Sir Clinksalot Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 ^ I like that idea. At least Tom Sawyer is somewhat "spacey" sounding. Plus it's Rush so it has to be good.
tHe Won Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 So, I've just read through 6 pages of people who've been bashing Rockin' Space Mountain with only 1 response from somebody who's actually ridden it and their comment was completely ignored. I feel that nobody here is even giving this ride a chance. And yes, I rode it yesterday and enjoyed it quite a bit. No, it's not better than the regular space mountain, but it's a completely new ride all on its own. The whole idea with the light show was really cool. And you could see the trick a bit which I think added to this whole new ride experience. So I think it deserves a chance. And if your only excuse is that you're Chili Peppers hater, then I guess don't ride Space Mountain or California Screamin' (much better with the new sound track) for the next 4 months. But I really think you'd be missing out.
Jew Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 OK, I'll bite. They both suck ass. It's painfully obvious absolutely no time went into either of these attractions. Well, ok...I take that back. The music synced good on Space Mountain, so that probably took a little bit of time. But the lighting is so amateurish it's ridiculous. LED par lights on any rail they could find, a couple of "intelligent" lights moving around, a couple of lame projectors projecting a floating stage on the ceiling, and some gobos, strobes...and you have rockin Space Mountain. It's a lighting package you except a local band at a crappy club to have! Oh, and the only neat effect from the new space mountain (the projected vortex tunnel) was turned into one of the "psychadellic" (for lack of a better term) videos you see when playing music on windows media player. LAAAAMMME. The only saving grace is that it is kind of cool to see the inside for a change. Screamin? They didn't do absolutely anything to the song except chop it up to match the pre-exisiting cues on the ride. So basically anywhere the Screamin' music would normally change, it jumped to another part of the song. I could have done that in 5 minutes on protools. LAAAME. It's also clear they didn't make any attempt to remaster the song to sound good on the ride, as it was WAY too loud for speakers positioned right next to your head.
haiderodes Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Ok since most of us have either ridden it or seen the videos, what you do differently to make Rockin' Space Mountain better? From watching the video I thought it wasn't as horrible as some of you thought it was. I actually liked the second half where the music goes crazy and there are lots of lights and stobes. To make it better, my suggestion would be to cut down on all the speaking parts. Perhaps throw in a lazer or two with a fog machine. Fog is always good with lighting. Oh and something more creative with the walls of the dome. Dancing people? eh maybe something more abstract and space related.
cfc Posted January 6, 2007 Posted January 6, 2007 Maybe they should've used the B-52's "Cosmic Thing." Or let Dave pick the music.
BeemerBoy Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Ok since most of us have either ridden it or seen the videos, what you do differently to make Rockin' Space Mountain better? Not make it "Rockin' Space Mountain." Period. Sure, I haven't actually put my butt in one of it's seats, but I've been around long enough and ridden enough rides to know what crap looks like. And that my friend, is crap. How do you make it better? Clone WDW's.
America Sings Freak Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 I hear people blabing on about how they are horrible rides with these additions, but I have ridden Rockin Space Mountain four times and I think the soundtrack could use a little help, but the effects were cool. I also liked the light show during the ride. Also everyone is saying how they don't like the fact that you can see the track, I like this part because I know a few little kids who every time they went on wanted to see the track. So I say hey Disneyland you can take off 20,000 dreams off the Year of a Million Dreams for being able to see the track and add 19,000 coaster enthusiast dreams back on to have the ride back to its original form.
Jew Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Ok since most of us have either ridden it or seen the videos, what you do differently to make Rockin' Space Mountain better? Finish it. I really don't think they added much except for the stage projections on the ceiling from the original/scrapped/unfinished lighting package for RockIt mountain that was installed when Space 2.0 first opened. I think the idea has great potential (at least as "fill in the gap because we got sh*t else going on until Nemo" attraction) if they were to go all out and make it look good. If the story is supposed to be a concert in space, make it feel like major concert. More lights, more fog, lazers, projections, etc. Like I said, it's the lighting package you expect at a crappy club. Not something you expect from lighting designers with as much talent/resources as the Imagineers. Screamin'? That's a lost cause. The song doesn't work on the ride to begin with, so the only improvement could be to actually remix/remaster the song to actually have transitions that make sense.
jackskellington101 Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Ok since most of us have either ridden it or seen the videos, what you do differently to make Rockin' Space Mountain better? Cut your losses and build Rock N' Roller Coaster. I'm sure the space is somewhere in DCA, somewhere in the Hollywood section. Knock out some defunct restaurants and use the old Millionaire space and go ahead and build Rock N' Roller Coaster Starring The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Personally, the whole Rockin' versions thing sounded like an awful idea from the get go, but I think this is Disney pulling the trigger on it and getting it out of their system. I think after this, it won't return. At least it's better than the first test during Grad Night where the music was an unsynchronized Hoobastank song.
krouvi Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Space Mountain is classics and they shouldn't changed it like that. I hate the music and the lights inside look worse tham most version of Space Mountain I tried to nuild in RCT3 ! Whats next ? changing small world into "Titanic the untold story" hosted by Celine Dion ???
cfc Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 ^Yes, I agree that turning Small World into Titanic would suck. Now, if they changed it to Night of the Living Dead, made the dolls into brain-eating zombies, and gave each rider a shotgun, that would rule! This would be much bigger than Buzz Lightyear. "It's a small world" . . . blam! blam! . . ."af . . . ter . . . a . l . . l . . . ."

I agree...this had great potential and what they delievered was not up to par with their other overlays (i.e. Haunted Mantion Holiday and IaSW Holiday). It is unfished, but I think I would still enjoy a ride on it. At least they tried... IMO, I guess its because we all expect so much out of Disney that when they do things of this caliber (low) it just doesn't come across as successful as if someone else did it. I wonder how much these overlays are costing them? It could be worse, remember the Rockin to Beat Summertime Concert Series? That was horrible. I thought it was interesting how they put up that logo on top of the "new" Space Mountain sign instead of using the Rockit Mountain logo "hidden" in the sign.

socalMAN123 Posted January 7, 2007 Posted January 7, 2007 Sure, it's not the best thing Disney has ever done. But, I don't think it is bad enough to say these things about it. Most of the people here haven't even been on it yet! I'm not trying to upset anyone, but this ride does not deserve the feedback it is getting! Brent "riding it again tonight" Shenton
onewheeled999 Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Okay, First of all, they just pretty much added a new voice, a couple projections, and a million seizure-inducing lights. Big deal. I haven't ridden it though, so I can't confirm this. It's just from the videos.
xascher Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 ... ... ... ... wtf? Walt Disney will turn in his grave...
djrappa Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Wow I didn't realise they were throwing this thing into an all day version of the ride now. I liked the original Rockit mountain concept with the ride changing after dark but this way is just crazy. Biggest problem is that lighting technology has progressed so much since the spec was done for this install that it's completely out of date now. IMO Disneyland's Space is the best of the three I've ridden (HK, WDW, DL) with it only beating HK because I like the station and stuff better. I really didn't like WDW for the fact that it doesn't have the very clever soundtrack and its so damn light in there you can see everything.
arrowfanman Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Walt Disney will turn in his grave... This is probably my least favorite "Disney-fan" comment ever. Boo to you. Anyway, I know you all like streaming better than actually downloading a file, but Mousetimes just released a 60mb version of the ride, that you can find HERE! It is much better than any other video I have seen so far...larger, and the filmer even recorded the audio seperately, so you dont get any wind resistance...sounds as if the audio was ripped from a CD. And it only better shows how much of the track you really do see. -Jahan P.S. ...if the link does not work, try going to "mousetimes.com" and clicking on the link on the front page. Guests get at least 1 download a day.
BeemerBoy Posted January 8, 2007 Posted January 8, 2007 Walt Disney will turn in his grave... Sure, if he was buried, and not cremated. And *if* he had been buried, he probably would've been rolling sometime around the point when his company decided to use the talents of that down home wholesome group Aerosmith. But yes, the amateur lighting package and cheap projections on "RSM" probably would've been frowned upon too. Scott "not that I'm really complaining though...Aerosmith rocks" B.
RCFreak Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 So I rode them both this last weekend and over all meh but I liked it. I hated the projections on the ceiling, and the "launch tunnel" and overall "concert in space" theme were weak. I did like being able to see the track however, and I did like the "crappy lights" all around. The music on Screamin' could have been synced and transitioned a lot better, but I liked it better then the barely audible music it had before.
Bush985 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 I rode tonight, i liked it. Wasn't the most amazing thing, but it was fun. I will get a chance to ride Screamin tomorrow sometime. -RD
PhishyBrewer Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 ^Yeah... sounds like your really bored while your out of school Ryan
Bush985 Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Yea, its been pretty tough. Cruise week before last, and now Don and Monica dragged me back down to DLR... Such a tough life. Hope your doing alright man. -RD
spacemtfan Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 Wow, the number of people who hate Rockin' Space Mountain is outragoues. Oh, but I bet everyone would like it if they do this at Tokyo Disneyland...
Jew Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 ^Not if it was as pointless and crappy as this one... Continue discussion here: http://www.themeparkreview.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=39509
