The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

I have ate at one a long time ago but I don't remember it.

I think RCCL is making this move because last I heard, they were hoping that the Boardwalk would be more of a nightlife hotspot than it turned out to be. I bet it will help them achieve that goal! (If this is still an issue)

My family's next cruise is on Allure but not until 2013. I can't wait!!

^ When we were on Allure, there always seemed to be plenty of people on the Boardwalk at night...especially with the night time show there. The only time it was dead is when weather was bad.

Yeah I didn't really know, I just remember hearing they made changes on Allure because it wasn't very lively on Oasis. I just spent like an hour looking at your photo tr from feb. for like the 4th time and it makes me sooo excited! I want one of those salads, churros, doughnuts, ahh! I need to get on this ship!

^Yeah one of the big changes from Oasis to Allure was replacing the doughnut shop with the hot dog place and the sea food place with Rita's. It worked exactly as they wanted!

I seriously don't know if I could ever do Oasis as they improved (and made more Elissa Friendly) so many things on Allure.

You learn a lot building the world's largest cruise ship and that pretty much meant that the second would be better. Little things like more outlets in the cabin, food choices, etc. It's another reason we decided NOT to sail on the Disney Dream, but will be doing the Disney Fantasy this Fall instead.

^Oh yeah! It's the small things that make a huge difference! Didn't they also add a Starbucks to Allure that wasn't originally on Oasis?

I can't wait to hear more details about the Project Sunshine class of ships! RCCL is just so innovative (just like Apple ) and I can only imagine what they have in store. So far all we know is the type of propulsion I want some concept art!!!

^We also know that the ships are being built by the same yard that made the Radiance Class ships and not the recent larger Explorer, Freedom, and Oasis Class ships. The Radiance class ships are favorites among cruise enthusiasts and are very nice. I am SUPER excited to see a giant version of a Radiance class ship!!!

Same here!! It was cool to see what was possible with a ship that big but you can only go so big! I can't wait to see how and what RCCL will do with the newest technology on a medium size ship (and what they will introduce that will be new to the industry, I'm sure they have something up their sleeve)

I'm a bit concerned with how crowded Project Sunshine ships will be. The PS ships are only 2% larger than the Freedom class but hold 13% more passengers. Hopefully they will make more efficient use of space.

^ In have to think it will be fine. I mean, I've been in the Freedom class during a busy time filled close to capacity and never actually felt over-crowded. RCCL seems to do a very good job of giving their ships and very open and non-claustrophobic feel.

Also, it's been a few years since the Freedom ships were made and they may have ways to save space overall. They might be able to do more with less and have a higher square foot to customer ratio than the Freedom ships. But I also agree with Robb, I've never felt crowded on the Freedom. It will be interesting to see though!

So one of the things that I love about RCCL is the large variety of random activities. I had never heard about this before - but it looks like there is a "Prohibition Party" that is featured on Allure to tie into Chicago. There are not many details about it online, but I found this blurb from a trip report - how cool does this sound!?!?!

Every fifth night in the Jazz on 4 lounge in Entertainment Place. Passengers are invited to don their favorite Jazz Age outfit and step back in time. This event is only open to passengers 21 and older and has a cover charge of $35, which includes entertainment, appetizers, alcoholic beverages.

Special Event –a “special” event limited to 50 people but he really could not talk about it, the cost would be $35 per person and then he gave an extension number to call after saying that “I probably should not have mentioned this”. We must wear the pin (provided) on our lapel and we are to tell no one the password unless asked. A crew member dressed like a gangster opens the crew door, looks at our lapel pin and asks for the password. When we reply

he lets us in and gives us $200 bucks in “old money” and a racing form. Bear in mind that there are only 50 of us in this line and it is causing

quite a stir as everyone walking by is asking “what is going on” and the crew keeps them moving along if they are not wearing a lapel pin.

We are escorted into the jazz club through the back hallways and when we enter the club we see that it has been redecorated to be

a speakeasy of days gone by… we are at a prohibition party!

There are showgirl “flappers”, gangsters, old time press photographers, a jazz band and an old time radio broadcasting horse races

(you use your $200 to bet on the races during the band breaks). You are greeted with gin “shots” presented in egg cups,

all of the Hendricks’s gin drinks are served up in coffee cups and saucers and everybody stays in character for the entire 2.5 hours.

There is an MC keeping us in line till Mr. Gold arrives. Appetizers are delivered to your couch, drinks keep flowing, the show continues and dancers keep at it until Mr. Gold arrives.

Of course there is more but that is for you to find out! You will get great pictures from this and suffice it to say that you will know when it is over (have you ever been raided?

Anthony (Jumpin’ Joe) puts on a bar flair show that you will not believe. The staff made it work by staying in character for days.

So what do you think? Is it something that you would try?

Well Robb, I know you have said that new ships are becoming more and more like floating theme parks! (And I am sure everyone on here will agree when I say that I think it's awesome!!!) Looks like NCL's newest ship will be a future TPR Cruise!

Norwegians Cruise Line's next ship to have massive water park

(8:30 AM) -- Norwegian Cruise Line is planning something wet and wild for its next ship, the Norwegian Breakaway: A massive water park area with five -- count 'em -- water slides.

The deck-top Aqua Park, to be announced today, also will feature two pools, four hot tubs and a semi-open air eatery called the Breezeway Bar & Grill.

Two of the water slides at the Aqua Park will be side by side and feature a starting area where passengers stand above a trap door that opens from underneath them, propelling them into a steep drop and loop -- the first time such side-by-side slides have appeared on a ship. Two more side-by-side slides plunge passengers down a multi-story spiral.

Norwegian today also will announce that the Norwegian Breakaway's top deck will feature a sprawling, three-story sports complex with the largest ropes course at sea, a nine-hole miniature golf course, basketball court and rock climbing wall. Among the elements of the multi-level ropes course: The Plank, a platform that extends eight feet over the side of the ship, challenging (harness wearing) passengers to "walk the plank" before completing the experience.

In adding a ropes course, Norwegian is following industry giant Carnival, which unveiled the first ropes course at sea last year on the new Carnival Magic. Take our Carnival Magic tour to see photos.

The Aqua Park and sports complex are just the latest elements to be unveiled for the 4,000-passenger Norwegian Breakaway, which is scheduled to debut in April 2013. Last month, Norwegian revealed that the ship will have a restaurant-lined boardwalk facing the ocean, to be called The Waterfront. See illustrations of what The Waterfront will look like.

The Norwegian Breakaway also will feature larger children's areas than previous Norwegian ships and new cabin designs. See illustrations of the new cabins.

Currently under construction at a shipyard in Germany, the Norwegian Breakaway was named by a USA TODAY reader last year in a contest held here at the Cruise Log. It's scheduled to debut in April 2013 and sail year-round from New York to Bermuda, the Bahamas, Florida and the Caribbean. Read more about the ship's itineraries.

More information on itineraries and pricing is available at breakaway.ncl.com.

Edit: Forgot if you guys wanted a link to the article or not, link.

I personally think this is super awesome! I am glad that someone is finally venturing into a more full blown "water park." I have always wondered why RCCL hasn't put any major slides on a ship like this. It's a smart move for NCL because kids will see it docked at a port and be like "mommy, I want to go on that ship!" And it's even a smart move for adults like us that will go on mainly because of this!

Like I said before, wish RCCL would have put a slide or two on the Oasis Class ships (although it may have looked odd.) So I really hope they will become competitive with the other major lines that are starting to do this. Maybe not something as big as this but it would be really cool to see how RCCL would make a "water park" area on Project Sunshine!

Also, even though this picture looks amazing, I would have liked to have seen a little more variety. (ex. a bowl slide like on EPIC)

I really think there are several reasons RCCL hasn't put a ton of water slides on the ship.

When we did the Carnival ship with the improved water works big slide and racing slides, no one was up there, and the water was disgusting.

The slides also have limited operation hours and require more staff.

Seeing these slides won't convince me to book this ship anytime soon. It's cool and everything, but I'd rather just go to a real water park.

Agreed. But the water park on board is nice but I think this is still a little much. I said above it is awesome and it is. But honestly, every ship i've been on with water slides have been crappy operations. If this runs smooth operations it will be without a doubt a incredible addition!

Next step is a roller coaster at sea (although given the space, structural, and noise limitations on a ship we'd be much more likely to see a Dragon Wagon than, say, a Wild Mouse or a ZacSpin)
