Drop Towers On Buildings?
canadianparkfan posted a topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Most of us have heard of the big shot tower on the stratosphere, and those who were on the Japan tour would've seen the Intamin tower at the Tokyo Dome; however, after reading this article on Intamin's site, it seems they can build (and in some cases already have built) these towers pretty much anywhere. http://www.intaminworldwide.com/amusement/Towers/Giant+Drop+on+Building/tabid/142/ProductNumber/Giant+Drop+on+Building/language/de-DE/Default.aspx This got me thinking of places that might consider taking advantage of this. Obviously we've seen parks do it (Lex Luther & Zoomanjaro), but aside from one or two buildings similar to the stratosphere, I haven't seen it done anywhere else. Personally the first place that comes to mind for me is a place like the CN tower, or one of these soon to be built skyscrapers http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/upcoming-amazing-skyscrapers/ Would be amazing to see something that could go up nearly the entire side of the building. If installed on one of the buildings mentioned above, or even the Stratosphere (Big Shot 2.0), it would almost definetly shatter the height record for any drop towers currently out there. So, what are your thoughts? Any places you think might be a good fit for a tower? -

Questionable coaster elements
canadianparkfan replied to Password121's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Where is that abomination? It is in Mexico. Sadly it's not running as of earlier this year, I'd totally ride it. Sorry a bit OT but I just have to leave this one here.... Ride looks absolutely horrible, however, I have to give them some sort of credit for being a bit "innovative" and building an invert instead of a "traditional" coaster -

Add Galaxyland's Mindbender to the list of coasters people complain about as well. The ride is 30 years old, but runs as smooth possibly smoother, than any b&m I've done, and packs a massive punch. In many ways I'd say it feels very similar to the BTR clones, maybe even a little more intense than BTR, but a little less "relentless" (more time to catch your breath between elements). Unfortunately, I've heard many people mistake the snappy transitions/strong laterals for roughness. Personally love both BTR clones & the Edmonton Mindbender, because they've got that glass smooth feeling while still being able to blow you away every time you ride. -
Will gladly ride any drop tower. I've been on a few that provide far better airtime than most coasters, and as somebody mentioned earlier, they often have rather short lines due to the "fear factor". Just look at the Intamin 2nd gen tower at my home park CW. It's less than 100m away from Leviathan. In other words, it's directly next to the meanest looking, most intimidating and largest ride in the park (one of the largest in the entire world). Surprisingly, however, the GP always run and hop in line for Leviathan without a second glance, but arre nearly always hesitant to get onto the drop zone, making it a walk on nearly every time I've visited . Personally couldn't be happier with how this plays out, as I actually find the drop on drop zone to be far more enjoyable than Leviathan's first drop.

^^When I was saying b&m is "too smooth", it's not really that I have a problem with how shaky, or lack there of the ride is. It's simply that the actual forces aren't as strong on modern b&ms. Speaking of b&m, another weird moment I found was on Goliath at La Ronde. Right before the final breaks, the ride does sort of cool mini double down. It's weird, but in a good way This POV from TPR's channel shows what I mean: (Skip to 1:40) -
The "Pleasant/Unpleasant Surprise" Thread
canadianparkfan replied to cfc's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well your assumption's definetly right about behemoth ... Find the back car's my favourite on that coaster! Unlike the front, the turnaround actually provides some really cool forces in the back rows. Speaking of CW, guess this brings me to the pleasant and unpleasant surprise. To cut a long story short, while riding sky rider (RIP ) found the entire ride to be really smooth (at least way better than everyone had told me), and full of airtime and good positive forces to boot! Unfortunately, on both turnaround sections, this quickly turned into an unpleasant surprise full of head banging As a side note, always found it really cool how sky rider was one of the only coasters to my knowledge that one could design in RCT3 nearly perfectly, with no custom elements/mods required. -

^Very good point. Some coasters that look like nothing on a POV can actually provide some pretty crazy airtime Also agree that the b&ms can be pretty predictable. The two b&m hypers and one giga up here in Canada are pretty much nearly the same experience. That's probably why I like riding coasters by new/different manufacturers... Sometimes goes really bad, but I've been pleasantly surprised many times as well. Two of the coasters in my top five are proof of that -

Totally agree. IMO they've gone the opposite way of Arrow. Instead of really rough attractions, it's almost like their rides are now "too rideable" in a way. At least they've managed to keep business booming though! -

Attack on Titan. I'm sure they could theme something to the manoeuvre gear they use on the show. Could totally make a ride out of something in the above clip... Maybe a wing rider with keyholes that look like Titans/breaches in the 3 walls? If an anime was gonna get a ride, definetly see AtoT being easier to theme then dragonball Z.

The economy might not be in great shape right now, but also remember we got Behemoth during hard times as well (2008). -

Who has been to Calypso in Ontario?

Went a few years ago. Really liked the variety of attractions they offered. The aqualoop and Accelerators (tube speed slides) were probably my favourites. -

Reminds me of another company being accused of "stagnating" recently... Seems like history repeats itself *cough* B&M *cough* As for crazy elements, that above sidewinder pic looks just wrong. What coaster is that from?... Some Chinese knock off? -
La Ronde Discussion Thread
canadianparkfan replied to Skyscraper's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
IMHO, from what I can see, the water park in that pic looks better than 90% of all the water parks I've visited in that area, with Calypso being the only exception . Others I've been to/heard of in the area were pretty sketchy, and I've heard some pretty aweful horror stories about some of the park's mentioned in the post with the pic. Too bad the one at la ronde didn't work out. As for what I think's gonna happen at La Ronde, I could see a flat and/or coaster in the next few years. Would be really cool to see the old Condor get replaced (has never been working when I've been at the park) with the new one Huss is offering, and monster get RMCed, but really not sure how likely any of those two things are in the next coming seasons. -

So are orange flags for the fireworks ? Also, as one of the mods on CWMania pointed out, CP looks like they might be only a few weeks away from their "announcement". If so, CW may announce what's going on soon after. -
Robb & Elissa in Japan - 2015!
canadianparkfan replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Amazing trip reports! Seeing that picture of the standup train really made me miss the little piece of Japanese rides we just recently lost (Skyrider at CW). It wasn't the absolute best coaster, but whenever I rode it, always made me think about heading over to Japan someday. Now it's gone, I just wanna head over there even more. Speaking of TOGO, do you guys have any video of one of those crazy TOGO para troopers in action? -

Not to get my hopes up, however, Monster getting RMCed would definetly make La Ronde worth going to for more than just half a day lol ... Right now, they have two great rides in Vampire and Goliath (better than the wonderland b&ms imo), as well as some decent flats, and a surprisingly fun coaster with Cobra. Oh, I almost forgot their log flume!... Great ride, and in some ways a piece of Canadian history, as it opened with Expo 67. IMO, an RMC would at least beef up the park's lineup, and definetly make the place worth visiting for more than half a day to marathon Vampire lol. Besides rounding out the park (or at least starting that process), an RMC at La Ronde would mean Robb would have to visit sometime... Besides riding Iron Monster, we may also be able to hear his rendition of "the log flume song...Canadian edition"! -
