The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

Just to echo what the others have said we did oasis on the back of the TPR photos of allure and out of the 7 cruises the ship is by far the best I have ever been on. The only small negative is due to the size of the ships you can not do some islands.

Also great to see harmony at sea and not long till we see the slides added.

Finally a sign of construction on the Ultimate Abyss dry slides at the aft end of the Harmony of the Seas. Vertical support posts installed.

You can barely make out the port side post behind the AquaTheater balconies in this photo. The starboard post stands out well enough.

For an idea of what the slides will look like, check out this model of the Harmony of the Seas at the Seatrade Cruise Global 2016 show this month. Photo by Cruise Ship Supplies Australia.

To the much more experienced cruisers than myself, what has been your favorite excursions? we will be stopping in Labadee Haiti, Falmouth Jamaica, and Cozumel Mexico.

You're pretty limited in Labadee and even to some extent in Falmouth. For Cozumel, I'm pretty much 100% opposed to wasting precious time taking the ferry to Playa De Carmen for anything on the mainland. My wife did one of the beach break excursions a couple months ago when sailing on the Brilliance (?) from Tampa, and reported that it was good. "Three Reef Snorkel" is a commonly seen excursion at the Cozumel ports and even with the reef damage that's been sustained there, you'll see some pretty cool stuff. The one that's interested me along those lines for awhile is Isla Pasion via Twister, which is a jet boat ride to a beach club sorta situation. The town itself is the worst of mass tourism. I'd barely bother walking around.

We had a great time in those ports in 2011. In Labadee, we loved the super high zip line, and the mountain coaster! In Falmouth, we did the Dunns River Falls, it was a lot of fun, but the water is kind of sketchy. Then, we did the Jamaican bobsled mountain coaster and had a great lunch at the top of the hill. In Cozumel, we went on ATV's and had a blast. We had a great time in those ports.

Memories of our Allure of the Seas cruise a few years back.

Labadee has an awesome zip line, (expensive, but do it once for the view), and you have to do the Alpine coaster.

In Flamouth, your stuck to take an excursion to get anywhere. We did the Dunn's River Falls and Bobsled combo. The Bobsled feels like the fastest and my favorite Alpine coaster. Probably the only coaster where I have difficulty not going "Balls Out". The trees are so close to the track.

I've been to Cozumel a few times. I like the Money Bar for a day of relaxing, food and snorkel. Chankanaab Park is a good place to take the family for the day. I once drove all the way South to Punta Sur and found it had an awesome park for a beach day full of activities.

Thank you for the suggestions. I probably wont get to do an excursion at each stop as we will have a 3 year old and a 1 year old with us but I am definitely going to make sure I get out to at least one of them.

Any recommendations for the following ports:

Livorno (Florence/Pisa)

Cannes

Marseille

Barcelona

Naples

We're on the 7-day Western Mediterranean Cruise out of Civitavecchia in 7 weeks for our Honeymoon. Looking for cultural and can't miss excursions.

Thank you in advance!

It depends what you want and how much transit time you're willing to spend on trains/buses, honestly. There's big obvious stuff (Sagrada Familia, Pompeii, Monaco) with those ports, there's less obvious stuff (Cinque Terre, Siena, Amalfi Coast, Saint-Rémy). To me, you can't go wrong with any of it. If you don't care about art/architecture/urban parks & spaces/history, you could always do something else like hit summer funfairs on the Cote D'Azur?

Also, do yourself a favor and look into private tours for some of these ports. They are about the same price as the ship sponsored ones and can usually do a lot more. You can even find people on your ship roll call that want to share and then they become even cheaper. We're doing private tours for all of our Italy and Greece cruise ports this summer.

This is good advice just about anywhere, but definitely in Europe. Plus a lot of places you can just do your own thing assuming you aren't scared to use an automated ticket machine.

They have started adding the metal slide sections to the Ultimate Abyss dry slides on the Harmony of the Seas.

They'll be winding their way from deck 16 down to deck 6 over the next few days/weeks.

Meanwhile, the Perfect Storm water slides are 99.9% complete.

The world of luxury cruise ships strikes us as one of unfettered oneupmanship. Do you really need (even want) to shoot down a zip line in the middle of the ocean or sip drinks served up by a robo bartender? No, but such features sure seem compelling when you're browsing cruise line websites. Norwegian Cruise Line has raised the bar for outlandish cruise offerings yet again. Its recently announced China-bound "Joy" cruise ship will entertain with a two-level race track, multi-story water park, high-tech arcade, and bumper hovercraft arena.

Norwegian calls the Joy ship its most innovative and luxurious ship ever, and even if we were really itching to argue, it'd be hard to make a case against the stack of evidence. Exhibit A, of course, is the two-level race track.

Racing is not an entirely new concept to the cruise ship market, but usually it's handled by simulators; Norwegian says that the Joy's race track will be the first to venture out to sea. We've seen cruise ships with ice skating, simulated skydiving and other unlikely activities, so why should all that ocean get in the way of racing cars?

Cars" is definitely too strong a term in this case, as the rendering of the Joy's track clearly show we're talking go-karts. Still, racing go-karts head to head with friends, family members and fellow passengers should be a fun way to spend a sunny day out at sea. And that track would look impressive at a boardwalk amusement park, let alone riding aboard a ship.

If racing isn't your thing, the Joy will have no shortage of entertainment alternatives, and the Galaxy Pavilion promises to rival the race track in terms of intriguing offerings. The high-tech arcade will offer Oculus virtual reality experiences, dark ride simulators, an interactive race car-turned-simulator, flight simulators and bumper hovercraft. The pavilion will also include a Star Wars game and six Xbox stations.

"Joy riders" will also have access to an open-air laser tag arena and two multi-story water slides. The Double Aqua Loop free fall slide will include a loop winding off the side of the ship, while the Aqua Racer will continue the ship's racing theme, letting two guests compete on inner tubes down 360 feet (110 m) of twisting, splashy slide.

We assume some folks still go on cruises to relax - or at least need to bring their pulses down from all the wild activities. They will be able to enjoy quiet and tranquility in the Joy's top deck open park and browse offerings in the luxury retail space, which will offer everything from duty-free goods, to clothing, to electronics. There will also be three full-service casinos.

The ship will include The Haven, a private luxury complex for VIP types with 74 large suites, an enclosed courtyard with pool, an observation deck with 180-degree views, a private restaurant, personal butler service and a dedicated concierge.

Beyond those major selling points, Norwegian says there will be a mix of mini-suite, balcony, ocean-view and interior staterooms, along with the fastest bow-to-stern Wi-Fi network in its fleet. It promises an east-meets-west experience, where the western cruise vacation blends with the "comforts and preferences that Chinese guests expect."

The Joy is being built by the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany and will officially launch in Summer 2017, sailing from Beijing and Shanghai. You can see a little more about it in the short video teaser below.

I'm not sure I like the gokart track on the cruise ship!!?? Like I loved the bumper cars because they were fun and that space could be used for a ton of other activities throughout the day and night. That track is going to take up a lot of room and be ONLY for go-karts. Oh well, doesn't matter for now as I will not go on a China-Based ship.
