Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

p. 777: Winterfest starts on November 29!

Looks like KD almost finish re-painting the Anaconda coaster

Leftover paint from I-305?

Not a huge fan myself as Anaconda's are not orange and red, but then again, probably not too many of the GP would know what color an anaconda is anyway.

Maybe they are going to rename it Copperhead or Coral Snake?

i305 is tall.

^ This picture reminds me of a Bob Ross painting. I like Bob Ross, but it's easy to make fun of him.

"Today we are going to paint some roller coasters from Kings Dominion. For the sky we are going to use some titanium white and prussian blue. Let's paint a few trees in the background with some phthalo green. Now for the roller coasters we are going to use some indian yellow, sap green and alizarin crimson. These coasters look like like a lot of fun. Unfortunately I can't ride them because they will ruin my afro. This is going to be a winter scene so we are going put some snow and rocks on the ground. We are going to use some titanium white and van dyke brown. There now, that's wonderful. Let's finish this painting off by ruining it with some large happy trees in the foreground."

There are a couple other Volcano renovation photos of the station area on the park's Facebook site. One shows the old entrance ramp into the station load area has been removed and stairs have been added; with the bottom of the stairs facing the rear of the former unload area. The stairs appear to link up with the original overhead walkway passing over the track.

I had initially guessed that there would be 2 load/unload areas in the station renovation. From the pictures, it appears the original unload area will become both the load and unload area. The former load area becomes a hold/dispatch block?

I am not sure how the current renovation would help with capacity running just two trains. It might help if the park has purchased a 3rd train to run on the ride again.

Some of the photos show portions of the exterior of the mountain. You can see several areas under renovation as well; part of the park's multi-year renovation plan for Volcano.

Hmmmm .... there is quite a bit of unused space in the mountain structure. Makes me wonder if the park could use part of the structure for a future dark ride . . . a la CW's Guardian?

Okay, I know that this will make me sound like one of those stupid GP, but...... what does "TLC" stand for?

TLC - The Learning Channel

TLC - Tables, Ladders and Chairs

TLC - A 90's girl group band

TLC - Tender Loving Care

In this case I believe your looking for the one in bold. Don't worry its not a theme park term or anything. I think the new paint job looks great on the old coaster.

I would rather they rename it "Gone."

But there are some who profess to like Anaconda. More power to them.

Couldn't agree more...definitely lipstick on a pig - albeit bad lipstick.

Think of how nice a Mega-Lite would look going over the lake in it's place...and they could keep that underwater tunnel. I don't think too many people would complain about having two awesome Intamin coasters next to each other!

After seeing the new paint job on the Anaconda, I thought to myself: That's strange; why on Earth would they want to paint the Anaconda the same color scheme with it's closest neighbor the Intimidator 305?

Then I thought up the answer -

"They want to attract more people in riding the Anaconda because it'd make them think they were riding the Intimidator 305!!!"

As for the Rebel Yell and the possible plans to repaint that coaster RED, WHITE. and BLUE, plus give it an exciting lighting package - I'M ALL FOR IT! BRING IT ON AND DON'T SPARE THE HORSES!!!

As for the new designs for the Volcano station, I think I can see it how it could speed up its riders per hours, but I would like to see it in action before making up my mind.

One more item to mention - last week at JMU ( James Madison University, located in Harrisonburg, Virginia) I saw a poster on the board of their theater and dance department that announced auditions for singers, musicians, dancers, and all other talents for all their shows at Kings Dominion. The auditions were held last week and it'll be interesting to know which talent is from which college, including the return of the Clown Band.

April 5, 2014 cannot come soon enough for me.

If they're gonna keep the ride, then I think it would've been a good idea to change the color scheme back to the original one. Then you won't have 2 color schemes right next to each other, and it would fit in with the 40th anniversary theme.

Didn't Cedar Point do the exact same thing with Iron Dragon? paint it to match the colour scheme of TTD right next to it?

While TTD and ID both sport the red and orange, TTD also has white on it. Though the supports for TTD are yellowish...but they do have some orange in them. You could argue the color, but anyway, back to what I was saying, ID used to have Silver supports, but then it didn't have the orange. So the color schemes weren't exactly the same. And that goes for i305 and Anaconda. Anaconda also has the dark green.

ok, but what's your point? the color schemes are absurdly similar in both cases. all four coasters we're talking about are now primarily red and yellow. seriously what is up with Cedar Fair Ronald McDonalding all their coasters?? i don't even hate it. it's just baffling.

I'm not a "McDonald's coaster" fan, either, but I do find it oddly appealing when two nearby coasters have the same color scheme. Just adds to the mess of track effect, I guess, plus it can be funny when people get confused.

By the way, I love how KD did their 12 Days of Christmas posts on FB. I like that they announced actual improvements or additions to the park rather than just random park pictures. A great way to highlight small changes that might not otherwise open to much fanfare.

KD has posted it's list of the lineup for their shows in 2014. They have all wheel sports listed for 2014. Is that an error? Cuz I was under the impression that they only would be sticking around KD for only 1 season? But if they're gonna be here again for 2014, i'm all good with that!

First, congratulations to this thread for surpassing one thousand pages!!!

Second, I miss Yogi's cave and all the animatronics that went with it. When I arrived at the park in 1998 and went into Yogi's Cave, I was dismayed to see that they changed it into Treasure Cave and all the animatronics were gone. It was just a boring walk through. Although the last few seasons saw them re-themed Treasure Cave to pirates, it soon worn out its effectiveness. There was never another attraction like Yogi's Cave and, sadly, will never be another one like it again.

Third, I cannot wait until 4-5-14 to see the exciting changes to Kings Dominion in order to bring that park back to its former glory.

^It's too bad that cave is gone, as it provided a much-needed air-conditioned space on those hot, humid Virginia summer days.

They could just do what what SF St. Louis did and just open a random room with air conditioning. That was one of the most popular attractions of the trip a few years ago!

A perspective of how the park has changed over the years. The top view is from 1985 which a year before King Kobra was saying its goodbyes and the second season of Diamond Falls. Also, check out the entire Lake Charles!
