The Six Flags Magic Mountain (SFMM) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

At SFMM, we sometimes have to take sacrifices with having the very first of a kind. It's either that, or the best of a kind.

Revolution, first

Ninja, fastest

Riddlers Revenge, longest, highest, fastest

Superman, only

Deja Vu, first

X (2), first

Goliath, first (from the contractor)

Roaring Rapids, first with wide river

Colossus, longest (when opened, I THINK!)

SFMM is very proud about either having the first, or the best.

I guess what I'm trying to say, is that while the extra helix is nice, Goliath had to be built in order to necessitate Titan. Those are my thoughts

Chris.

No love for Viper? Which was the longest, tallest with most loops coaster and also (I think to this day) holds the record for tallest loop

Also other records at SFMM were a little more impressive

Colossus was not only the longest and tallest wooden coaster, but also the first one that had two drops exceeding 100 feet

Revolution was the first successfull modern coaster that had a loop(prior attempts of a loop in the 1920's got you a visit with the emergancy room when you were lucky) It was also the longest coaster when it opend

Ninja was the first inverted/fastest coaster on the westcoast

Ridler is to this day the longest, tallest, with the most inversion stand up

coaster in the world

Goliath was the first new coaster that opend in the new millenium and also the tallest with the longest drop(granted, they only had that record until MF opend, but was a huge marketing tool around that time)

Its late, couldn't remember everything. But, you are still pushing the point that I was trying to make. While some rides at SFMM have been improved upon at other parks, at one time or another, most of the coasters at the park were really great in their prime.

After riding Titan, it kinda makes me feel like we got cheated with Goliath. That extra helix makes a world of difference!

I would agree about the extra helix. I was really surprised that the extra helix added so much to the ride. I think more then anything it was the additional length that was nice. Still however I've always really like Goliath.

I really like Goliath's first drop. Always felt really "long" to me. Most of the other hypers I've ridden have more curvature in their drops that doesn't give the sustained dropping feeling that both Goliath and Titan give.

And that loooong airtime hill is awesome - to me it has some of the best floater air on any coaster. Think how awesome these coasters would be with 2 or 3 more hills.

^And that has always been my problem on Goliath. Don't get me wrong, I have always really liked the coaster, however at the same time I've always felt that there is potential there for an even better ride. Another decent air time hill would have been great, and would have given the coaster much better balance, it's just a bit short on air for a hyper. With that said I don't think many people would knock the positive G's on Goliath.

No matter how you shake it, still a solid hyper.

Colossus was not only the longest and tallest wooden coaster,

Colossus was tied with CP's Gemini as the tallest, fastest coaster in the world when it first opened. I'm not sure about longest though.

Ninja was the first inverted/fastest coaster on the westcoast

I wouldn't consider Ninja to be an inverted coaster, but it IS the only suspended coaster on the west coast, I think...

S:TE is technically the world's first strata-coaster as well as the first roller coaster to top 400 feet and surpass the 100 mph speed barrier. It pretty much kept the record until 2003 when TTD was built.

I know. I always remember being envious of Raging Bull and wishing they would have taken a similar approach with the Giovanola layouts.

BUT - as said, Goliath has one of my favorite drops AND airtime hills. Totally a solid ride.

Maybe they will add another helix and and on-board audio system for it in 2010.

Are you sure about Gemini?

Gemini

Height125' 4"

Length 3935'

Drop 118'

Speed60 mph

Colossus

Height 125'

Length 4325'

Drop 115'

Speed 62 mph

So technically Gemini was actually the tallest coaster in the world and had the longest drop, while Colossus was the longest and fastest coaster in the world. Colossus was the tallest, fastest wood coaster in the world, while Gemini was the tallest, fastest steel coaster in the world when they both opened in 1978.

What I always wished for Goliath is a less gripping mid-corse brake, and then 2 hills in each direction (with a highly banked turn between them) before the final helix.

It's almost like SFMM is allergic to any kind of prolonged airtime. To this day there is no ride in the park that has it.

...Except for the only hill on Goliath. Which DOES have some nice long floater air.

Oh - I almost forgot. Riddler's Revenge has a sweet pop o' air after the mid-course brakes. Awesome stand-up airtime.

And can we count Viper's corkscrews as airtime?

Don't forget the hill coming up to the the MCBR. You could also say X2 has some air-time on the first Raven Turn, but I agree that besides Goliath's 3rd hill, there really isn't any "real" air-time at SFMM. There is some, but compared to what people outside of California have ridden, it wouldn't even count. I hate being an air-time n00b

Oh and FitchCoaster, I was there, and I rode Goliath 3 times, but the times were about 3-4ish and right before closing (a little before 8). Definately not 6:30, I was too busy getting completely soaked on the Rapids then.

Thanks Robb. Can't wait to see the video. I would have been on here all day but i was At Hurricane Harbor.

Any ways you were right you can not see the ride from that park. But i Got pllenty of offride footage of other rides!

All in all, thank you Robb for your updates, they really help.

And of my appreciation here's a unusual offride footage of Goliath at a Wierd angle. I guess.

I have a noob question about the park too. I am from northern California and am going to visit the park this coming Wednesday. What kind of traffic should I expect at the park? Is it changing day to day or should I be thinking about supplementing my ticket with a gold flash pass?

thanks

^ I haven't been out to SFMM during the week for awhile, but until school lets out, I'd say that the park shouldn't be too crowded on a Wednesday.

You can probably decide whether to get the Q-Bot after you arrive and check out the crowd.

On the subject of Q-Bots...

I am planning on renting one online for my visit on the 25th of May (memorial day) and when I go to select the day, there is a menu asking for waht time I want to reserve it and the only time available is 11:00 AM. Can anyone explain what this means exactly? Can I not get the Q-Bot until 11?

I also have a question. I want to buy my ticket online, and since I am visiting this week, before Saturday, I want to use the $24.99 deal. When I click on it, it doesn't give me the option to buy my ticket for that price. Instead, it gives me the $29.99 deal that I can use any day in 2009. Why won't it give the $24.99 deal when it's still advertised on the website and it's not even the 22nd yet?

In the spirit of questions. I renewed the Xtreme Flash Pass yesterday, and went through the FP training video. What is the percentage discount for XFP for the Flash Pass, and does it apply to only 1 per person per unit? I actually got 2 different answers at the park from employees.

I bought it for myself, the rate was $19, reduced from regular price of $34. So like 56% off, which is an unusual percentage. Just wondering is that percentage applies to parties of 2 or more. Thanks.

And it did work wonders. Started using it at approx. 11:30, by 1pm, knocked off Deja, Tatsu, Superman, Goliath, Collosuss. Extremely effective on Deja Vu, Superman and Collosuss. Tatsu you merge a wee bit early in the line imo, but then again, only 1 side was running. I'll be interested to experience it when both sides are going. Goliath, they didn't scan the unit, and you just kind of join the herd on the upper level.

I noticed the times come up real quick, 20 minutes apart, and this was the regular FP. I did not opt for the X2 upgrade, only because I theorized that I didn't want to block out hours waiting for X2 to be available. But if the reservation comes up that quickly, then that might be worth it next time.
