Disneyland Resort (DL, DLR, DCA) Discussion Thread

p. 393 - Pixar Place Hotel transformation will be completed on January 30th, 2024!

Recommended Posts

I went to the one at Disney Village in Paris.

It was quite expensive, but nevertheless very tasty. They didn't offer "value meals" - you just had to add everything up seperately, which was a little annoying.

Worked out at around €11 for a sandwich + side + drink, although in the US would probably be cheaper anyway.

It is pricey, you will not find a $5 foot long here. But all the ingredients are high quality and the flavors are spot on. Its really worth the price, its so good.

I would not call it the IN-N-Out of sandwiches. They have a ton of different types to order and may more options other then just sandwiches.

The Scharff family of Spokane, Wash., made a special trip to Disneyland recently to celebrate the birthday of 5-year-old Mason with a ride on the Matterhorn.

So they were disappointed to see the 147-foot-tall attraction covered in scaffolding and closed for repairs until June.

"We came to the park for a few specific rides, including It's a Small World and Matterhorn," said Ronald Scharff, who along with his wife, Kym, brought Mason for his first visit to the park. "Had we known it was closed we might have rescheduled our trip."

The Matterhorn Bobsled ride, one of the park's most popular and visible attractions, is down for six months for one of the longest and most extensive overhauls since it opened in 1959.

When it reopens , the ride will sport shiny new bobsled cars and a fresh coat of paint on the mountain. A permit filed with the city of Anaheim describes the work as a $1-million project including "station gates replacement, queue modifications, and themed lighting replacement."

Disney officials said they plan no significant changes to the ride itself. Although the company is known for its movie tie-ins with theme park rides, officials say there are no plans to connect the Matterhorn changes with an adventure movie that Walt Disney Studios is developing that takes place largely in the Swiss Alps.

"The Matterhorn is down for routine maintenance, which will include updating the ride vehicle fleet, painting the exterior of the mountain and rock work repair," said park spokeswoman Betsy Sanchez.

Of course, if Disney officials change their mind, few would be surprised. After many delays, the Submarine Voyage in Tomorrowland was updated in 2007 to tie it to the Disney Pixar movie hit"Finding Nemo."

And Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, which spawned four Disney films, underwent several changes as a result of those movies, including the addition of Johnny Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow, throughout the voyage.

Even without any changes, the Matterhorn ride probably needs a good tune-up, park experts say.

The aging roller coaster that runs along 2,134 feet of twisting steel tracks through a 1/100-scale mountain, ending by splashing into a pond at the end, is known for its frequent breakdowns, said David Koenig, author of "Mouse Tales: A Behind-the-Ears Look at Disneyland."

"This is the most intensively rehabilitated ride in Disneyland," he said. "It goes down for months every year."

The ride's closure is noted on the Disneyland website, but some guests at the park last week said they would have appreciated more notice. But others were more understanding.

Andy Shumacher, a construction worker from Lewiston, Idaho, said he was disappointed that the Matterhorn was closed because he brought his 5-year-old son to introduce him to the ride. But, as a construction worker, he said he understands that older attractions need to be overhauled occasionally.

"If they don't paint it and keep it clean, it won't have the same appeal," he said as he stood next to a gray wooden fence that encircles the Matterhorn. "I'm glad they do that."

The ride, Disneyland's first roller coaster, was an idea born in the mind of Walt Disney himself during a 1958 visit to the Pennine Alps in Switzerland. After staring at the peak for hours, he sent a postcard of the mountain to his park engineers with two words scrawled on the back: "Build This."

The Matterhorn became, according to Disneyland, the world's first coaster to use tubular tracks, allowing for more twists and turns than traditional flat tracks, which are mostly limited to rolling up and down hills.

The snow-dusted peak was built around the Skyway gondola ride, which carried visitors above the park and through an opening in the mountain. But the Skyway was closed in 1994 due partly to liability issues and slumping popularity. And the gap in the mountain was eventually closed.

The peak is one of the park's most prominent landmarks, visible to motorists on the nearby 5Freeway.

The new bobsled-style cars are not the first upgrades to the ride.

When the ride underwent a nine-month renovation in 1977 and 1978, workers added three abominable snowmen that appear to reach out for passengers along the ride's route.

The closures highlight the challenge theme parks face maintaining aging attractions without disrupting regular operations or upsetting guests who travel long distances only to find their favorite ride is off line.

Theme park surveys have shown that guest numbers do not drop significantly when major attractions are closed, but industry experts say park administrators must still be careful not to offend guests with such closures.

"In destination parks that are open every day of the year, they have to shut down attractions from time to time," said Dennis Speigel, an industry consultant and president of Cincinnati-based International Theme Park Services. "That's normal practice."

But to reduce the effect of a closure on a park's business, he said most theme parks try to schedule major renovation work during the slowest time of the year — often between the Christmas holiday and spring break or in the fall, after the peak summer season.

To notify guests about closures, theme parks such as Disneyland, Universal Studios Hollywood and Knott's Berry Farm post signs near their ticket booths and on their websites, listing the attractions that are under repair. Speigel said theme parks typically do not go out of their way to advertise the closures in a prominent way.

"They are not going to put a banner across their website, saying "The Matterhorn is closed."

In other renovation projects over the years, the rides have been overhauled and upgraded with added features, a Disney tradition called "plussing."

For example, when It's a Small World was closed for about a year in 2008, it reopened with a new scene that depicts the "Spirit of America," a relocated rain forest and 29 added Disney and Pixar characters. Space Mountain also underwent upgrades when it was closed for more than two years, from 2003 to 2005, for a massive overhaul.

But Disneyland officials say the Matterhorn ride will not be "plussed." The ride will remain essentially the same, except that the gates and queue area will be redesigned. In addition, the two cars that travel together up the mountain are being reconfigured. The cars that used to have two seats for up to four passengers will be roomier with three seats, one for each passenger.

Workers at the park say the ride will look new but won't change much otherwise. Said one hardhat-wearing worker during a break: "For the most part, it will be the same old Matterhor

Disney California Adventure will open the major Cars Land area in June, the Disney president announced Tuesday.

Bob Iger, the Walt Disney Co.’s president and chief executive officer, announced the opening month for the 12-acre Cars Land during a conference call with investors about quarterly earnings Tuesday. Read more about Disney’s earnings.

Up until this point, Disney would only confirm that Cars Land will open in the summer, when it will conclude the park’s $1-billion makeover project.

Last week, Al Lutz, editor of the Miceage.com Disney watchdog blog, reported that Cars Land would open June 15. But Disney officials refused to confirm a date.

Cars Land is the largest part of the five-year expansion project with three rides, a man-built mountain range, stores and restaurants that look like Radiator Springs, the fictional town in the “Cars” movies.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/02/eight-lands-to-explore-at-the-expanded-disney-california-adventure-park-this-summer/

Today marks the 11th anniversary of Disney California Adventure park, and we’ve got some exciting news to share! When the expansion of the park is complete this summer, guests will have a total of eight themed lands to explore. With the addition of two new areas — Buena Vista Street and Cars Land — and slight changes to the names of some existing areas, the total number of themed lands will increase to eight and include:

  • “a bug’s land”
  • Buena Vista Street
  • Cars Land
  • Condor Flats
  • Grizzly Peak
  • Hollywood Land
  • Pacific Wharf
  • Paradise Pier

As you already know, each of these lands will be filled with even more to do and see at Disney California Adventure park, including Mad T Party and Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop. All of these new lands and experiences will cap off a five-year expansion which has included the addition of Toy Story Mania!, Mickey’s Fun Wheel, “World of Color,” Silly Symphony Swings, The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, Goofy’s Sky School, Paradise Garden Grill and Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta.

The new themed lands will be added to guide maps when the expansion is complete this summer. In the meantime, keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog for continued updates on all the new experiences coming to Disney California Adventure park!

That map looks awesome!

Does anyone have any idea if Cars Land will be opened by early July? My family is going to southern California for the first time and we plan on going to Disneyland. I honestly hope it isnt opened yet because I can imagine huge park attendance when the land opens.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/02/making-mountains-in-cars-land-at-disney-california-adventure-park/

Some people think that mountains are formed by plate tectonics, a process that usually takes millions of years. When it came to building Ornament Valley – the mountain range that serves as the backdrop to Radiator Springs in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park – we just didn’t have that kind of time! So, we did what comes naturally to us at Disney and we hired the best rockwork artisans in the business.

Led by Zsolt Hormay, our rockwork art director, this incredible team of artisans from around the world have spent approximately two years growing, sculpting and painting our mountain. It’s been fascinating to watch it grow.

We’re getting ready to say goodbye to this talented team of folks as the mountain nears completion. Click on this video and take a look at Zsolt explaining the process and what it takes to speed up Mother Nature. I think you’ll agree that our finished product is spectacular!

http://ocresort.ocregister.com/2012/02/14/new-scene-expected-for-disneys-world-of-color/108467/

The head of Disney parks hinted that a new scene will be added to the “World of Color” show at Disney California Adventure. Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a speech that the upcoming Pixar movie, “Brave,” could be featured in “World of Color,” the nighttime water and light show at California Adventure. “You shouldn’t be surprised to see something from ‘Brave’ … in the not-too-distant future,” Staggs said at a speech at the Orange County Business Council’s dinner on Thursday. See a previous story about Staggs’ speech.

Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman, said no date has been set for an addition to “World of Color.”

“Brave” is the animated story of a courageous princess and skilled archer, named Merida, in Scotland. The movie is scheduled to be released on June 22.

Disney has added several scenes and features since “World of Color” debuted in June 2010. See pictures of “World of Color” when it debuted in 2010.

The massive fountain show was designed to be updated and changed for holidays, including New Year’s Eve, and promotions, sometimes temporarily. The show runs about 25 minutes.

So far, Disney has added segments for shows, including “Tron: Legacy,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Prep and Landing.”

http://ocresort.ocregister.com/2012/02/10/disney-parks-expansion-creates-thousand-of-jobs/108380/

The renovated Disney California Adventure will create 2,300 permanent jobs when the makeover is completed this year, the Disney parks’ head said in a speech Thursday night.

Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, gave the keynote speech to about 700 attendees of the annual Orange County Business Council dinner in Irvine.

Staggs said Walt Disney Co.’s parks are in the largest period of expansion in its history, including the $1-billion makeover of Disney California Adventure and the construction of a new resort in Shanghai. The company plans to add 10,000 jobs worldwide, including 7,000 in the United States, in 2012.

That includes the permanent jobs at California Adventure, mostly in customer-service type roles, when the final features open, including Cars Land in June. In addition, another 700 jobs are being added elsewhere at the Disneyland Resort, including for the recent makeover of the Disneyland Hotel.

During California Adventure’s renovations, about 1,700 construction jobs were needed annually.

“They obviously generate a whole lot to the economy,” Staggs said in an interview after his speech.

Staggs stressed the need to build a strong brand, saying Disney now is working on a project to help customize visitors’ travel experiences. In the future, guests will be able to book times to go on rides and reserve show times before they leave their homes.

Staggs had announced the project last year, but the company has yet to set a launch date for the guest features, often called the Next Generation Experience. Staggs has said the project will start in Walt Disney World, then expand to other parks.

“We must make sure we are unique and extremely relevant around the world,” Staggs said.

Staggs emphasized the strong role that Orange County played in the success and expansion of Disney parks, given that Disneyland was the original park when it opened in 1955. Now, Disney is building on that success with the Shanghai park.

http://ocresort.ocregister.com/2012/02/15/major-changes-underway-at-disney-park/108493/

Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on some of the biggest structures in the transformation of Disney California Adventure. Disney will finish the five-year makeover this summer. The final areas — Cars Land and Buena Vista Street — will officially open in June, Disney president Bob Iger recently announced.

Crews are completing the huge rock-work mountain that will be the backdrop of Cars Land, a 12-acre area based on the “Cars” movies. Signs are going up outside the restaurants and rides inside the boarded-up land that will look like Radiator Springs, the fictional town in the Pixar movies.

Nearby, workers are building the shops and restaurants along the new entrance corridor, called Buena Vista Street. The main building, Carthay Circle Theatre, behind construction walls, is nearly finished.

The theatre will hold a lounge and a second-floor restaurant with a menu by Executive Chef Andrew Sutton of Napa Rose, the upscale eatery inside the Grand Californian Hotel. Disney has yet to release details about the restaurant and lounge, including their names. However, some unofficial blogs have reported that the lounge could be private, much like Club 33 in Disneyland.

The Disney theatre reaches 89 feet, six inches tall, which is about three-fourths scale to the original Carthay Circle Theatre that inspired the Disney location, said Michele Himmelberg, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. That’s taller than Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle, which is 77-feet high.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2012/02/come-fly-with-minnies-fly-girls-charter-airline-at-disney-california-adventure-park/

“Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline” opens for business today at Disney California Adventure park. This tune-filled “travelogue” of song, dance and audience interaction takes place in Condor Flats, across from Soarin’ Over California, featuring songs from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s in a colorful new show sure to appeal to the young and young at heart.

Creating something to delight multiple generations was a central focus during production and a personal passion of the creative team. Senior Writer Carolyn Gardner said, “I’ve been surrounded by pilots ever since I can remember. My dad was a private pilot [and] flight instructor, my mom flew her own ‘solo’ flight, my big brother worked at our local airfield and my cousin’s an air traffic controller. I hope audiences feel their own hearts take wing when the show’s flight crew launches into the fun-filled, flight-themed songs.”

“Come Fly with Me,” originally performed by Frank Sinatra, introduces the crew – Amanda, Pat, Kate and Lee – to all their potential “passengers” (the audience). Minnie makes her grand entrance during “Straighten up and Fly Right,” a hit song by Nat King Cole. The performance also includes two medleys, incorporating a number of other musical favorites. “Destination Medley” is a fun, ‘round-the-world collection of standards such as “Brazil,” “I Love Paris” and “Lady of Spain.” The Disney “Flying Medley” is an uplifting blend of Disney tunes, including “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” and “When I See an Elephant Fly.”

Art Director Brian Sandahl’s challenge was to design a stage that doesn’t look like a stage. “When the show is not being performed, the stage fits nicely into the aged look of Condor Flats, and you’d almost not even notice it,” says Brian. “The décor for the stage looks very industrial, very much like found objects you would see in Condor Flats; however, when the show begins, a common flight sign becomes the ‘show sign,’ a steel drum magically becomes a check in counter and an old trunk becomes a prop trunk for the many props in this show.”

The music, costumes and props send this latest addition to Disney California Adventure park soaring to new heights. You’ll definitely want to “book a flight” with “Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline” on your next visit!

Be sure to check the park Entertainment Guide for show times.

ANAHEIM (CNS) Cellphone video of an apparently drunk, violent and large man getting pepper sprayed by a much-smaller Disney security guard, writhing in pain and then being squashed by guests went viral on the Internet today.

The video was shot Saturday, and apparently shows a man drunkenly slugging a park employee twice, and falling over from the momentum of his slugs. The man was later identified by Anaheim police as Glenn Horlacher, 53,

Horlacher is eventually subdued by a combination of the spray and the weight of several park patrons, who came to the aid of the security worker and sat on the Horlacher as he screamed in apparent pain.

Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn said police were called to the ``Tower of Terror'' ride at Disney's California Adventure at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

"When we arrived the suspect was being held by a few patrons and Disney security officers,'' Dunn told City News Service.

Horlacher was arrested for battery and assault, booked at the Anaheim jail and then was released on a citation later that evening, Dunn said.

"Our security cast member was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for th the injuries he sustained and then released,'' Disney p.r. director Suzi Brown told C.N.S. ``We appreciate the actions of the guests who came to his aid during this uncharacteristic incident.''

News of the incident was apparently first reported on the website laist.com , and the cellphone video was uploaded to Youtube and getting thousands of views. Events leading up to the confrontation were not posted.

In the four minute video, Horlacher is first spotted taking a roundhouse swing at a security guard wearing a straw hat. Horlacher apparently both falls and is pushed to the ground by a Disney employee dressed as a Tower of Terror bellhop, and the security employee then sprays him with a hefty shot of pepper spray.

Horlacher regains his footing, and braces himself on the ride's front gate. He belligerently addresses the guard with obscenities, and takes another wild swing at the Disney guard.

The man falls to the ground from his own momentum, and is swarmed by park guests. This prompts a second dose of pepper spray from the same guard.

"Let me up, I promise I won't do anything else,'' Horlacher shouts as his breathing becomes labored. As more security guards arrive, ride attendants and others push the surrounding crowd back.

"Look at this guy, he is covered in blood,'' one patron states, although the phone cam never shot the aftermath.

ANAHEIM, CA (PIX11)—

Horrified parents and Disneyland visitors watched as security struggled to restrain a seemingly intoxicated, brawling park-goer.

Cellphone video shows a 53-year-old man, identified as Glenn Horlacher, throwing punch after punch outside the Tower of Terror ride at the Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, California.

espite security guards spraying a steady stream of pepper spray into Horlacher's eyes and mouth, the pot-bellied brawler continues to swing.

"Do you know you're at Disneyland? There are kids here! Stop!" one woman in the background can be heard screaming. "What are you, drunk?"

Another jokes, "I think this guy's been drinking vodka."

The female bystander, who was not amused, screams at the struggling man, "Stop! There are kids here!"

At one point, security guards even give the man napkins to wipe the pepper spray from his face, but, as soon as the man can see, he once again becomes belligerent and is once again blasted with pepper spray.

The ugly Magic Kingdom incident finally comes to a close when bystanders jump the man, holding him prone until police arrived. See video below:
