Six Flags Discovery Kingdom (SFDK) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

I wish SFDK would add some more flats. They have a pretty decent selection, but the last adult flat they added (I don't count SkyScreamer) was Tazmanian Devil in 1999. I think they could benefit from some big flats like a Screamin' Swing or something out in front of the park to pull some of the crowd that mobs the coasters.

I agree! That's the only hang-up in the never-ending debate I find myself in with certain people about whether SFDK is better or a certain other park that I will not speak of here. The other park has many great flats but SFDK only has a few.

^Who wants a TPR meet-up?

I won't be able to make it then. Besides, at this time of year (December), the park gets so empty that ERT is superfluous. Is anyone up for a meet-up on Sunday, December 2? That's when I plan on going.

Yeah I can't make it for Black Friday either but the 2nd is definitely a possibility. I'll let you know if I decide to go that day.

Also I drove by SFDK yesterday and Medusa and Kong and Boomerang (I think, it was hard to look and drive at the same time) all had their lifts decked out with blue lights for Holiday in the Park. It looked awesome, can't wait to see it when I can ride them instead of just driving past!

HIP TR:

Awesome day at the park today, probably my best overall day so far. The ERT was fantastic, I got row 1 on the first train on SUF (Could have had my own train but told the ops they could wait for some more people) and got another immediate ride in row 6. Walked over to V2 where they hadn't launched any trains yet because no one was going over there (they were all still running to SUF) and I did in fact get my very own V2 train Rode that one front row and back row and then wandered over to Roar.

Roar was only running 1 train all day today which meant 20 minute lines during ERT and 45-60 min que after about 3:00 (In fact I didn't even see the other train, in rehab possibly), so I only took one ride in the back row. Shocker of the day though - Roar was running awesome! By far the best experience I've had on Roar, plenty of airtime and not too rough, it was haulin'. I would have a much higher overall opinion of that ride if it ran like that all the time. Wish I would have had time to ride it again today.

At 2pm when the rest of the park opened I headed over to the other side of the park to give Medusa some love and it also seemed to be running faster and smoother than normal. At this point I left the park right when it started to get busy as I wanted to get some night rides in but didn't want to stay all day, so I hopped over the freeway and caught Flight at Century (good flick).

When I got back I headed for Kong, which was also running only one train (though merited, it still was only a one or two train wait..there was no need for a second one) and luckily it was the orange train. Sat in the far seat back row and got probably my smoothest ride yet. Coming down the exit ramp I heard someone who was on my train say "Wow that was amazing that was so much smoother than when we rode it earlier today I can't believe it's the same ride" and they were only running that one train all day, so who knows. I guess Kong is just a crap shoot, but it sure is fun when it's not trying to kill you.

I got a night ride in on Medusa, the only coaster with any decent HIP theming (candy canes lit up on the side of the lift and green/red lights on the inside of the lift) sat in the back row and actually got a little bit of airtime! I absolutely love the back row of Medusa I tried to give sky screamer a whirl but once again it was not to be, I got in line and it promptly broke itself..that ride just doesn't like me.

Last rides of the night on V2 and then one last spin on SUF...sat in row 5 on SUF and actually got some sustained airtime on the first drop after the roll! I was fully out of my seat for a good second or two...first time that's happened, pleasant surprise! (Maybe because the bar wasn't as tight as usual so I didn't notice before..maybe its a row 5 thing, dont think I've sat there before)

Got in 11 rides overall in the 4 hours I was there, definitely not bad. Also thanks SFDK for the free cookie and hot chocolate!

Incidentally..I noticed someone was actually using a flash pass during ERT which I thought was funny, but I noticed that they are currently selling FP's at half off throughout Holiday In The Park.

That is exactly how I feel about it! Seems like every other time I go to the park I'm like, "Hey Kong is underrated! I enjoyed that!" and every other time I'm like, "Owww...Never... never again."

Great TRs, guys! Did either of you do any of the Christmas-themed shows or activities? (Besides the free food)

I agree! That's the only hang-up in the never-ending debate I find myself in with certain people about whether SFDK is better or a certain other park that I will not speak of here. The other park has many great flats but SFDK only has a few.

That's interesting to hear, SFDK always came across as the standard for a good flat ride collection between HUSS Top Spin and Frisbee , Zamperla Hawk48, Zamperla "Joker" [RIP], and the classic teacups, wave swinger, swinging ship, and scrambler. Grant it, we did lose Jambo but the Starflyer more than made up for that. What does it for me at SFDK is the atmosphere in those flat ride sections really bring the park together [well-themed and all-round enjoyable]. Maybe my thirst for flats is easier to quench.

Well CGA has the relative equivalents of SFDK's flats, plus a bunch more (including flyers and a great drop ride). SFDK isn't doing too bad compared to their SoCal sister, but they could use a few more. And you're completely right about the atmosphere.

^^Great photo TR! I love all the Christmas lights. I drove by SFDK on the way home today and I really can't wait to go to Holiday in the Park! I'm thinking I'll visit next Sunday.

Hi everyone. I'll be heading to the park this Sunday (12/2) to ride myself silly. While the weather is not so great right now, the forecast is for a 30% chance of rain, with the highest chance in the morning, clearing up by the afternoon. Will anyone else be heading there as well? There has been some talk of a little TPR meet-up, and this month would be the perfect time (how I love coasters that are walk-ons). Anyone else up for a few hours of SFDK fun this Sunday?

I was going to go this Sunday but the storms aren't looking to promising (Heavy rain up in Vallejo, 80% chance this Sunday). Hoping to get my S:UF credit soon.

Well that's odd. Weather.com says 80% chance of rain (with potential for flooding), just like you said. But, weatherunderground.com says only a 30% chance. Two very conflicting forecasts. I'll keep my eye on the forecasts and hope things look better.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took a quick trip to the Kingdom this past Sunday. The crowds were nice and low the entire day...I love this time of year! Superman was fickle throughout the day. It was down when I first got there (prompting a response of "AGAIN?!?" from another guest), and took about a half-hour to open. It also went down a little before 5, but opened shortly thereafter. Other than that, it was a great day. I went back and forth between Medusa and Superman. Roar had only one train, and I didn't feel like waiting. I typically avoid Kong like the plague, and I just wasn't in the mood for V2. I also got a ride on Tasmanian Devil. I haven't been on it in a really long time, so I forgot how much fun that is. The airtime is nice, and it's a really generous ride cycle. I need to make that a regular part of my SFDK visits.

On a related subject, a few of us RAWKIN_coaster38, Angry_Gumball, and I are having a little TPR meet-up this coming Sunday (12/16). Our thoughts are: "The more, the merrier". Would anyone like to join us? It should be a fun day...with little to no waiting in lines!

I am planning on going on Sunday as well... The weather report as of today is projecting rain which is unfortunate, but could most definitely change.

With 1 train operation what kind of line does Roar usually have?

I've been overly obsessive in checking the weather today as I really don't want to have to put off our meetup again. The latest shows the following...

Weather.com: 50% chance of rain/showers, partly cloudy

Weather Underground: 40% chance rain/showers

KTVU (local news): AM showers

I'll continue to scope out what the deal is with the weather since it can change for the better or for the worse as the week progresses. It is beginning to remind me of CGA's opening day 2012...the night before I was constantly checking out the radars, seeing how much rain was still coming, where it was going and what it would be like in the next 4 hours or so...to wake up to blue skies and heading off to the park. So let's hope!

Anyone know where to find footage/pictures of V2's modification?

How do you mean? I have a number of photos when they were in the process of changing it at home (they are pretty amateur though, I was 14). I can upload them later tonight/early tomorrow if you like.

I'm not too worried. The forecast shows clear the day before and the day after. The likelihood that it happens directly over Vallejo on the hours of operation and is so much that it would cause issues isn't likely. I think the worst we will have to worry about is some showers. I'll be there either way, so you guys better show up too. Haha.

Glad someone revived the SFDK thread again!

Tazmanian Devil is probably my favorite flat in the park, with VooDoo a close second. I know several people who've said they don't like Taz because it makes them too dizzy. I love it though, if you get lucky and get on the high end of the swing, you get some really great floater.

And glad to see our little TPR meet-up is drawing more people! It's still a little early but by Friday or Saturday someone either needs to collect phone numbers or we need to arrange a meet-up time and place for all of us to connect on Saturday.

The reason why I love Taz...it runs a nice, long cycle, spins pretty fast (who cares if I get dizzy, lol) and the whole stomach tingles you get on the high swings (which last I remember there are plenty to be had).

I know some members that plan on going have my number or are on my Facebook (which I can just message them via FB messenger). Really looking forward to our SFDK run this Sunday! (Yes I'm staying positive that this is going to happen). Would be nice to form a list of who's all coming by the end of the week so we have an idea how many are coming and who we are still waiting for as far as meeting up.

If anyone's down for any 'insane moments' as my usual group tends to look for at CGA, one thing we need to do assuming it's open is hop on the tea cups and get it spinning...get as many of us as we can who are willing to spin and give it a go! Or if you want to put a nice scare into you, hop on the balloon tea cups back in Tava's Jungle Land (those are insanely easy to spin due to lighter weight tubs and lack of any braking mechanism.

Quick question to you guys with season passes- I purchased one for my trip last weekend to SFMM. I printed the ticket out & scanned it to get it, but never got it processed. Can I still get in with that print out at SFDK?

Link to comment

^ No, you have to have it processed at the issuing park. In fact SFMM likely won't let you back in off that print out. They generally require you process on the first visit. You will likely need to go to Guest Services on your next visit to get in, but usually they count that as your one time free look-up, as if you forgot your card at home.

Without a doubt though, you will be turned away from SFDK until the pass is processed.

I'm no too worried either, for the same reason you gave. I'll keep checking the weather to see if it changes, but I'm planning on being there. I'm psyched to see so many people joining in...should be a fun little party! As for gathering contact info and establishing a place to meet up, I'd rather not do it, as my wife is currently out of town, effectively making me a single parent (keeps you busy and tired). It would be great if someone else would do it. However, if nobody else can do it, I'd be willing to gather contact info and figure out a meeting place.
