Columbia Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 This conversion has happened at least once before. See what it is classified as. This is for those who are still debating it. ^ Thank you! I was too lazy to go back and find it... They're expecting it to be up and ready for 2011 season, right? It would be quite interesting to see test runs - not just for the "look" of the ride, but what it may *sound* like. El Toro has a distinctive sound, regular woodies have one, so I imagine TG-II will as well.
BrandonR Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 Yep, the ride is scheduled to reopen next year, to coincide with the park's 50th anniversary. It'll definitely be a steel ride, with polymer wheels on steel track. I'm just curious if the wooden structure will "give" more than steel supports would, providing a different ride experience or feeling. I'll be sure to regularly update my site with new Giant construction pics!
The Yeti Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 Wow, this ride is going to be insane. We're looking at the future best coaster in Texas by far, and I feel that I can safely say that with only looking at a small portion of the ride.
robbalvey Posted July 18, 2010 Author Posted July 18, 2010 It's a steel coaster. End of debate. --Robb
FLIPDUDE Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 You only say that because it doesn't resemble a monorail. I personally think it looks beautiful. Like a Deja Vu Showgirl! Resisting... Urge... To turn that... Into a lil' Robby Rob Comic...
Guy T. Koepp Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 ^^The world could use a bit more of tha Robby Robb!
WFChris Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Can I be the first to say that the 'double up' feature after the first drop looks horribly uncomfortable? Perhaps its a different part of the ride being built? It just looks too small and tight after that enormous first drop. Could be wrong though.

Horrible uncomfortable or crazily insane, I can see it going either way. Could produce a nice pop of airtime. But yeah, it does look pretty small compared to the drop.

Columbia Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 It's a steel coaster. End of debate. --Robb I nominate Robb to be the new governing body of theme park classifications and euphemisms! Looking forward to the shoehorning of the word "donkey" somewhere in a coaster element. One can only think (and hope) that Son of Beast's fate may lie a thousand miles away in the heart of Texas. If this install is successful - could we see even more radical "steel on wood" coasters? (I.E. return of "Looping" wooden coasters?)
triggernel Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 ^But like you so eagerly quoted, "It's a Steel Coaster"
Pingu1651 Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 ^^ Some people are referring to it as an "Iron Horse", but I think Iron Donkey works better. IMO, a double up is a weird thing to have after a first drop. With the steel tracking it should be a good element, but the double-up is more of a midcourse element, you know? That's like a first drop going straight to a corkscrew. The Efteling GCI has a crazy triple-up I hear, though.

Meh, I've always thought a giant corkscrew after a first drop would be neat to have instead of the typical vertical loop being the first element. Yay for originality.

They had that...it was called Drachen Fire...
BrandonR Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 They had that...it was called Drachen Fire... I always thought that strange element was closer to a diving loop than a corkscrew, despite what they called it. And of course it'd be nice if it were made by a company that wasn't attempting to work outside its technical ability.

Lots of wood coasters (operating and defunct) had a double-up following the first drop.

I think SFOT is about an hour and a half from my family in Texas, and if this thing turns out as awesome as it looks, there's going to be a visit to my faaavorite family members before long!
SuperSous Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I hope the project is a huge success, cause if it is it could give sooo many rough coasters a new life...
BrandonR Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Went to the park today (July 20) and added a few more Texas Giant construction photos. Here are a few: The rest are here. They've completed the valley on the first drop and I must say, the pictures don't do the double-up justice. It's so much shorter than the first drop it's crazy looking.
KDcoasterMAN Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Even though the perspectives are off, I wanted to see what it would look like... Full Drop and Up
BrandonR Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Ohh fancy! I wanted to get an aerial shot of all that but the Oil Derrick (observation tower) was shut down due to high winds.
