Andy Shine's Quiz Time
Loefet replied to Simon Baynham's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
18/20, and would have had one more if I just have read the questions properly, one was a total guess though (I have no idea about old American parks)... I would like to add a fault in that quiz though, question 9 don't even have the right answer to choose from. The one that manufactured Lisebergbanan is Zeirer and builder is BHS, if it was about the designer then it would make sense... -
The iPad - Apple's Take On The Tablet Computer
Loefet replied to Wes's topic in Random, Random, Random
I had my hopes for this one, but they fell short when they announced it... I just wish that they had more expansion possibility (USB, SD card reader, etc.), more space, a better OS that allow you to run more than one app at a time as well as "real" software, it had a real GPS chip in it. Then it would have been a perfect travel partner, instead of lugging around a wad of papers, a laptop, a GPS device, etc... Think that I just have to way until all the "clones" appear and finde one that fit my needs. I have seen news pointing put that several (40+) small tablets coming in the near future... -
An Odd Noise on Medusa
Loefet replied to atem122's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^ If it were the track section joints, then shouldn't every wheel that passes over them make a sound, and not just once/section? As for the Medusa one then it's definitely the anti-roll back. Seems like the train is a bit slower than the correct speed to attain 0 g over the Zero-G roll so it causes hang time, which makes the anti-roll back devices to fall and make the sound... If that's the case, is the same sound herd on Hydras Jo-Jo roll? -
Swedish parks with on/off site accommodation. Skara Sommarland have camping grounds, apartments and cabins (on-site). Kålmården have a Hotel (on-site). Liseberg run their own Hotels, camping grounds, cabins, hostel and guest harbour... (non of them are on-site, but most are just a few minutes away).

Rooftop Tokyo Halfpipe coaster
Loefet replied to The Doctor's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I think that I spotted it on the way to Fuji-Q in 2007, or was it to Nasu 2008 with the TPR bus... While on the subject of Don Quijote stores, then this isn't the only store with a ride attached to it, there is one in Osaka that had a Ferris wheel on the side, (had because it was removed during the last year since it wasn't there as the ECC trip passed by last September)... Weird wheel -

I did it on a normal day... By the way it's not a clearance issue, it's due to the rider "standing up" It will never happen with "normal" people that likes to have lap-bar snug, but some (like us) likes to have loads of space and Liseberg is nice enough to let us ride with it as well , which means that you practically stand up over the hills and thus hit's objects... Scandinavia isn't an issue (as I explained with Balder), go to South Korea and ride with your hands in the air and see how many (not if) times you hit stuff... I think that the manufacturers designs the clearance envelopes for each ride with the help of some standards of a human body So they would probably be the same all around the world. The pull through is just Intamins way of double test everything that have been simulated, to see if everything works the way it should. And I guess they might even do it for Legal/Insurance reasons as well... -

Loefet replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Yes they did... While doing a Pull-through the do much more than just check the reach envelope. They check all the track connections, brake fins, lift hill, overall clearances between the car/wheels and the track itself, etc. It's just something Intamin wants to do just to make sure that it will work the first time, instead of just hoping for the best... -

Loefet replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Well they start by adding all trims (just so that they can check the clearances during the pull-through), and when the testing begins they see if they need to remove any due to the section afterwards is to slow. So in the end they might be forced to remove all of them, only time will tell... (Here is hoping ) -

Thanks everyone for the kind words!! Yeah the Ice Bar is back, this time it's a more permanent feature instead of the temporary building it was located in in 2006, so hopefully it will be a permanent drinking hole for the seasons to come. -

Found a newish article about the expansion of Liseberg which includes an image with some rough sketches about what goes where, it also looks like the expansion will include a monorail of some sort. And according to that then it won't be ready until in 12-15 years time but that will fit nicely with the 100 year celebrations instead... They also confirm that they are very interested in the gearbox factories to the south east... GT.se - Så vill Liseberg växa söderut [sWEDISH] -
Here is a few mixed pictures from the 2009 winter season of Liseberg that were taken over a few visits in December last year. They were celebrating their 10 year anniversary since they first featured the Christmas Season in 2000. I'm sorry to say that none of the big rides were open, and that parts of the park was of limits to visitors (mainly the top of the hill except for the observation tower) and that most of the opened areas were filled with small stands selling a lot of local specialities, handicraft, etc... But I have to say one thing riding Rabalder when it's-10°C is really not pleasant... Pictures!! Signature marker of Christmas at Liseberg!! Oh I forgot to tell you that we have found another place to take awesome images of Balder It's really hard to get better views of this turn or here Towers!! Coaster in the snow I get frostbites just looking at it Another load of soon to be ice cubes Don't they look happy... There are other ways to cool your self down here... Closed due to the cold, I wonder if they were having problem with ice-bergs... Those old school cars don't seem to have any problem with the cold Christian stuff Both fake and real snow It's so much better in the summer, oh wait it isn't The banana is hibernating Here comes the night lighting Ice Sculpture Liseberg in the snow Tower + Wheel Balder's big turn Probably the best airtime hill in the world Oh I haven't posted one of these in a while Getting darker This looks awesome at night Oh it's got brighter again From one of the parking garages in the area Chair swingy thing Same through some night lighting Here comes the night stuff Signature shot Balder lighting See I told you it looks good Boat Balder again Giant Christmas tree Dance-floor Christmas tree again Another Ice sculpture YAY, ICE BAR!! Liseberg Discussion Thread

^ Yeah, they will most likely have a new big part of the park ready in about 3-4 years time with the planned expansion into the southern parking lot. They would have had this done a lot sooner if the planning for the Gothenburg city railway tunnel had received it's verdict a lot sooner, since some of the purposed layouts were supposed to go under the southern parking lot. Judging by the planning that I have seen then they will be building a parking garage at the bottom end (to compensate for the loss of parking spaces) and buildings (shops/offices) along the side of the street to reduce the noise towards the city. Even though they still have a lot of room left for a big coaster don't expect anything there, since that area will be more of a year around attraction, so maybe a large indoor section. The site already have a building permit of up to build up to 35 meter tall structures without any big trouble... Due to the economical recession then I would also keep my eyes on the SAAB gearbox factory to the south-east of the park, since that will certainly be a great place to see a giant expansion in the future. About a new attraction then I didn't see any markers or anything while visiting the park this winter, but after the removal of Kulingen then they have a great space on the top of the hill for something, and since that part of the park have been of limits during the winter season then they have had a lot of time to do preparations etc. They could in my view easily fit a spinner, euro-fighter or other coaster that there... Other 2010 Liseberg news are that, after a long battle with the residents in the area, they have finally received a 3 year building permit for a temporary Observation Wheel in the harbour of Gothenburg (which undoubtedly will will get the nickname "Little London Eye" ). They have got complaints that the wheel will cause: noise, vibrations, damage to the underlying tunnel, etc... But the "best" complaint is that a little girl said that they shouldn't build the Wheel since she likes to walk in that spot once a week... A winter photo update will be posted later... -

^ Crap I was going to make a 2009 season review in the past weeks but it hadn't come into fruition due to no new ride have been announced since I wanted to have that together with the review. But as you said, the winter season 2009 have been a great success, it broke the attendance record. But I have a feeling that the 10 year anniversary day with a 10 SEK entry fee (normally 70 SEK) helped a lot to bring those extra visitors to the park. That weekend brought 90000 visitors!! Which is incredible... Seeing to the whole of 2009 then it have been a great year, especially since it have been in the middle of a financial "crisis" so big kudos to Liseberg and it's management. As _Joel_ said Mats Wedin have announced his resignation as the CEO of Liseberg, and that the change of leadership will be in the beginning of 2011. Mats will then have been at the park for 23 years and he have done a great job of managing and expanding the park over the years. But he won't still leave the business completely since he will still keep his post as the chairman of IAAPA Europe. Maybe 2010 will see something great as it's is the final year for Mats, I have herd rumours that points towards that, but the Liseberg staff I have spoken to wont say anything about next year... Other important news: The ICE BAR is back!! -

^ Well S&S also makes the El-Loco coaster (Mumbo Jumbo, Steel Hawg) so you can't assume that it will be a Free-Fly just yet. An El-Loco would possibly fit that ground better then a Free-Fly ever will. It can also be that the guy you were talking to had misunderstood everything and it's just a second-hand coaster from an American park. Do you know if any rides have come to Israel from an American park recently? -
