Jew
Dodgers with the best record in baseball! Yeah, the Philadelphia 76ers started off 3-0, and they just now ended a 26 game losing streak. Hey, the Dodgers already bested the 76er's start!
bbomser
Hell, the Dodgers played 3 games before 27 other teams even played one! So when are we calling opening day this year? Was it the 2 "Games" Down-under? That one Sunday night game, or the first Monday? And someone tell me why the Astros and Yankees waited until Tuesday??? jray21
While this is technically AAA related, I thought I'd share it. Jacob went to his first baseball game tonight! It was the Reno Aces (Diamondbacks) vs. the Las Vegas 51s (NY Mets). We lost, but it was a pretty great night! I got the tickets from work, and they were for the 'best seats in the house.' It was two recliners on the third base side. They were so comfortable, I was almost falling asleep. It was also perfect with Jacob. The seats are all by themselves so we had a ton of room for his diaper bag and stuff, and he wasn't annoying anyone nearby. It's also where the mascot and cheerleaders hung out so he had fun with them the whole night. Then, they put us on the big screen and introduced us and mentioned it was Jacob's first game. A little after that, an older lady asked us if we wanted a foul ball that they had caught since it was his first game! So for Jacob's first game he got to sit in the best seats, hang out with the cheerleaders and mascot, get on the big screen, and was given a game ball! Granted, it wasn't a major league game, but it was still fun. He's going to be really bugged at the next game when we're in cold plastic seats and nothing happens. Jew
That's why going to minor league games is so fun...the promotions are unique and service/food items/etc. are usually really good!
bbomser
Speaking of Minor Leagues, the local Single A team down here, Brevard County Manatees (Sea Cows!), Affiliate of the Brewers brought baseball back to Dodgertown for a night Tuesday evening. As if was Jackie Robinson Day across the Major Leagues, two teams (Mantees and Lakeland Flying Tigers) were able to grace the field that the man himself once took by storm. You have to admit that that's pretty cool. There was also talk about having this as an annual game, with Brevard and Port St. Lucie (Mets) facing off each year, with a rotation of who's the home team. Makes sense to me, and I hope it does become an annual tradition. Old Article about the Day: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140124&content_id=67073948&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_t503&sid=t503 Gameday recap from Tuesday: http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140415&content_id=72208464&fext=.jsp&vkey=recap&sid=t503 Regardless, it's worth it to point out that on Tuesday April 15, for the first time in history, every player in Major League Baseball wore a number that is not their own as a tribute to Jackie Robinson. Ed Farmer
Jose Abreu is a lunatic. We're not even a month into the season and he already has 9 HR, 3 multi-homer games, and a walk-off Grand Slam against the Rays last night. Anybody who has ever been on a mound to throw a pitch (at any level; Little League - MLB) shits their pants when they hear his name. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2014_04_25_tbamlb_chamlb_1&mode=video
gisco
^I'm sure he scares a lot of pitchers with his .266 batting percentage. lets see how he does after pitchers have seen him a few times.
Jew
His OPS is 5th best in the AL, so he's doing a decent job so far---but I agree with you Bob. As the film begins to buildup, pitchers will figure out his tendencies and pitch away from those.
jray21
Just a heads up that at 3pm Easter Standard Time, MLB.com is giving away 20,000 free Domino's Pizzas because of their DomiNoNo promotion. Every time a pitcher throws a no-hitter, in this case the Dodgers Josh Beckett, Dominos is giving away 20,000 free pizzas. Last year, they were gone within 2 hours. However, I expect them to go much much quicker this time around. You just have to log in to MLB.com to get a code starting after 3pm EST. mlb.mlb.com/sponsors/dominos/dominono/index.jsp

First game back from the DL for Jose Abreu last night- takes Kershaw out of the park. First inning of the very next game (tonight), another projectile launched at people sitting in the LF seats. At the moment, 2 HR/5 RBI since returning. 60 games is more than fair enough in terms of sample size from which conclusions can be drawn. If he falls into a slump at this point, it'll be no different than if a Ryan Braun or Miguel Cabrera fall into a slump*- not that the rest of the league has caught up to him. *I mean this more so in the context of proven competitor rather than directly comparing him to Braun/Cabrera, although anyone paying attention to what he's doing will immediately think of Cabrera. Jew
Granted it could have been because of whatever injury he had, but he was slumping in May before being placed on the DL. He does, however, have a nice swing that really accelerates through contact to generate power. But 60 games still doesn't tell me enough either way to know if it's teams scouting reports/pitchers not being prepared or his pure talent. Or a mix a both. He still strikes out too much and doesn't walk enough, but sure has been crushing the ball when he can make contact. Anyone who thinks of Miguel Cabrera when talking about Jose Abreu at this point is nuts. Perhaps if he keeps improving and hits for this power while batting .300, but until then...not even close. Ed Farmer
^ It would be nuts to say he's the next Cabrera, not disagreeing. In that case, the aforementioned 60 game sample size doesn't even begin to do justice to a comparison. What I meant is that they are both hulking 1B types who don't miss mistakes, but are just as likely to take a bad pitch (to hit) and turn it around. They're very similar players, 1 has been doing it for years, 1 has been doing it for months. Whether or not he'll have long-term success like Cabrera, I don't know. Carlos Quentin made a lot of pitchers (and the Diamondbacks front office) look stupid in 2008, but has been wildly inconsistent since because he's a porcelain doll. Ed Farmer
Jose Abreu had a 21 game hit streak broken last night v. Minnesota. The remarkable thing about that is that only one game (an 0-3 against Felix Hernandez) separated a 19 game hit-streak from this most recent 21 game hit-streak. Meteornotes
Went to the Orioles/Tigers playoff game today. One of the best baseball games I've ever seen, and likely the best sporting event I've ever been to. The crowd was insane. When the O's regained the lead in the 8th inning, the crowd was the loudest thing I've ever heard. I've been going to Orioles games at least ten times a year since 2002. Most of those years they were terrible and rarely won, but we still had fun. It's been even better the last couple of years when they've returned to winning. Hoping they take this series so I can get to an ALCS game next week. dt
