Disney Dood Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 I'm pretty excited for the Weezer/Oasis tour supposedly happening this spring. I'm also hoping for Radiohead or the John Butler Trio to stop nearby, but I'm not sure if I'm going to have to wait for 2010 for those.
BlackHole2005 Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 Hey Guys, I'm not sure I mentioned this band before. I got the new TV on the radio album dear science for christmas, and I would just like to say one thing, This album is one of the best albums I have heared in a long time. Go and get it, now. Also, I got Cat Power- The Greatest, which is also really brilliant. Does anybody else have these two albums? What do you think of them? Cheers, BlackHole2005
Disney Dood Posted December 27, 2008 Posted December 27, 2008 ^ Your username reminded me, I really want Weezer to release Songs From The Black Hole. I'd never ask for anything from Weezer ever again.
onewheeled999 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Bang Camaro is freakin' awesome. I just downloaded their title album on iTunes, they're unlike anything I've ever heard. Their unique quality is a choir of singers and several talented guitarists, all performing at once. I highly recommend the album.
Disney Dood Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 ^ They're playing at Showcase Live pretty soon, which is a small venue in Patriot Place at Gilette Stadium. I want to go, but I don't know anybody else who likes them.
spacemtfan Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 I discovered something that should never be discovered...but I'll show you anyway... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAJRQrSiq_s&feature=related Am I the only one who is sick to his stomach after listening to this? ---space "Not even RickRoll material" mtfan
Wes Posted December 28, 2008 Author Posted December 28, 2008 To be honest I like everything about it but her vocals. They did a good job of modernizing the backing music, I think the beat is pretty slick. Seriously if they had a better singer instead of her I'd probably be all over it.
socalMAN123 Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Lately I've really been getting into Vampire Weekend. Anybody else here enjoy them? ---Brent
chmilo24 Posted December 29, 2008 Posted December 29, 2008 My friend introduced my to As I Lay Dying, I Am Ghost, and August Burns Red, if anyone has any album recomedations from any of these artists that would be awesome. --Chris
Dailey Enterprizes Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Well... I guess there isn't a better place to post this. For my final project in TV Production at Robert Morris University, I chose to do a music video for my friends' band. From what I heard no-one has attempted a thing like this in this class, but I really didn't have any other good ideas. Some history on my friends' band. I knew them from my previous college; University of Pittsburgh - Titusville, and I always admired the instrumental talent that the 5 person group had. Their band name; Scions of Thrym, is referring to the Norse Mythos Thrym. I guess now is a good time to point out that the band's genre is metal. While I'm not a huge fan of the vocals, I can still appreciate the originality in their theme. Now on to the video. There were some circumstances that plagued the band and I from the very beginning of the day of filming, so you must forgive the unbalanced shot changes and audio levels. When the band first arrived, it was brought to my attention that the bass player that I was in contact with actually quit the band 2 weeks prior to filming. However, they did find a replacement to play rhythm guitar while the old rhythm guitarist would play bass. Unfortunately, it was then said that the new guitar player got into a wreck. He had to get his car towed to a garage 20 mins away from the college. So now with the band member's wrecked car on my conscious, I thought the day was totally ruined. Luckily the band told me that the song could be played without a second guitarist. Well then things went along smoothly.. for about 20 minutes. I didn't imagine there being anyone around to help me at this time because I wasn't scheduled in the studio for another hour, but one guy showed up from class to help out. I was really lucky he did because it turned out later that he would be the only one to show up. Usually there are 4-5 people required to run the studio during a recording(3 people on camera, 1 on audio, and another to switch between the cameras and then they help set-up the set), but amazingly the one guy (Bill) and I pulled it off. We were able to get everything set up in enough time to leave room for white-balancing and sound checks. We thought we were free of worries until the band was done with their warm-up run and the director from the office upstairs told us that everyone above the studio (there are offices and a library) can hear us and that we were disrupting them. Well fortunately I managed to buy a 10 minute window for the band to play, but it meant that we were only able to get one take on the audio. Now we were under the gun and had to get a take in. For my final project I had to produce a scene sheet (shot list) that had what exact shots that I would get with what camera on what angle. My original plan was intended to include the other guitarist and the use of 2 takes of the band, but I had no choice but to throw the plan away and shoot from the hip (hence me apologizing for the unbalanced shot changes). Like I said, it was just Bill and me who were there, but my professor decided to help out with one of the cameras; as well as bring a TH to come help too, so my professor was on camera 1, Bill on camera 2, the TH on camera 3 and me up in the booth handling the shot changes all by myself. We set the audio levels ahead of time and prayed that they would be okay. Then I hit record on the tape deck and sent the 5, 4, 3... que to the professor to signal the band. Well that day was the closest that I've ever come to crapping myself. Fortunately, we got the 1 take that we were allowed with live music and managed to get another with no music and got close-ups, etc. I give to you; Theme Park Review, my blood and sweat... Actually, I'm not that dramatic, but this was my toughest undertaking and maybe someone might appreciate the effort put into it. I can take the truth... well sort of, but I wouldn't mind having some comments on the video. Scions of Thrym - I Survive on Human Flesh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt8_bc6GLQI
onewheeled999 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 ^ I thought it actually turned out pretty good. My biggest complaints, surprisingly, are about the band. Their bassist couldn't get good enough sound, the guitar was too quiet, and the vocals, honestly, were quite a bit less than mediocre. But the editing and camera shots were pretty great, my only complaint was that it was a little bit shaky.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 ^ That shaking was done on purpose with Final Cut Pro. Yeah, I failed to explain the elaborate process of editing in my post. It was suppose to give an earthquake quality to it. Thanks for the honesty though...
Wes Posted December 30, 2008 Author Posted December 30, 2008 Um that song was terrible and that band is awful. Also, if you want comments on the video...I'd stay away from the post effects, or at use them as sparingly as possible. The earthquake effect gets really old after awhile. WTF is up with the dip to black dissolve at 1:52? I dunno, I know you were somewhat limited in your shot selection, but it gets really tedious to watch after awhile (the song doesn't help) and I just sort of scanned through it. I know when you have limited footage, it makes editing suck, but it seems like you tried to throw on to many unnecessary filters and effects to cover up the lack of coverage...but it ends up being more distracting than its worth.
coasterdude5 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Geez I've got tears in my eyes... No offense, but it sounds like that old cartoonish lion roaring sound with a bit of dying cat.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 ^^ You're right about there not being enough footage to work with. That fade-to-black was put there to hide an awful transition between the 2 shots. As for the heavy use of effects, I thought it was okay because it was a music video. Anyway, thanks for your opinions once again. I did get an A on this project still, probably mostly for the effort and guidelines that I had to follow, I'm sure.
Guest Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 Is that guitar player even playing? All I hear is bass. **After watching it again I can somewhat hear it, too bad he's so drowned out by the bass & [terrible] vocalist cause it sounds like he's the only semi-talented person in that band .
BlackHole2005 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 I think after that were all going to need to look at some proper guitar playing. A.K.A Dr. Feelgood. Cheers, BlackHole2005 P.S: Ignore the idiots talking beforehand on the vid.
bigstevet07 Posted December 30, 2008 Posted December 30, 2008 While that may be some epic guitar playing, nothing can top the guys of Sonseed. The guitar playing is so good, they only show bits of it. If they showed it the enitre video, your face would melt.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Is that guitar player even playing? Yeah, don't blame the band for the bad sound levels. That was all my fault, but I found listening with head-phones helps a little...
no_brain_er Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 Lately I've really been getting into Vampire Weekend. Anybody else here enjoy them?---Brent I love Vampire Weekend! They're very lo-fi, but something about them makes me smile. Also, Crystal Castles are muy bueno!
Wes Posted December 31, 2008 Author Posted December 31, 2008 ^ I don't think Lo-Fi means what you think it means.
BeemerBoy Posted December 31, 2008 Posted December 31, 2008 I found listening with head-phones helps a little... I found that turning the sound off helped even more. Seriously, do they actually get gigs? Besides that craptastic display of "music," it's A) nice to hear you did well on your project, and B) also nice to see you can accept criticism....it's a good trait to have.
Dailey Enterprizes Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 ^ Well people who like metal tend to gig them with other metal bands; I've heard worse and I personally like them for their instrumental sound. If you need an example; I took (crappy) video of them last year and their last song was probably their best. Scions of Thrym - Severed Fears http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7jcjNkHNN4 Like I said in my original post, the original bass player (who is in the above video) quit the band a couple of weeks before the taping of my final project. I don't regret doing the video, I would definitely do it again with these guys if I had the chance to.
Disney Dood Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 ^ That was actually pretty good until he started singing. Then I turned it off after ten seconds. How do people seriously like this stuff?
Vekoma Fan Boy Posted January 1, 2009 Posted January 1, 2009 I thought the band was okay, but I have to say for your project video, the bass should have been brought way down and the guitar way up. (and I usually think bass needs to be brought up for most songs!) The vocals I'm not totally keen on, but since they are (apparently) a Death Metal band its something that is expected.
