EuroTre Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I have noticed recently that many good coasters such as Gwazi, Boss, Iron Wolf, and Deja Vu, get trashed and smashed by some people who got a couple of bad rides and then say the ride was horrible. I rode Gwazi and it is my #4 woodie , but then I hear about people saying it's bad. Come on. Python is bad, not Gwazi! Are there any coasters you think are underated or bashed for some reason? Please post your opinions!
kingdanny Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 GASM at SFOG. It's smooth and full of airtime. I don't know wy people say it's rough.
Erik Johnson Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Just like movies, everyone has opinions about what coasters they like or do not like. Opinions are just like, ummm noses, everyone has one. I also find riding Gwazi to be somewhat fun, but I also ride The Python as well.
Jumboshrmp Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I would actually have to say I had no problems with Python. People said it was going to be rough, and it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone told me. But nobody warned me about Gwazi. I honestly have to say, that if Gwazi was my first woodie, I would probably have no incentive to ever ride a woodie again. I've recently started to wonder what the point is with woodies anyway. And yes, Gwazi is my least afvorite ride of all time, and the only ride that I could ever honestly declare hatred for. Not too many rides that I think are underrated, except space mountain (the WDW one), which never seems to get old.
verticalzero Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 What do you want/ look for in a Coaster..? Smooth, fast,Airtime, Vekoma Roughness = Steel Airtime, fast,Looks wonderful, maybe rough = Wood If I had a choice between a 200ft Steel and a 125ft Twister / Out n Back Woodie, the woodie will "win" everytime. Most people prefer a smooth ride and Wood can-not produce it. Yet Wood coasters need some TLC through their years, as they get older they need to have more maintance, if the park does not do this the coaster will become rough. I like Woodies as: You can feel everything which the ride throws at you You bounce down the drops Get slammed into corners Feel more secure even at great heights I hope there will be many more Wood coasters build over the years for everyone to enjoy. Someone build one at a Park near where I live, not 4 hours drive please. I may move house near Walibi World in a few years time, so I can get my fix on "Robin Hood" most weekends.

I honestly think woodies are kinda ugly. I like feeling insecure at heights, it makes it more exciting. Plus, i love inversions. So steel for me, no question. I never said that wooden coasters aren't fun, but Gwazi isn't. I don't like the twisters though. Out and backs sometimes, but only if it doesnt hurt to ride.
IwantRevenge Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 GASM at SFgadv sure I think it's rough too, but it's multi-looper and i love multi-loopers. But people will never go on it becuase it rough. But then i see then going in line for Superman with is a absolutly crap ride! It's sad to see a coaster abandoned because it too rough.
tinflowers Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 I found Gwazi to be amazing. It wasn't my first woodie(that goes to Screaming Eagle at SF St Louis, then Cheetah at Wild Adventures). It just felt so out of control. Thats how woodie's should be in my opinion. Then just a few weeks ago I got to ride the Georgia Cyclone and it was even crazier than Gwazi. And by that, I mean insane airtime. But, as you can see, my 'woodie action' is limited. *snicker

Please post your opinions! Like Erik said, it's because people have opinions, and that's a good thing! No one's opinion is "wrong", although you might agree with someone, you at least should try to understand and respect their opinion. For example, I could not imagine how someone could walk away from Balder and not call it their #1 overall coaster. For me it exceeds everything I look for in a ride. But others were just like "meh...whatever." And that's hard for me to understand, but I have to respect it. Now keep in mind, this thread isn't about stating opinions on rides, it's about wondering why people have opinions. So please try to keep it on topic! --Robb
jamesdillaman Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 A lot of things can impact how a person rates a ride: The time of day they ride, the seat they choose, whether it's a full train or fairly empty, temperature and weather, humidity, whether or not certain trims are turned on... There are many factors. Julia and I rode the Kentucky Rumbler back in March, and we thought it was great, even had some ejector air in the front seat, but by May and June when we got back to it, it was all floater air. I have no idea why, and it goes against what I thought about weather/breaking in rules for coasters, but it just goes to show that rides can change as well as people. -James Dillaman
shesaidboom Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Everyone looks for something different in a coaster. It's just like pretty much everything else in life..everyone likes some things and dislike others. If everyone had the exact same taste I can't imagine we'd have the same variety of coasters we do right now. So really, it's not a bad thing. If you like those coasters that's great, but it doesn't mean everyone else has to. There's no point in trying to change people's opinions to match yours, who knows, maybe when you've been to more parks your opinions will change too. I used to dislike woodies, now my top ten has more woodies than steel.
noyzz Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 GASM at SFOG. It's smooth and full of airtime. I don't know wy people say it's rough. it's a little rough, but not as bad as some other woodies...so yes I will agree with you:)
dougstanton Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 ^ 2nd row of any car and it is really smooth. Definitely not one of my favorites though.
FlyingScooter Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 People say the Villian at GL is rough, which i disagree with. But on the other hand, I'm comparing it to GL's Serial Thriller which is a headbanger.
BiCoastal Kid Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Eh, to me, I think people are too whiny. Honestly, rides that other people call rough I think aren't that bad. A lot of people think GACyclone is really rough, when it isnt, it's violent but in a really good way. I'd heard plenty of complaints about SLCS, and while they arent the smoothest, I still think they're fun. Ive never found Revolution to be painful, or Viper, Ninja, or Psyclone. The only two coasters that come to mind that I definitely agree with being rough would be Ninja @ SFoG and Twisted Twins @ SFKK.
ECZenith Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 ^ I agree with the Villain comment. I also happen to LOVE the trains on that ride and I didn't find the ride to be noticeably rough. It's like me... I notice a lot of B&Ms get bashed but I haven't ridden a bad one yet. It's just that people have set guidelines for what makes a great ride and when they're not met, the person's just not going to like the coaster as much as someone with different standards, it's as easy as that.
vjgx Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Well, everyone has their own opinion. I hear a bunch of people going on about how great GhostRider is. I rode it for the first time the other day, and I can see where they're getting the positive review material, but for me it was just too rough to continually be much fun. I mean, I like the whole rough/out-of-control feeling of most wooden coasters, but not if it's so rough that it hurts! Oh well...
easytoremember Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 Personally, I like getting tossed around on a woodie. For that reason I like the Georgia Cyclone, because it has a good, rough feeling to it and it has massive air time. Most people do not like it because it is "too rough".
Carnage Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 For example, I could not imagine how someone could walk away from Balder and not call it their #1 overall coaster. For me it exceeds everything I look for in a ride. But others were just like "meh...whatever." And that's hard for me to understand, but I have to respect it. I loved Balder, however I still put it behind Thunderhead and Hades. I think personally I prefer speed and laterals over airtime, which is probably why I rank it #3. Probably also the reason why I love Millenium Force, but many others just find it meh. There's so many different aspects to roller coasters that will affect everyone differently. So everyone is going to have drastically different opinions on rides. Or even what kind of pain threshold can have a big impact. I know on the UK trip alot of people hated Ultimate for it being so rough. But I actually really liked it. I found it rough, but rough in a good way. I kind of like painful rides for some reason.
SLUSHIE Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 I think if people say Gwazi is rough, they haven't ridden many wooden coasters... or maybe I've only ridden rough ones... IDK. I wouldn't say Gwazi is smooth, but it's no SoB or Grizzly. I would say Gwazi's roughness is just above average.
Jumboshrmp Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 I think if people say Gwazi is rough, they haven't ridden many wooden coasters... or maybe I've only ridden rough ones... IDK. I wouldn't say Gwazi is smooth, but it's no SoB or Grizzly. I would say Gwazi's roughness is just above average. I was comparing it to the Dania Beach Hurricane and all of the B&Ms I have been on Yes, I agree that there are many aspects of coasters that some people like and others dont. Heres what i like, and what i dont like. Likes (In order): Airtime, Inversions, ,Smoothness, Speed. Dislikes (Also in order) Roughness, twister woodies (generally rougher and less airtime then out n backs), inversions with lateral G's. I enjoy feeling out of control, and I like flying up out of my seat, but I dont like bumping around in it. (The dania Beach Hurricane has no headrest, and one time I somehow tilted my head back, and I couldn't pull it back up for a few seconds! It freaked me out. Also, one time I had my hands up, and the Gforce at the bottom of the first drop made me bump my elbow on the side of the train. That hurt like hell!)
Darien Laker Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 Size can be a factor. I've noticed shorter people get banged around more on Arrow Loopers, while for tall people, it's more of an issue with shoulder's fitting in the restraints.
Carnage Posted June 29, 2006 Posted June 29, 2006 ^ Not too mention being tall sucks when riding wooden Gerstlauer trains. My knees always press against the frame of those cars making the rides really painful.
