P. 512: Holiday World acquires Santa's Cottages resort

If it turns out that info will be doled out over 66 days, its going to be some awesome speculation and gossip at holliwood nights next week. Raven Maven, why must you tease us so

The site looks great!

Yup!

TPR Mini-New Hotness tour starts in 66 days. Not that it has anything to do with this, just thought it was cool that it landed on the same day. (If it is 66 days away from an announcement) It should be interesting to follow along and hopefully get hints each day.

Also, at least we'll get to visit the park as we've known it, with no worries about waiting in long lines or planning differently around a new ride. And on the remote off chance it does involve modifying an existing coaster, we'll be able to ride it in a more "classic" form, kind of like how I was happy to ride Voyage's classic PTC and Raven PTC in 2010.

^ a long wait indeed. If I did the math right, July 23 is our new "can't wait until" date. But on the up-side of things, with this much effort going into the buildup and teasing, it has to be huge

Holiday World has sent us a press release about the teaser campaign for their 2015 expansion, billed as the largest in its nearly seven decade history!

Even though Holiday World’s 2014 season is only a few weeks underway, the park today begins its countdown to 2015.

“As we continue to expand our Thanksgiving section, we look for ways to tie into that theme,” says Matt Eckert, president of Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari. “Knowing the Mayflower was at sea for 66 days gave us the idea to count down the days until we announce our expansion for 2015.”

The 66-day countdown will take place on a microsite called 66DaysAtSea.com, which is part of Holiday World’s website. Each day, a new journal entry will appear, as a mother on board the Mayflower tells of her family’s voyage to the New World in the year 1620.

The journal will culminate with the park’s announcement, on the 67th day, which will take place on July 24.

“We’re mixing our park’s themes for this announcement,” says Eckert, “as it will fall on ‘Christmas Eve in July.’ Our announcement will coincide with the start of a construction phase that would undoubtedly give away any part of the secret that still existed.”

Speculation has already begun among roller coaster enthusiasts on forums such as CoasterBuzz.com and ThemeParkReview.com, with speculative tweets over the weekend from @Screamscape and @ThemePark Insider.

“I cannot confirm nor deny that this project includes a roller coaster,” says Eckert. “But I can confirm that this is by far the largest expansion project in our seven-decade history.”

The 66DaysAtSea.com microsite was created by the Louisville web design company DBS Interactive. Work on a second microsite is underway; it will appear following the July 24 announcement.

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari are now open daily. New this year is the Mayflower swinging ship ride plus Friday Night Fireworks, which will begin June 13. For more information, visit HolidayWorld.com or call 1-877-Go-Family.

Here's my biggest question: Is the addition the largest by financial investment or overall size? A single $20million coaster would blow the $13million spent on the Voyage/Thanksgiving additions out of the water, but a size addition would be even more exciting. The fact that they would spend the time and money to create two microsites for this project, definitely says something.

After reading the latest trip reports from this park it sounds like they'd be better off fixing the coasters they have so they're not running so rough than adding a new one. Hopefully this is part of any 2015 plans they have.

Voyage has already had new wood added this year. I hear it is very smooth. Legend is still rough as can be, and IMO Raven doesn't need any fixing.

Day 1

At last the day is here. After years of planning, we depart for the New World. The children can barely contain their excitement. I tell them they must be patient. And so must I.

You hear that, children? Be patient.

TPR will be in the park just three days after the announcement. Should be interesting!

I went to Holiday World last year late in the season. Voyage was running very well, as was Raven. Legend was a little rough in the back, but much better up front. I'm exited to find what their first large steel coaster will be. Paula is great with the teasers.

I accidentally woke up around midnight, and the first thing I did, while already falling back asleep, was check the 66 Days site. Let the teasing begin!

(And I do like how this works perfectly as a countdown for my next coaster trip, too!)

I rode The Voyage for the first time over the weekend. Started with a front seat ride. The thing was so awesome I literally drooled on myself. I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeves for next year.

Largest investment in the parks history. Hmmm. Hopefully it will be a coaster. They need something else in that thanksgiving section, and a big attraction like that would make up for the lose of pilgrims plu- er...Giraffica.

Given the investment size (greater than $13.5MM) and the below quote from the press release I can't imagine what else this would be other than a coaster.

"Our announcement will coincide with the start of a construction phase that would undoubtedly give away any part of the secret that still existed."

I think this quote subtly hints towards a steel coaster as well. My guess is that steel will be going up with track potentially on site. Wooden coaster bents being erected are a bit tougher to decipher a project from.

Hmmmm. July 25th.

Announcement Theme could be...

"Christmas in July"?

Looked like that, to me.

Looks like Holiday World took the most basic precaution to make sure this thing doesn't leak out. I've looked at the code of the website and I've been able to activate the Day 2/3/4, etc buttons but nothing pops up when you click on them (don't go to website thinking that the buttons work. On Google Chrome you can edit the code of the webpage to do what you want it to do but its only on your computer). Anyway, after a little bit more digging, it seems that the park is manually adding the info day by day. Oh well, I tried.

Holiday World takes care of their wooden coasters better than the vast majority of parks out there. They wouldn't have spent so long with the Timberliners if they didn't want to take care of their coasters. After going to Holiday World for ten years now, unless you're just extremely sensitive, your opinion seems misinformed to me. Besides, if they are building a steel coaster, I'd rather take their wooden coasters as they are if it means getting an amazing steel coaster.

^ It's actually July 24th.

Um... "Christmas EVE in July"?

^ That's actually what they've planned!

I'll back this up. HW does an amazing job of taking care of their wooden roller coasters. Much much better than a lot of parks, where they probably would have just trimmed the crap out of three coasters like The Raven, Legend and Voyage. I'm not going to sit here and say they're perfect or don't ride rough at times. It's given that The Voyage is going to be rough from the middle of July until the end of the season. Any traditional tracked wooden coaster with those trains and those kind forces will run that rough at that point in the season every year. The park seems to have a dedicated group of men who are working their butts off every off-season to keep the roller coasters well maintained. The park does a wonderful job at recognizing the work these me do too. Here's another question to be asked. Name another park who has two CCI's that have held up better over the years? It's not because they were designed any differently than other CCI's. It's because the park spends money to maintain them every single year.
