NEWS: New York-New York to gain Hershey's Chocolate World

A pizzeria where people bake their own pizzas. A unique coffee house brand popular with locals. A two-story, flagship retail store by Hershey’s. All are coming to MGM Resorts – and specifically to New York-New York and Monte Carlo – within the next year.

This morning, Company leaders announced a project to transform the Strip-facing façades of both New York-New York and Monte Carlo, as well as build an outdoor entertainment plaza between the two resorts. By the time it’s completed early next year, the project will create a contiguous, pedestrian-friendly district of restaurants, shops and stores between the resorts, extending west from Las Vegas Boulevard along Rue de Monte Carlo to the site of the planned arena behind.

“As we all know, Las Vegas Boulevard is one of the most dynamic streets in the world. Our new plaza will welcome guests and entice them to come in and experience all of the wonderful amenities we have within the resort,” said Monte Carlo General Manager Patrick Miller. “We believe we will have the opportunity to welcome millions of new guests to Monte Carlo annually, and we know that our employees and their fantastic service will convert them to loyal customers.”

Construction is expected to begin within weeks. The façade renovations and outdoor plaza are expected to be completed in early 2014, with the previously announced arena to follow around 2016.

Rue de Monte Carlo will remain as it is, a through street from Las Vegas Boulevard to Frank Sinatra. The former CityCenter Residential Sales Pavilion, on the corner of Rue de Monte Carlo and the Boulevard, will be razed. A key element of the project is a park stretching along the southern side of Rue de Monte Carlo featuring dining pavilions, performance spaces and water features, creating areas for guests to sit, relax and people watch.

In addition to the park, the $100 million project involves several new venues.

Shake Shack will be a burger stand featuring all-natural burgers, flat-top dogs, frozen custard, beer, wine and more by restaurateur Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. It will be situated along Rue de Monte Carlo and will serve as a kind of entrance to the park plaza area.

Double Barrel will be a casual roadhouse restaurant and bar with café seating in front of Monte Carlo, operated by sbe, the same M life hospitality partner behind Bellagio’s Hyde Lounge.

Boca Park’s favorite coffee shop, Sambalatte, is also coming to Monte Carlo.

800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria, in front of Monte Carlo, will feature build-your-own personal pizzas prepared in about a minute in an 800-degree wood-burning oven.

Hershey’s Chocolate World™ will be a major addition to the front of New York-New York. The new, two-story flagship store promises to be an interactive, experiential destination that celebrates the Hershey’s-branded products that inspire the “Hershey’s Happiness” mantra.

“With the addition of Hershey’s Chocolate World, we have added one of the world’s most beloved brands. This partnership will bring an excitement to our corner of the Strip that is unlike anything in Las Vegas and we are thrilled to be a part of it,” said New York-New York President Cynthia Kiser Murphey. “These are exciting times for us at New York-New York as we re-imagine the Las Vegas experience for all of our guests and visitors.”

The Company also announced various architecture and design firms affiliated with the project today. For details on that, read the full press release on the MGM Resorts website. Additionally, both New York-New York and Monte Carlo have introduced their own web pages about the project.

Only downside:vMonte Carlo is set to lose what little theming it has left as well (the fountains in the front) as part of this, and the NYNY facade will lose some of its theming as well.

I've only been to Las Vegas twice but both times I stayed at NY NY resort. I really like staying there and I think the new places to eat will be nice. i remember my second visit, I said this resort needs more places to eat. It will probably make M&M World upgrade their store to compete with Hershey. And who knows it may keep the snappers away.

^Monte Carlo is also going to lose the best parking on the strip! That outside lot across the street. I'm not a fan of parking garages and I loved being able to park in that lot right across from the front desk!

But we may be gaining those awesome Hershey's milkshakes and other ice-cream concoctions--well, that would work for me, anyway.

This will be a blow to the business of M&M World across the street.

Aren't they across the street from each other in Time Square as well?

They can settle this in a Caged Death Match at the next Vegas Wrestlemania.

If they sell the chocolate ketchup from Chocolate World by Hershey Park, I'll be sold!

Chocolate... what??? Is that sweet? Or is it like... earthy with unsweetened chocolate?

All in all, these projects look amazing!

It's too bad that T.D.M. is popular with the GP... (it is, right?)

They're not wasting any time on construction...A lane of traffic is closed going Southbound on the strip to become the sidewalk.

Drained and ready to be torn up.

^Are they getting rid of that bridge? I hope not. Otherwise the project looks good.

Having Hershey's World and M&M's World across the street from each other will have some tourists who wouldn't necessarily pay attention to one of them by themselves visit them both. Now they just need a Ghiradelli Store nearby, say at Planet Hollywood.

^^There's conflicting reports as to whether or not the Bridge is staying. It is also being speculated the 9-11 memorial (shirts in the display case) and Statue of Liberty lagoon are goners, so the Statue can become another pedestrian entrance into the building.

^ From my sources inside NYNY you are right about the statue entrance but the bridge is most definitely staying. That bridge plays host to some extremely popular (and financially successful) parties for special events like New Years, St. Pattys, etc. They don't want to lose that cash cow.

I'm sure they're trying to get it done as fast as they can before they run out of money and have to halt production like almost every other project in Vegas.

I also loved the parking they are taking out, but I'm so excited for the Hershey addition!

I decided to go play tourist this morning and snapped some photos of NYNY and Monte Carlo's construction.

Enjoy!

Love this marketing.

They provided some peak holes in the O's of the NYNY logos. Construction around the Bridge will fill in most the water area with paths to allow access to the shops that will line the front of the hotel.

Inside the front of the hotel looks like this.

Up on the MGM foot bridge, you can see they have really torn up the front.

They have also taken out the water area around the Statue of Liberty, including the Sept. 11 Memorial. They will be adding a street level entrance for the casino here.

Over at Monte where it's harder to get good views, they have added a large structure near the marquee.
