Valleyfair (VF) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm personally not a fan of Tornadoes, not just because I can't ride them because I'm never in a group, but also because I find similar rides boring (I imagine the Noahs' Ark Stingrays are similar). A mat slide would be an excellent choice. Since they're long and narrow they can't fit anywhere, but they have a high capacity and low staffing needs, and are something for people that want something that can either be done in a group or alone, and less thrilling than the trapdoor or speed slides.

Does anyone know if the premium sunbathing grass patch is popular? I have wondered for some time if that space could be used more effectively.

Not sure what you mean by "premium sunbathing grass patch". Are you talking about this area...

No, it's near the wave pool and goes right up to the wood fence. Just a flat square area of grass where they place lounge chairs and upcharge for their use (because they are more spaced apart I guess).

Or has that been done away with already and I am crazy?

They only tried charging the second half of 2013, then dropped the idea when they got no takers. This year they ripped out all the grass and put sand down for another beach volleyball court.

That's the spot, thank you!

I was wondering if it was possible to fit the tower of a slide complex there and have the slides end in the older part of the waterpark with maybe another connecting bridge/path between the two areas alongside the slides. Not much room there and just unsure what could be done besides maybe expanding the dining options in the waterpark. I understand SFGA has a bar in their waterpark, maybe that would go over well in Soak City.

Idk if they could find a spot for a swimup bar, but that would be a definite bonus!! Even a simple open air bar would certainly make them more money than a volleyball pit. It would be perfect in that space, too. Give it a beach shack theme, tables with umbrellas and chairs and some funky verandah lighting. If the waterpark is included in admission, then any additional revenue stream is worth looking at.

Does Valleyfair sell hard liquor anywhere or just watered down beer? Wasn't there some issue with their liquor license? Seems a frozen adult beverage stand is a natural fit. The random grass patch / VIP seating area / sand volleyball court isn't big enough to do a lot with. A bar with any extra area devoted to more recliners would be about as good as any. You could keep the rope fence as the "adults only" area.

I love that idea. It would really help improve the waterpark's appeal to people who would want to use it without dealing with flocks of kids around their recliners.

The park does have a bar cart in the waterpark with hard stuff. It sells to the cabanas as well.

Also, there are 10 different kinds of beer at Chickies and Petes, and they have a variety of imported beers at Sidewinder Burrito. Then there's the standard stuff on tap in a couple other locations.

With Cedar Fair calling the investments in atmosphere at Knotts Berry Farm a success and hinting at applying that concept to other parks, is it likely we may see more attention given to theming at Valleyfair?

There's the entrance area, the area that is vaguely 50s Americana, Route 76, the Western area to the back, and Planet Snoopy right now. What improvements might we see in these areas, if any?

Are there any themes from other Cedar Fair parks you'd like to see implemented here? Or is Valleyfair sitting pretty good with current theming?

I think Valleyfair does an average job in the theming department, at least by Cedar Fair standards. The park entrance, Route 76, Planet Snoopy, and the Western-style buildings near Renegade are all decent themed area. Nothing about the theming really stands out, but it does help Valleyfair keep the charm it has. Even though theming isn't what brings me to parks, it's usually a nice addition. As for future theming, whenever we get a new coaster, it would be neat if it had some themed surroundings (in a similar manner to Banshee at Kings Island). I agree with the suggestions in the past that a Minnesota winter related name like Blizzard would be a good idea. Maybe they should make a flooding-themed coaster since that happens to VF all the the time . Just kidding, but as long as it's a great ride, I don't really care what it's themed to, or if it has any theming at all.

Maybe I haven't been looking in the right places for alcohol. It seems most of the stands that sell it were cheap mass market beer.

After ripping all the old turn of the century style lights out and replacing them with boring generic parking lot style lights, I'm glad they're starting to bring back some different styles, like in Camp Snoopy, Route 76, and the front entrance.

I'd like to see more funky neon lights and color in the area from Extreme Swing to the amphitheater. I know real neon is prohibitively expensive, but I am pretty sure that there are efficient alternatives that can give the same look.

In the area back by Excalibur, I'd love to see some Norse mythology theming, to pull in the Vikings and Scandinavian roots of Minnesota. Like you'd go through the tunnel and come up in a completely different world (on a Valleyfair budget of course). There's gotta be some potential fun ride names in Norse mythology that aren't copyrighted by Marvel.

^ That stick looks like a water pipe to me so my guess is that will be the main line supplying water to the splash pad. Then again, I am no expert so it could be anything. Looking at the live construction cam today they are digging up even more land and don't seem to be delayed by the weather so far so that is a good sign.

They have fake neon now that's basically plastic tubing lit with LEDs. I don't like it because it's obviously not evenly lit, and not available in the classic red-orange color of clear neon-filled tubing.

But real neon is expensive. It cost me a couple of hundred dollars the last time I had some neon tubing bent.

That would be extremely small main pipeline for a splash station, it would be like powering it with a water hose.

Not really if that truly is a pipe, it all depends on the pump behind it. An attack fire hose (the one from the truck used to put out a fire and not the one from the hydrant to the truck) run only between 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter. Splice that pipe off into 6-8 different directions from the main pipe and with the right pump behind it and that could be enough pressure for a simple splash pad.
