Ever had a black out on a coaster?
mightypotato replied to Dark Vampire's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I blacked out after getting off TTD. I got off, sat down and then I woke up in a flower bed. Good times. -
Ride Reliability
mightypotato replied to ConleyKE's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
From every time I've been to CP (all of 4), Dragster has been down twice and Wicked Twister has been down twice. Everything else was open on each visit. The only really long lines I had were for Dragster and MF. Everything else was fairly quick and easy. -
The Richter Scale does not work on an exponential scaling system, it works on a logarithmic scaling system. Matt "Physical Geographer" Bryane P.S....the park looks really nice, I wish I actually had some talent in landscaping in RCT3.

Post your milestone coasters
mightypotato replied to bgwfreak's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
My count isn't that organized, but I think I can manage to put together a few milestones: 1st coaster ever: Mighty Canadian Minebuster (PCW) 1st inversion: Alpengeist (BGE) 1st B&M: Alpengeist (BGE) 1st Intamin: Superman: Ride of Steel (SFDL) 1st launch: Rock 'n Roller Coaster (MGM) 50th coaster: Revenge of the Mummy (USF) Most recent addition: Italian Job: Stunt Track (PCW) -
Cedar Point or Islands of Adventure?
mightypotato replied to redfoot12's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Definitely Universal/BGT. I've been to both IOA and CP, and I enjoy going to IOA far more. Its more of a "fun" park that doesn't really emphasize so much on intense thrill, but rather having a good time. Plus, you can actually eat green eggs and ham at IOA. That was the highlight of my 2004 trip. -
The Best Terrain Coaster
mightypotato replied to dr.gumbo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I'm going to have to say Dragon Mountain at Marineland. Its actually a fun ride, despite the arrowness of it. Second place would be Big Bad Wolf. -
Best (and worst) "Sounds" on a coaster
mightypotato replied to Jon Sabo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I love the roar that B&M coasters make, specifically Hulk at IOA. As for what I hate? The TOGO death rattle. The ride sounds like its going to tear itself apart. -
Busch vs. Busch
mightypotato replied to dr.gumbo's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I've only been to BGA once, and that was in 1998, and the last time I was at BGE was 2001, so my memory is a bit hazy of the parks. But, based on what I remember, I give the edge to BGE. In my mind, it looks nicer than BGA did. BGA seemed open and sparse, kind of like a desert. BGE on the other hand seemed completely full of trees, buildings, wildlife, etc. -
I remember on my first trip to Cedar Point, there was a crane sitting on one of the footers for Mantis. It was just after the first helixy type thing after the dive loop. The track comes close to the footer at that point, and it definitely looked like the bird was going to get hit. Every time the train came, the bird would duck, missing the train. People were cheering for that bird until it flew away.

The last time I was there, it was pay one price. I'm only assuming this hasn't changed.

I think the SkyScreamer is the world's tallest "triple tower" drop ride...or something like that. I remember when it opened, it had some really obscure record title. Dragon Mountain, while may look boring is actually a fairly fun ride. The last time I went to Marineland, there was next to no line, so my sister and I rode it for a solid 30-45 minutes. Good times.

Roller coaster Designer

Since you're in engineering at UW, you're most likely in co-op. Why not try to approach a company about a possible co-op position with them for your next work term? It never hurts to try, and this could be your first foot in the door. -

I thought Switzerland spoke French and German. I guess I'm mistaken. -

Probably for the big two companies, Intamin and B&M. I think S&S Power/Arrow is US based. But they mainly focus on flat rides than coasters now. To get into the business, you'd definitely need drafting experience as well as a well versed background in physics and mathematics. This would be the real deal, not RCT or even No Limits. -
Whats your favorite Vekoma?
mightypotato replied to Neogreeneyez's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
By far, its Rock and Roller Coaster at WDW. That ride is so much fun, and unnecessarily smooth for a Vekoma. That, and Aerosmith rocks. -
Vortex at PCW is pretty bad. You're coming through the last turn at a fairly decent speed, then you hit the brake run and *KA-FWOMP!* you come to a complete stop extremely quickly. In fact, the support structure at the brake run actually shakes when it happens. Its the only part I don't really like about this otherwise awesome ride.

PortAventura Discussion Thread
mightypotato replied to Shockwave's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^^ They're not 4D seats. The Wing Walker seats do not rotate. They just happen to be on the side of the train, like a 4D coaster. Intamin's answer to S&S/Arrow's 4D coaster is the Ball Coaster, not the Wing Walker. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

I question the validity of the Dippin' Dots guy. I would take the world of the Lemon Chill guy way over the word of the Dippin' Dots guy. -

^^^ But that's from the track that has already been delivered. There's probably a lot more track coming. Remember, this ride isn't going to be open until 2007, so there's going to be a lot of construction and a lot of track coming to CP. -
My first coaster was the Mighty Canadian Minebuster at PCW. I remember being really scared going down the first drop, and not really liking it. That was a very very long time ago. It must have been in the late 1980's or so. My first looping experience didn't happen until 1997, when I rode Alpengeist at BGE. It took a long time from my first coaster to my first inversion.

If its the Wild Beast at PCW, then I know what you're talking about. I call it the "ouch turn". For me, its any time you get stuck on the lift hill. I know it doesn't happen often, but when it does, its a weird feeling. I remember getting stuck on Dueling Dragons: Ice a few years back and my sister was freaking out.
