Weird roller coasters.
Movieguy replied to Rct3man777's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Bobbejaanland's Revolution is still the most bizarre coaster I've ever laid eyes on http://www.rcdb.com/ig917.htm -
The Incredible Hulk: 8/10 This is by far superior to the 2003 Hulk, despite awkward acting moments here and there. It really helped to have the big guy actually fight a super villain in this movie. Iron Man: 9/10 It could have used a little more action, but overall, I was very impressed. Robert Downey brought Tony Stark out of the comic pages, and turned him into a human being. Very well done.

Well, it's all set. From July 21 through the 24th, I will be heading to Central PA, mainly to visit Knoebel's for the first time. I made reservations at the Hampton Inn in nearby Danville, and since I've never been to this area, I'll be driving down with the help of my new GPS... I'll also bring a map, just in case. So, I'm wondering how I should visit this park, if I should spring for a ride all day pass at all, what rides I should hit early, what food I should go for, if the water park is worth my time, etc. I'd appreciate any advice from anyone who knows this park well. Thanks

Most Overrated coaster?
Movieguy replied to BlackWidow's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Geez...you hardcore coaster folks have gotten so picky, picky, picky about your riding experiences it seems. All this fuss about air-time With my budget, I'm happy to ride any coasters at all in the summer (Except Predator at DL...that thing could break bones) I loved MF, but then again the last time I rode it was in 2002, so maybe the experience has changed since then. *Shrugs* There is no most overrated coaster to me...I'll go any that doesn't provide an excruciating amount of pain. -
Ok, I figured out how to tighten the seal on my TomTom, so now I've been able to test it out without any trouble. Overall, I can tell already that I made a good investment. Its instructions are clear, especially with the text to speech function, and its easy to follow.
-
Well, I made my choice. Today I bought a TomTom One 130 S. It was at a reasonable price compared to the other models at Best Buy, plus it has a text to speech feature that I think will come in handy. Update: Ok, I just did something really boneheaded, and tried to test this thing out on the road without really knowing what I was doing...and I nearly got myself into an accident because of it... So this Navigator came with this round black, sticky pad that I put on the upper section of my windshield...the device itself has a suction cup on the back, that you stick onto the pad...the problem is, the device doesn't want to stay put. The second I drove off, the suction cup gave out, and the thing dropped onto the area where I was driving, and distracted me, nearly making me crash into a ditch. I just want to ask anyone who knows how to use these things...What did I do wrong? Where exactly is this thing supposed to go in my car? and most important, how do you make the device stay put, when all its got in back is a darned suction cup?
-
This is all very interesting to hear. Cost will be a factor in what I buy as well. I'm not broke, but I am on a bit of a budget (Gas prices and all...), and I really don't need anything too fancy that uses bluetooth or makes phone calls or anything beyond just telling me where I need to go. But it's handy to hear all the brand names and everything.

I decided to finally go to Knoebel's next month...but, the directions given by both mapquest, and the Trip tic I got from AAA, are a little bit convoluted. So, I thought it might be best to look into buying a GPS navigator to help me find my way there, as well as help me for any other time I try to drive into an area I'm not too familiar with (Plus, I have Asperger's Syndrome, which I found out from a therapist I've been seeing for the past year, and following numbers and maps is generally my big weakness, so I think a GPS would help me in that regard too.) So, if there's anyone who owns one of these devices, I'd very much like to hear some advice on what brand or model I should go for. If it's a factor at all, my car is a 2004 Chevy Monte Carlo. Thanks to any who can help

RIP Carlin...You were the best comedian of all time, as far as I'm concerned.

Hey all, sorry for staying away from here for so long. I've finally decided where I want to go this summer. I've never been to SFGadv, and I decided this is the year I finally want to go. I want to visit sometime either next month or August (crowds are of no concern to me, hehe). I also decided that even though I have a car, and I'm a good driver, I don't want to try testing my mettle with NYC quite yet. So, I'm going to take a bus down to Port Authority in the City, and from there, get a bus to Jackson. The only thing left now to plan is booking a motel room in Jackson. So, I was wondering if there were any places near the park that someone could recommend...preferably a place that offers transportation to and from the park if it exists, since I won't have my car with me.

Disneyland in 1979

It is so awesome to be able to look back at Disney's past like this. Thanks for sharing these. -
Do NOT try this at your local waterpark!
Movieguy replied to Skramp's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Wow...that's one stunt that requires a lot of testicular fortitude, in my mind. -
Darien Lake: - Employees that actually give a damn about the guests would be nice. - Ride ops who know what they're doing. - Get a new coaster for once. Something that isn't painful, preferably. - Cleaning up the yucky lake would go a long way

Former Paramount Park patrons...
Movieguy replied to bgwfreak's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I find this all very surprising. After all, when I was going to CP in the 90's, one thing that struck me about the park was how efficient the coaster crews all were in running multiple trains. I've been to other parks where you're lucky to see even two trains running at the same time, and the crew just isn't as into it. But maybe this is proving what I was afraid of earlier...that Cedar Fair may be spreading itself too thin, like Six Flags did, and the quality of parks might be suffering. -
I don't know why people are so quick to defend the original Halloween, as if it's some sort of immortal classic...sure, it set the standard for slasher movies, but it's not really an untouchable classic in my opinion. It's an ok film, but it's a bit too slow for me, only two of the actors are really up to snuff in their skills, and the kills are too clean (I'm a gore fiend, sue me) . I see some people comparing this to Hitchcock, which I think is a little silly. John Carpenter's best movie will always be his remake of The Thing, and this film is simply what gave him the ability to make it. Not that I'm saying the remake was a true improvement. They did an interesting job at the start, kinda showing how Michael got this way, but at the same time showing he was just screwed up from the start, no matter what he might have gone through. It had some good gore, and gave Halloween an extra sense of brutality and grittiness I always felt it needed. But by the end, I just felt like the film dragged on for too long, and could have benefited from a few cuts. The ending was also unsatisfying. I know what Rob was trying to do, it just wasn't worth waiting nearly two hours for. 6/10

I never had a huge problem with the wand, but I'm glad to see they're returning the classic look of the geosphere. Hopefully this will mark the beginning of a new day in future world. First TT comes along, then M:S, both of which I enjoyed on my last trip, now they're giving SE a face lift that sounds very promising. All we can do now is sit back and see how it all turns out in early 2008.

I know a while back I was asking about a good route to Williamsburg, VA, but I recently decided that going all the way down there this summer simply wasn't feasible. I considered going back to Darien Lake, but I already did that last summer...so, I think I might try something a little bold (For me anyway), and drive my way down to SFGadv in NJ. The trouble is, Mapquest isn't helping me much...I'm putting in SFGadv's address as the destination, and I get this message every time: " MapQuest found a similar location for "Road 537, JACKSON, NJ 08527". Please select "Get Directions" or revise your search."...I clicked on "get directions", and while it showed Great Adventure as a destination, it neither showed up on the little map next to the list, nor could you click on anything for more directions. What I would like, is if anyone could either help me out with this stubborn mapquest interface, or tell me a good way to get to Great Adventure from where I am in Ithaca, NY. I'd appreciate it. Plus I'll probably need a hotel room for a night or two, so anyone with information on an affordable place I'd appreciate hearing from as well.

^ oh yeah, I may be a fan, but I know he's far from infallible in his style. Everyone is always so hot for Suspiria, when it's really just an average horror film with one or two great kills. What really makes it is Goblin's wonderful soundtrack.

I am a horror aficionado, and I can go on forever on the subject. I recently talked about 28 Weeks Later...I saw the first movie, 28 Days later, on DVD, and was a bit underwhelmed by it. Sure, the "zombies" were awesome, but about halfway, the film takes a complete 180 and becomes less and less interesting. 28 Weeks Later never takes its focus off what we all came to see, and gives it a twist of the tragic. There was one scene in particular (those who've seen it know what I'm talking about) that was horrifying, but also sad at the same time. I've never seen a horror movie really dabble in that before. I am also a fan of Argento's and saw another well made work of his called "Opera" a few days ago. If you have Netflix, I strongly suggest putting that in your queue. Another obscure title I recommend is "Nightmare in A Damaged Brain". While it lacks the style and finesse of Argento, it more than makes up for it in sheer brutality. A gore-fiend's dream.

28 Weeks Later 9/10 Awesome film. Much better than the original, I think. The only thing that keeps it from being a 10 is the lack of a coherent ending.

This summer, we're thinking about going on vacation somewhere, and one of the places that came up was Busch Gardens Europe. We were there once before, three years ago, and we all loved it. What wasn't so lovable, however, was the drive down. The traffic around much of Maryland and Washington on the way to Williamsburg was absolutely horrendous. I believe we were on I-95, though I don't remember 100% since it was my late father who did most of the driving. Anyway, it's exactly the reason why I have not been back down there for three years now. So, I decided to ask anyone here who may know this area better than we do...Are there any possible alternate routes for people trying to get to Williamsburg that aren't quite as congested? I'd appreciate any information anyone may have, thank you.

NEWS: New Darien Lake website up!
Movieguy replied to Homer's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm happy just to see Darien Lake cut free from the Six Flags chain. All those years of stagnation after the addition of Superman were just too much for me. Those guys couldn't even give us ONE significant new addition to the park after that. Let's hope the new management will really take steps to improve this place. God knows it's hard to get people to come visit a park in the middle of a cold, gray hellhole where it snows even in the spring. (We're about to get ANOTHER Nor easter today...in April!)
