Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

P. 2038: Top Thrill 2 reopens on May 3rd!

Yes. It was the water bombs.

Why do I have a feeling this will become the next "Magnum is Sinking"

2012, Cedar Point puts in a new coaster. Someone on a forum asks "You know, I just remembered this, did they ever tell us about that last secret about Maverick?"

At least someone understood...

Really, you think that the rest of the ride which probably averages 2G's and 65-75mph featuring very little airtime or positive G's is that great a layout?

If I wanted to go really fast Id go ride Dragster. The only real thrill to MF is that drop and the overbank is rather nice.

What puzzles me is how people like Mf over a ride like Maverick. Maverick beats it in every single category other than height and speed. Airtime, amount of airtime, transitions, intensity, positive G's, lateral G's, list goes on. Mf's drop is good, but the rest of the ride is typical of a large ride - uneventful. Its not even a top tier ride in my eyes. I cant think of a single good moment coming back into the station other thant he bunny hill by the station but that lasts 1 second at most.

Plus, considering I could build probably 2 Mavericks with all the steel that MF gobbles up...

You summed my feelings up perfectly. Last time I went to CP (2003), I thought MF was the best coaster in the world, hands down. Of course, at that point my coaster count was around 50, and I hadn't ridden that many great coasters. My count is now 120, and I was seriously underwhelmed by MF. There are simply no forces after the drop and overbank. The only air hill that has any substance to it is the final one-the middle two deliver a mixture of floater and no airtime, while the helix and overbanks are boring and forceless. It's really just a "blah" ride that became popular/famous entirely because of its height and speed. In my own personal rankings, I would put Voyage, Goliath (SFoG and WW), Apollo's Chariot, and Maverick over MF in a heartbeat.

Maverick, on the other hand, does not have the gimmick of great height and speed, forcing it to be a great coaster to gain any sort of recognition. Instead of a tall, fast, and forceless ride, Maverick delivers insane airtime, great whippy transitions, a very cool LSM lift and launch, and two inversions with great hangtime. Tack some decent theming on top of that, and it is certainly the best coaster at CP.

Exact opposite of my feelings.

I rank Maverick above MF, but Once my coaster count hit over 150+ I thought it would be average, based on TPR and such. This season it gave good airtime, and enough forces, but not too much. (if you read my other posts you will know I prefer low force coasters) Every hill I was out of my seat, and I am a solid 200 pounds, not some little munch kin.

As far as steel in the United States, I put it only behind Maverick, S:ROS in SFNE, and DDragons Ice.

I'm heading down to Cedar Point tomorrow (well ok a 9 hours) w/ a few friends to ride Maverick. If anyone is planning on being there, I'll be with 3 other crazy people so if you see us say hi, I wont bite, I can't speak for my friends though (I'll have a black jacket on at night probably, its supposed to be cold!). Also Jon I'll be sure to say hi to you over at Maverick (load the trains fast please!).

I have a question about Maverick:

How is the capacity of this ride? I mean, with such small trains. Can this coaster deal with massive crowd's that want to ride it, or is that going to be a problem for CP? I read somewhere on this forum that when they operate six trains, five of them ar eitheer in the station or on the brake run.

The Q line is designed to be exactly 2 hours and when it's full, not many more people are going to get into the line. Most of them are probably thinking, "We'll come by again later when it's less crowded" and it rarely spills out into the midway. Even so, the line moves VERY fast, it's consistently moving. When I was in line, I was never standing still in one spot for more than 30 seconds.

Most of the time they use all of the trains, they do stack them pretty badly, though. You just sit on the brake run for a little, though, that's all. Them stacking the trains benefits the line and makes it move faster.

^ What sound do you mean? Because other than the two launches, it is extremely quiet.

After watching it a second time I guess it's not too bad. The wind was making me think the ride made a louder noise. There still is a slight rattily noise you can hear when the wind lets up though, like going through the corkscrews. I'm probably being too specific, there's no way you could hear it with people riding.

I forgot to post on here earlier, but I will be at the point on Friday with my parents. I will be wearing a green and white striped polo and will most likely be at Maverick for the one hour early entry. Whoever that guy is that is on the Maverick crew (Jon?), be sure to say hi to me if you see me, and Ill say hi to you if I see you.

Hey everyone, just got back from Cedar Point and here's my review of Maverick (be warned it is long):

Let me start my saying (and this is just my opinion) that Maverick does beat Millennium Force. Maverick feels more "complete" if thats even a good word to use. Our first ride was around noon-ish and we waited about 1 hour maybe. I got the back row (which was pure luck) with one of my friends and my other 2 friends got the row in front of us. The restraints are very comfortable but do be careful because they do tend to push down more during the ride which can make it uncomfortable on the brake run.

We slowly move out of the station, wave to my Dad who opted not to ride and then all of a sudden *WOOSH* the LIM's push us up the hill, fast, very fast. I had seen both POV videos but I still couldn't prepare myself, it was enough to spark a "WOAH HOLY CRAP" out of me. We get to the top, slow down slightly and then plunge down the first drop, which when on the ride like everyone says you can DEFINITELY tell its 95*, especially in the back. Me and my friend both had about 3-4 inches between our shoulders and the restraints while sitting in the station, but both of our shoulders hit the restraints pretty hard going down, the back is the place to sit, amazing air time (enough to evoke a OH *insert profanity of your choice* out of me) .

The turns were not bad, yes they do have lateral g's, but its not like say Corkscrew where it bangs your head from side to side. It merely pushes your head to one side, and if you keep your head back you should have no problem. The airtime hill produces some great airtime, again the back is the best place to sit.

The twisted horseshoe roll or whatever they're calling it, is 2 zero-g rolls connected by a turn, they're not corkscrews. Both are very smooth and there was no lateral movement at all.

Our first ride we slowed down a bit (maybe waited 8-10 seconds before the launch) but our second ride we barley slowed down at all (maybe 3-5 seconds in the wooden part of the tunnel). The launch is quick and smooth, but I really wished the tunnel was darker though (we all wanted to get a night ride on it for that reason but we were all dead).

Now this is where everyone is going to say I'm wrong, but coming out of the tunnel even though you do feel the trims on the hill, I did catch a good amount of airtime coming over that hill, again the back is still the best place to sit.

Coming around the turn at the bottom of the hill you are really going fast, and I am personally VERY happy they took out the heart-line roll because I couldn't even imagine going through a roll that fast. The water from the hose does get in your face but I found it more annoying on my second ride which was in the 3rd row.

The Stengel dives are one of the greatest features of the ride, all my friends loved them the best and i agree they're great. They are pretty forceful (much more then I expected) and are smooth and a lot of fun. The last little airtime hill does offer some good airtime, which I wasn't really expecting too much, nice surprise!

Overall I give Maverick a 9.8 out of 10, definitely a great addition to Cedar Point. Also one last note, for all the people who called it "Cedar Point's California Screamin" (not just you Robb, i've heard a lot of people say this), its not. The ride is far to intense to be Cedar Points version of California Screamin (yes I have been on it). Maverick is by far my new favorite ride in the park.
