another thread but within about 3 months I knocked off 6 percentage points of my body fat and gotten a lot more muscular. I do see a lot of people in the gym as much as me, however it doesn't look like they're making any progress at all. I see a few staring at me trying to figure out what I'm doing in my program, but then I'm there to get some real work done and I think the results really show.

^ No offense, but seeing your only 38 I kind of doubt your statement of minorities not getting chances at management positions. That's be the 90's not the 60's.

And stop getting cfc and larry mixed up.

I like to work out too, good old 12 ounce curls, then beat up those that do me wrong.

Never said they don't get chances. I said you hardly see them. Do you work in an office? If you do, go back towards your accounting or IT departments and count how many minorities are back there. That's what I'm talking about. Most companies I worked at could have 20 people in their IT department but I would be the only minority not working the phones or doing the data entry. I would be the team leader in one of the areas in charge of modifying Sales Order Entry or accounting systems.

It's too much fun to stop! If people can mispell my name, I can mix 'em up!

Yeah I do the same with the 50lbs weights.

its not their fault you spell your name wrong!

btw the 12 ounce curl thing was a joke.. a joke I laughed at personally.. no need to go playground-style "oh yeah well I can do better than that!!"

Are you ok boo? I mean you just came out of nowhere in a bad mood... hadn't seen ya in a while!

I'm wondering if the only place you see my name is above my avatar and it's spelled 'terrancew_hod', how are you mispelling it? EDIT: My name is spelled correctly thank you. That's like saying a girl named Linda can't have her name spelled Lynda.

Won't think about it too much. It's lunch time!

it was a joke about how most people spell it without an a. Hell even google thinks I'm mistaken for spelling it with an a

You should know I read a lot of stuff, I've been particularly close to the thread since your ACLU thing. It took me a lot not to comment on THAT

Besides we're all in persistent bad moods!!

^You know that's ok. We really don't know each other that well, so I don't know when you're joking or not.

Hopefully we'll get to know each other better when we go on the midwest trip!

Fair enough?

Actually I do work in an office.

Our one IT guy is Phillipino, and whenever he's out, we typically get another minority. To be quite honest, we have quite a few minorities in managemnet positions here. Even better, most of them are female. If anything, the white male is being screwed.

I am extremely aggrivated right now at my school's secretaries...

So I had this presentation on Napoleon, right? So after I left for school, my mom was going to buy a cheese danish and run to school so I could use it for the presentation. (DON'T ASK...)

She told the secretary there to call my class and call me down so I could get it. It was in a brown bag with my name on it in marker so it was pretty obvious. So it turns out that I come home, thinking all went well, and my mom made the extra effort and got to work late for this...

The secretary NEVER MADE AN EFFORT to call, apparently. I was REALLY mad and when I go in Monday to get it, there's a chance I'll have a hissy fit over how lame that was. They've called me down for glasses and lunch, but NOOOO...decided to be lazy asses this time....

That was pretty lame. Did I say how UBER-LAME that is? I mean, you can handle the paperwork and construction for a whole new wing, but you can't handle calling a classroom? They don't like to use the PA system, apparently.

So you have one person in your IT right? That's good. But back in 1986 and from my experience that wasn't the case. I remember the first year I didn't get position because he said I was "need to join a health club" because I guess I was so painfully skinny... as he sat at his desk will his belly sticking over... which I pointed out on my way out. The next year I interviewed with someone else and got in and on my first day, in a company as large as AT&T the only minority in our department was the secretary. I did such a good job they invited me back for next year and he showed the new department, which included the guy that interviewed me the first year. The division manager introduced me to him again and I said I remember him from the first time i interviewed.

"Why didn't you get the job", the division manager said?

"He said I needed to join a health program cause i'm too skinny".

The division manager patted his belly and said "Good job Norm". And we both walked off.

And over the years, as I worked in different companies I've seen more and more diversity in the employees.

So I guess after over 20 years, things can change and the workforce can be more diverse, huh?

But I'm so glad you can share your experience today with mine from 20 years ago.

I've been in this office for 8 years in June, the same management has been in place since I've been here. I'd say more females have management positions than male, and we've got a lot of black managers as well. Hmmm, 8 years, minus 2007 equals 1999. Before that, I worked under a Ecuadorian manager for three years (1996-99), and in high school (89-96) I had two Mexican supervisors. Yep, those minorities are always getting the shaft....all the way back to the *gasp* eighties!!!!

Now I must be going, my Hummer H3 is awaiting a good scrub down, along with my model wife and her big fake boobs. Perhaps, I'll retire to my summer cottage this weekend, while the children play on their personalized jet skis. All this on the sale of black market bread. Times be good.....times be good.

I applied for a job as a PA for BET once. I didn't get it. It must have been because I'm white. Damn it's tough to be white.

Word.

Diversity in the workplace is great, but it can only go so far. One of these days it might get to the point where companies want to improve their image so much with diversity, that you look around the hallways and find that there are few white people around! If that day ever comes, it won't be fairness and equality, it will be discrimination against white people.

I haven't had a white boss in ten years and never really noticed or cared. As long as I am allowed to educate my 90% room of minority students I wouldn't care if my boss is green. Other then my close friends I have never felt the urge to post if I am giving back to anyone, I just found it is what I do. No horns are needed, no fanfare to announce it. Terrence I am glad that point made your argument seem more valid to you, I also like the fact that you need to talk about how it was 20 years ago instead of focusing on the changes that have been made. It is always great to talk to someone who thinks everything is entitled to them now, because of a wrong somewhere in the past. If you really want to help "give back" spend some of this time researching how much your local inner city school is underfunded and understaffed and see if you can make the change there. Maybe, if my inner city kids were leaving school as well educated as their counterparts we wouldn't need to worry so much about diversity and could spend more time just hiring the most qualified person.

BTW Nothing could take me away from my students and I know I am teaching kids who will make a difference, without excuses.

I hate getting stuck behind people who have never seen oneway spikes guarding the exit to a parking lot. We sat there for 5 mins while i yelled out the window to lady screaming "There are spikes right here". Everyone behind including myself just laid on the horn while she was screaming back at us and not driving. Are all people from alabama this smart.

Selfish people suck.

Welcome to reality. In one way shape or form everyone is selfish.
