Mdcastle
Maybe it becomes a question of space then. The splash pad takes up an absolutely enormous amount of space for what it is. When they redo the old area they could easily fit a decent splash pad in there. There's no way to fit a decent family play area in there, but one would fit where they're doing the splash pad now. ariznglori
The new splash pad looks like it will have cabanas by it on the park map. I think that they also wanted more space for lounge chairs. So maybe that means they're anticipating losing some lounge space in the old section when it gets redone? Edit: Now they're on the webcam. So maybe that means they're anticipating losing some lounge space in the old section when it gets redone? I'm pretty sure they put those there for parents to watch their kids... ... ariznglori
But you don't really need a cabana to watch your kids.... They put those there to make more money on rentals. There must be a demand for more.

grsupercity
^I agree, but I think they won't relocate their SLC, they will just turn it to scrap. Just my opinion, but I could be wrong. I heard that ride always has a short queue at CW, so I think CF probably knows it won't be successful at a park like ValleyFair because we have many better rides than an SLC, but with the MiA relocation it could possibly be the second most popular coaster there so it would be successful there. You honestly think VF's coaster line up is that much better?

I can tell you that they do actually fill up quite regularly, particularly during mid-to-late summer. ^I agree, but I think they won't relocate their SLC, they will just turn it to scrap. You honestly think VF's coaster line up is that much better? It is, actually.... We have a more modern corkscrew, we have a hyper, we have a decent GCI, we have an Impulse coaster, we have a classic wooden coaster, we have the same Arrow mouse, and we have Excalibur, which at least is something unique. The only thing we can't compete with them on is an SLC, which honestly isn't that great. I'm not saying guests wouldn't ride an SLC, but I do think our coaster lineup is significantly better than MIA's, and in this day and age even the GP can see the difference between a cookie-cutter SLC and Banshee. There's also other reasons a B&M would be the ideal choice 1.Capacity 2.A custom layout that doesn't require taking a large, rectangular chunk out of the parking lot. 3.I would guess the reliability is better. 4. Zero complaints from guests about a rough ride experience. Edited April 11, 2015 by dippindotsguy8
ariznglori
Our lineup is not better than Six Flags America's, and their SLC is still performing well enough after however many years. I know it's not wanted, but to play devil's advocate, an SLC would be within the realm of possibility for Valleyfair, and well within budget. Michigan's Adventure has what many call a very smooth SLC, and if they got a hyper GT-X, their line-up would be pretty much on par with Valleyfair's (they've already got more inversions than we do). Factoring in their waterpark, they might be a better park overall. Especially if they get their Planet Snoopy soon. Random question: would you trade Wild Thing for a GT-X? Why or why not? VF15
I was originally surprised hearing that they wanted to put more lounging areas in the waterpark because there are usually plenty of lounge chairs for everyone, but I guess they might need it since the waterpark will probably get a boost in attendance due to the expansion. Anyway, when they have another expansion in the future, they could probably use the area where the sandbox is now (circled below) because removing the sandbox really wouldn't be a loss for anyone. A decent sized (good quality) kids' play area or maybe a FlowRider could probably fit in that space.

Number of inversions is a terrible way to decide the quality of a park. Even with a hyper GT-X, it would be a stretch to say that it's a more complete park than VF. 2. No, I wouldn't trade it. As much as I really want a GT-X, I don't think it's a fair substitute when you consider the overall success of the park vs. giving enthusiasts airtime. A GT-X is missing something important that VF benefits from with Wild Thing: Having a 200ft+ coaster that goes 73mph, has solid capacity (when running 3 trains) and gives riders a reasonably long ride experience. There simply aren't a lot of flashy statistics you can throw at people when advertising a GT-X. Of course Wildthing isn't at the top of the game anymore, but a 200ft drop still means something to most people.
Mdcastle
Any hot weekend day the lounge chairs are all filled up There's no room for a first class family play area where the sand is, I tried dropping the one from Mount Olympus down on it and it doesn't fit there. However that tiny splash pad they're putting in seems like it could fit, if they had done that the Imax grave could be a first class family play area or a water coaster or something else. I'd rather have a Flowrider near the entrance so people walking by on the dry side of the park can see it
Snowyowl1028
Shivering Timbers destroys Renegade IMO, but we have so many more rides (Wild Thing, Steel Venom, Power Tower, Xtreme Swing, Looping Starship) there really is no question about which park is superior. VF15
Random question: would you trade Wild Thing for a GT-X? Why or why not? Frankly, no. Even though a lot of folks think Wild Thing is boring, I enjoy it. Sure, it isn't balls-to-the-walls intense, but it's still lots of fun. I love the floater air going over the second hill, and the drop is nice too. Plus, it is an iconic ride for Valleyfair, and the park would be missing something without it. Although, I will admit Wild Thing's ending is pretty lackluster because of the mid-course brakes.
ariznglori
Do you think that the general public cares more about a coaster's statistics than the experience it delivers? I know a lot of enthusiasts roll their eyes at some of the "statistics" GP will mention.

Yes... they usually don't have broad enough experience to know that a GT-X would be more intense than Wild thing. Even if they're wrong about the specifics, they know Wild thing is a bigger, faster coaster.
TjregalRC
I wish VF was open this weekend. The temp was in the 60's. WOF opens next weekend, Six Flags St. Louis open last weekend, CP and Six Great American opens May 2nd and have to wait till May 15th when VF open for the season. They can have a season pass preview weekend like some parks do. They can fence off the back half till Soak City is done. I DO NOT WANT A USED SLC INVERTED COASTER........ I WANT A BRAND NEW B&M INVERTED COASTER NAME FALCON.

I agree, I wish they would open Valleyfair for the season earlier than mid-May because the temperature averages for this time of year would likely allow for coaster operation. Factoring in the time needed for ride inspection and testing, they could probably be able to open by the last weekend in April, or at least have a passholder preview weekend (not this year because the park's new attractions don't open until Memorial Day weekeend). Also, I really don't think we have to worry about getting an SLC because it's been 15 years since Cedar Fair last bought a coaster from Vekoma (Boomerang at Worlds of Fun), and Flight Deck at Canada's Wonderland is old enough that it probably wouldn't be worth relocating. GCI Wooden
Guys, remember that Valleyfair is right next to a river, and rivers like to flood during the spring. I'm not sure what the Minnesota River's water levels are right now, but flooding could be a reason for the late opening.
ariznglori
That may be true, but it doesn't help when the river floods later in the season, like last year. A preview weekend would be fantastic, I'd like to see Valleyfair do that when they add their next coaster! Does anyone know if High Roller's trains will be getting some love to go with the retracking? I remember the seatbelts in the last row on one of the trains were faulty, and the padding was in bad shape in a few places.
dboor129
Hi everyone, I'm new to TPR and this forum but Valleyfair has always been my home park so I'm excited to be apart of this discussion. I'd be nice for VF to get a coaster that would bring the park more guests and some publicity. I mean Mamba at WOF is pretty much the same coaster as Wild Thing and Mamba got featured on Insane Coaster Wars. I was told that CF was going to put most of their funds into VF, MIA, or WOF although i'm finding that hard to believe with the rumored Dive coaster coming into CP. Sounds like the B&M invert will be our best bet for 2016. Something with the same amount of inverts like Raptor or Banshee.
valleyfairfanatic
Just drove past the park today, steel venom's trains are on the launch track, and wild thing's trains are on the transfers, and some of them were even unwrapped!
