Valleyfair (VF) Discussion Thread

HaHa! I happen to love Star Trek. Can't wait till they come up with another series or movie. As for as the clue goes, Captain Pickard says "Make It Happen"!

False.

A. It's Picard, no "k" okay?

B. It's "Make it so."

I stand corrected. Captain Picard say's "Make it so"

For a few days at the end of the 2013 season Venom was running without the hold brake. Maintenance turned it off because for an unknown reason it caused the ride to "crash" (in the computer sense of the word) and activate the emergency brakes during the start of the next cycle. I think I'm remembering that right. Venom get's struck by lightning occasionally and it always messes things up, that"s one of the reasons why it was down so much in 2012 and 2013.

Sounds like that explains what happened when I rode Steel Venom a few weeks ago. The train went up the back spike for the second time but the holding brake did not activate, and then when the train came back through the station the emergency brakes were activated and we came to a stop at the end of the launch section. It was an awkward situation, but they did give us a second ride to make up for it. If there's something they can do to help the holding brake situation this offseason, I hope they do it because I'd hate to see them go the Vertical Velocity route and forget about the brake.

This park kind of escaped my radar and I'm only 8 hours away (STL). Looks decently well rounded. Are you guys expecting anything decent within the next couple years?

Along with Dorney Park, Kings Dominion, Knotts, Worlds of Fun, and MIA, Valleyfair is due for a big coaster. Inside sources say 2016. Even with what I'm being told, is think 2017 would be a little more logical.

We were scheduled to receive a B&M invert called Falcon in 2002, but that was canceled. It was also rumored to be happening in 2003, but last minute CF pulled An intamin impulse away from MIA and gave it to VF. It was rumored to be happening in 2005 also, with markers even appearing in the current home of Dino's. Permitting issues pushed the project back and ultimately, that coaster turned into Hydra at DP. Hydra was going to be the name and theme of a GCI at Dorney in 2006. But due to the B&M, it was pushed back to 2007 and ultimately became Renegade at VF. Little poetic justice, I guess.

Little trivia for ya.

VF's General Manager confirmed that they won't be getting a Banshee-sized invert, not surprising since Cedar Fair doesn't invest that kind of money in Valleyfair, but a smaller-sized invert like Talon or Afterburn might be possible. The next few years could potentially be pretty interesting for VF .

About the Renegade POV, I kinda like the shakiness because it makes it seem more like the real thing. I like the TPR video, but I think Valleyfair's video is a better representation of the ride...

Also, Valleyfair is rumored to get a new B&M Invert for 2016 or 2017. I'm hoping for something about the size of Patriot, and I am 100% sure that it's not going to be Alpengeist or Banshee sized. Valleyfair is too small for something of that size. Hopefully next year is our year for a small invert.

Looks like they're really making progress preparing for construction. It also seems that they're doing something with the volleyball courts. I can't wait to see how everything turns out this spring .

I was out in Minneapolis for business a few weeks ago from Tuesday-Friday morning so there was no chance for me to get to this park for the first time. Missed the Halloween event by about eight hours...damn.

Oh well, maybe someday after they put in that giga or mega-lite, I will prioritize my travel schedule a bit better!

Oh, I just saw on VF's Facebook page that the holding brake will be on next year, if I'm interpreting it correctly. Someone commented

Kind of lame when no one is screaming around you, and no "jolt" at :36

And Valleyfair responded

Come back next summer for the full experience!

It seems that they are saying it'll be on next year.

Also, I can't wait for vertical construction!

Cedar Fair recently released their Q3 profits, and had a conference call that they allowed the media to listen into. Yesterday I found the notes from that meeting here, and although Valleyfair isn't directly mentioned, there are two points in there that interest me:

  • "The changes made at Knott's, mainly investing in atmosphere, refurbishments and improving the guest experience has been a home run success. Cedar Fair feels there is room to replicate this type of investment patterns at other parks to achieve the same results. I can't wait to see this!"

  • Next year the company will spend $170 million in capital expenditures, much higher than normal due to the Hotel Breakers renovation project. The hotel renovation has been the largest capital project in Cedar Fair's history. In the future, they expect to spend about $120 million a year on capital, which is up a bit from their older "9% of revenues" guidance.

My thoughts- VF's atmosphere is a bit of a mess, a number of rides and buildings need refurbishment, and the guest experience, while good, could always be polished. Hopefully we're in line for an investment like that in the future.

Extra capital expenditures? Not much is going to us this year, but if they're willing to this year, they probably will be in the future as well.

^ It is great to finally see those Mad Mouse bathrooms totally removed. Nothing wrong with the bathrooms but now the worst traffic area in the park when it is busy can now be fixed. Curious to see if they will keep that corner asphalt or change it to concrete or pavers.
