Ace Of Spades
^As an addendum to that, Jersey Shore mostly. Although NJ's always been made fun of for...well, what it is really.
Rollercoaster Rider
I Don't get it either. SNL Makes so many jokes about New Jersey and I Don't get any of them. I've been to many states and have yet to have a "Bad" entire state experience. (There have been some bad parks, but not bad states)
osm
TV, bad drivers, being completely dependent on NY and Philly, smelling bad, lots of factories, endless suburbia, etc. I'm not saying this is true in all cases, but they are stereotypes that have at least an element of truth to them. No offense meant to anyone from NJ. On the bright side, NJ has SFGA and Giants games, so it's not all bad.
coastercrazy 9
See what Jersey Shore has done!?! Just to get things straight that is New York, not Jersey. And North Jersey is New York, South Jersey is Philly. We don't know who we are
VinTheAttendant
I think it has to do with the (stereotypical) attitude of the state as well as various laughable figures within the state. Every time I drive through NJ, it seems like the entire turnpike is under construction. Not to mention, how can you not make fun of New Jersey when it has Camden? Joking aside, I love New Jersey. The beaches are great, Great Adventure is great, and holy crap the gas prices are great. As long as you can take a joke, there should barely be a reason to ask why it's made fun of. Rollercoaster Rider
I think its just state rivalry with New York. Which I Don't get at all. I'm from IL and All the states around my state, guess what? I DON'T HATE THEM. Some are boring to drive through but I Don't hate them. Also the "Garbage" and "Polution" stuff. I Went there in 07 (Atlantic City Region) and This year (Great Adventure, Seaside, Etc.) and saw no garbage and no polution.
XYZ
Yo momma is so dumb she lives in New Jersey. Just kidding, New Jersey is a very nice state with awesome views of New York City, Kingda Ka, bad crime in Camden, home of Jersey Shore, and most of all is the Industrial State. You have to love New Jersey.
BaMiTsPaT
Stereotypes that are years old along with Jersey Shore antics. I've also noticed that many of my friends from New Jersey are in fact arrogant and believe that it is the "best state," and like to belittle any state that isn't New Jersey. Jersey pride and calling it the "Dirty Jerz" makes them happy.
Airtime&Gravity
There are a lot of things, but the stereotype only seems to hold true around NYC, the Jersey Shore, and Philly. I actually thought central and northwestern New Jersey was really nice when I visited in 2007. We avoided Philly as we were going to be going through in rush hour, and just like NYC, northeastern New Jersey is hell. Central New Jersey is really nice though. It's actually fairly forested, and while still fairly urban, feels a world away from NYC.
netdvn
Jersey is actually a nice state. Even the stereotypes are wrong. A good chunk of the state is forested and it has a ton of beautiful areas (even on the Turnpike). Once you get past the huge power plant in Linden, the area becomes more urbanized (which may be where the stereotypes of pollution and a red-headed stepchild to New York comes from). But it's still not that bad (it looks just like any other city in America) since that area has natural marshes that break up the urbanized sections. Hell you can get some of the best views of Manhattan from Jersey. From what I've seen, the area doesn't have as many industrial sites (mostly warehouses and storage facilities) either. New York itself isn't very polluted (in terms of smog) so Jersey doesn't seem to have that issue either. Jersey's also one of the few states where you're not allowed to pump your own gas Atlantic City is scary though. Probably one of the few places where I felt genuinely scared that somebody was gonna mug me. It didn't help that the casinos felt dated and that we parked in front of a seedy motel either. coastercrazy 9
The South jersey pine lands are very beautiful, you don't think your in Jersey. That being said, we all have to laugh at ourselves sometimes.
larrygator
If you live there you should understand why people make fun of Jersey. PSiRockin
Most of the pollution stuff comes from how NJ beaches had syringes on them in the 80s when NY hospitals dumped medical waste into the water. Nowadays, they're fine, but people still make jokes about that (I think It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia did). And the lots of factories is only true if you have only been on the NJ turnpike. The culture kinda jokes are funny, and I feel they're true some days.
