P. 2239: Superman: Escape from Krypton permanently closed

Recommended Posts

The park was REALLY empty today, like station-wait for X2 empty. Too bad there were so many technical difficulties. Apocalypse was down all day, and many others went down at points as well, including Full Throttle. As I was waiting in line, a train misfired and went backwards back down the loop. They fixed this quickly but the first test didn't clear the loop either. After 15 min it was back open and we were about 3rd to getting on when one of the trains got stuck in the final brakes. The ride system wouldn't release it to return to the station, even after the other train was launched. This was an easy fix by maintenance.

Then I got on.

We cleared the loop just fine but then when we got into the tunnel the brakes didn't fire soon enough so we stopped about 20 feet further up in the tunnel than we were supposed to. Because of this the backwards launch didn't work so we just sat there in the tunnel with no employees and we were just talking for 8-10 minutes. (And we didn't hear any announcements or anything through the speakers). After 8-10 min, with no warning whatsoever the train just launched backwards and scared the crap out of me and everybody else on the train. We barely made it out of the tunnel before we went back in and got stopped in the brakes again. This time we were 30 feet too far back in the tunnel than where we should've been. After 2 minutes or so we scooted forward like 10 feet slowly and then stopped again. Then we heard the whole system powering up and down as it would go to utter silence like 3 times. After that we finally scooted slowly forward the remaining 20 feet into the correct launch position. After a minute or so we launched backwards again, this time correctly and cleared the top of the loop! Yay!!!!

BUT THAT'S NOT IT...

After we clear the loop we are sitting in the final brakes and the other train is sitting empty in the station. It is launched and it misfires in the loop and rolls back. Our train had already been advancing toward the station, so they had to apply the emergency brake just before the station. Then, they fixed the rollback and launched the other train again and it made it. Then our train advanced in the station and stopped halfway in. At this point, maintenance literally came up to the train and literally manually PUSHED our train into the correct position! Then, the lapbars wouldn't unlock! So they just decided to unlock us manually and get us out. So after a 20+minute ride on Full throttle, we got no compensation!

It was a pretty cool experience, but that backwards launch scared the crap out of me!

The ride was down for the next two hours or so after that. And then as I walked by it when I was leaving, it was back open but only running one train. The other train (presumably ours) was in the transfer.

That was cool!

Actually, what if the "one of each" supporters made a petition to keep one side? Compromise, everybody's happy.

To be honest, the whole idea about a "classic" side and a more intense Iron Horse side of Colossus doesn't make much sense. Not only would it look strange, the Iron Horse side would be much more popular since the target audience of SFMM cares more about intensity than nostalgia.

I agree 100% that a 'classic' side and a 'new' side sounds dumb, but I wouldn't say that the SFMM crowd likes intensity. I mean, even here on TPR people are total babies when it comes to GL.

Well, Iron Horse Colossus is not going to be a torture device like Green Lantern and I think it's pretty obvious that the Magic Mountain clientele wants fast, intense, loopty-loop coasters.

If they really want intensity, then GL shouldn't have been neutered. Babies? The ride would be smoother if it rotated into the points of sudden force rather than continuously stayed upright due to balancing...

You should know that Green Lantern is a horrible example to try to disprove my statement. If SFMM clientele did not like intensity, X2 would not be the one of the most popular rides in the park.

Catched this weekend a re-run of National Lampoon Summer Vacation on TV - always great to see parks in the past. As you well know featured Colossos, Revolution with lap bars only and some long gone flats. *Sigh* for Revolution without horrible OTSRs...

Saw it not too long ago - rented it along with Fifty First Dates to see the SFDK walruses starring in a movie.

Anyways... Restore Revolution 2016! It could be a great ride with new trains and less trims (and maybe some reprofiling of the first half to keep it from crawling along the first few hills.) Do you think SFMM could advertise this?

^^ If they're indeed using the current Colossus structure and not starting till at least mid Aug I can't see it opening till 2016 (unless RMC has some serious things up their sleeves to help with a massive project like that). With that being said in 2015 if they just restored Revolution with new trains/brakes and tidied up the park I would be ecstatic (as I think a majority of people would be as well). They could easily market this as IMO it would almost make Revolution a new ride. Heck if you want to draw people in (if they indeed need something brand new) if they have a budget do that plus add a Euro Fighter or God forbid add a flat like a Giant Frisbee.

I now live in Vegas but if they announced for 2015/2016 all they were doing was restoring Revolution I would be out there in a heartbeat.

Don't get me wrong if they can get the new Iron Colossus done in 2015, than if 2016 they just restored Revolution I'd be ecstatic for both years as well. Heck if they have the budget for both years do Iron Colossus and Revolution in 2015 and make everyone happy!

On the one hand it would be fun a little swifter with some nice air - On the other hand it would be a different coaster, as far as I know it was calculated "on the paper" without the use of computers and thats why it also nearly stops before the loop. Hopefully SFMM takes a good long look at SooperDooperLooper at Hershey...

Iron Rattler was announced in August 2012 and opened early 2013. Medusa had a similar timeline. Why do you think Colossus would take longer?

Wow thats pretty bad. The park definitely should have at least given you guys exit passes, SFDK always hands out exit passes when you get stuck and have to be manually released like that.

IF they are building a much longer ride, it could take longer. Also...because...Magic Mountain...

Yes please!

Nooooo! The pacing of the original ride was perfect; you get a build up to the loop and increasing intensity (with laterals) throughout the ride. The pacing is like a work of art! By the last helix it's bonkers. Anton knew what he was doing.

Do you think SFMM could advertise this?

Of course they could. They could sell shirts like hot cakes.

I'm basing it off the length given they're keeping both tracks. Texas giant took a year and a half and granted it was their first one it's still a lot longer in length than iron rattler and steel medusa. I hope they can do it for 2015 and maybe now they've done so much even being the longest one (if they indeed keep the length) they can now do it in a short amount of time.

Aw man, that really sucks. I love Ninja so much, I really don't want the park to have any reason to want it removed...

I was just going to say if the park wanted an excuse to remove Ninja here it is...

Not exactly sure how a tree was in the ride envelope. Unless it was an unfortunate circumstance where a tree had fallen or shifted.

Im guessing a tree shifted, otherwise wouldn't this have happened when it first opened (in the morning)? SInce all cycles before this had no issues?
