P. 512: Holiday World acquires Santa's Cottages resort

^ Okay, thanks for the info. I've never seen a business/school actually cover these types of drills on social media before. It seems like a really good idea to do that so everyone knows that you're prepared when a emergency happens, which gives them another reason to feel safer at the park when they visit.

^Very cool! I've covered a rescue-squad competition at Kings Dominion a few times, which involved rescue scenarios at various ride locations that required different skills. Quite interesting to watch.

I was keeping up with the #EmergencyDrill on twitter and found it to be really fascinating. I've always been interested in emergency operations anyways. Back in the summer when there were several tornado warnings during park hours it got me to thinking "what if a tornado actually hit the park?" It's good to know the park and surrounding agencies have in place a detailed plan and prepare for it thoroughly.

i just went to Holiday World yesterday and noticed The Legend was down. I went to guest services and they informed me that it would be down the rest of the season and would return "more amazing" next season...not sure what that meant...Or what's wrong with it but thought I'd share the info. It's my first time to Holiday World so I'm kinda bummed about it. Also I noticed there was a large amount of land beside the Hyena Falls and the Thunderbird that has a long spray painted yellow line marked around the whole plot of land...Maybe something new is going there...I may try to get a pic today. My trip report will come later.

My immediate thought goes to what I have been saying they should do for years, which is RMC the Legend. As much as I would like to see them do this to the Legend, I doubt they would do it so soon. However, I will gladly accept if they do

I apologize for the double post. Adding RMC to the Legend would also bring new life to the Halloween section since a new ride hasn't been added there in more than a decade. This would definitely create opportunities. I just wonder if they did this, would they keep Frightful Falls or close it down. If they did, this may be able to open up quite a bit of land for a new expansion to Halloween. I don't know, just my thoughts.

The Legend is not getting RMC'd. I just went back through some posts on the parks FB and seems the park was having some major issues with all the coasters last week. The Legend has closed early the past few seasons to get a start on off-season maintenance. This usually doesn't happen until October so I'm guessing by the time they get whatever is wrong with it fixed, it'll be time for ride to close for the season.

I think the possibility of a full RMC conversion for next year is pretty slim in that I think all of RMC's projects in question have been announced. That being said, I wonder if a complete topper track overhaul could be in the works while keeping the same layout.

Posted

I'm sure it is simply just extensive track work, but nothing to do with RMC. I could see HW utilizing RMC in the future, but I don't see it happening for at least another two seasons. As far as the yellow spray paint by Hyena Falls, I could see another water park addition up there, possibly even for 2016.

I went for Halloween Weekends last year on what was (I think) the next to last weekend, and The Legend was still open and operating fine.

The Legend has been down and was told by a guest relations employee that it would be down the rest of the season and that it would return "more amazing" next year...

My take is he is just putting a positive spin on the situation. It will probably not make sense for him the say that it would be down for the rest of the season and would return "more disappointing" next season.

For some reason, all three of the wood coasters have suffered larger than normal downtime this season. I have no idea why but the Legend and Voyage in particular were sometimes going down for a large portion or all day. I don't ever remember prior seasons being this bad for downtime.

Posted

Well I can dream right? An RMC to the legend would easily be the best thing to ever happen to the park. But I could settle for topper track I like the layout a lot but the jarring is just painful. Any turn makes it feels like it's running square wheels. I guess it's just the laterals grinding down on the ride. Which would make sense why they close early for maintenance.

I hope Legend gets some nice new wood track and new stompers.. a little extra bracing perhaps. Put me in the crowd that would be heartbroken over an "RMC makeover." Maybe RMC will build an awesome ride somewhere else in the park someday. Holiday World's "Middle Child" is my favorite!

An RMC makeover of Legend would be incredible considering its interaction with the forest and the water park. Still, I don't know if Holiday World would ever pursue something like that considering the ride is a bit of a middle-child staple at the park among the other woodies. Sometimes people rank it as better than Voyage due to how it rides (like me on my first-ever visit to the park).

Hopefully they'll find a way to keep it going strong, maybe even if it means replacing some larger chunks of it with new wood.

Personally, I don't understand why a full "RMC makeover" on any coaster would be required. I can understand Topper Track to make the riding experiences more enjoyable and cut down on maintenance. But all three coasters are world-class designs as they currently stand, so a full makeover would seem unnecessary (at least in my mind).

I ***LOVED*** Wicked Cyclone. But the wooden Cyclone was still MUCH better, and more of a real thrill ride. My first thought after Wicked Cyclone was it was more of a family ride (also a good thing!)

I'd like to point out that while I totally respect your opinion, and yes you've justified your opinion (although I disagree), this is not a popular opinion. Most that have ridden an RMC say they are much more extreme than their pre-modified counterparts.

It's totally cool that you have a different opinion and I respect that, but for anyone not as familiar with RMC renovations, just know that this is not a common opinion of these rides.

I will just add that the guest relation person who seemed somewhat knowledgeable about the Legend situation seemed to downplay any notion that the Legend would be changed in any way. She made it sound more like it was being fixed, or like it had major problems. So I doubt that it will see any kind of RMC love. And although I still haven't got my trip report ready, I will say that all their wooden coasters were riding pretty rough this weekend. The only enjoyable seat on the Raven was the front seat and The Voyage was just running super slow. So, I'm just under the impression that their wooden coasters all need some much needed attention this off season.

I will also add that this is the only park I've ever been to that closes their roller coasters down early before the park actual closes. Mammoth closed down an hour early, Wildebeast closed down 45 minutes early. Voyage, Raven and Thunderbird closed down 30 minutes early. The park was very crowded and it just seemed like they just couldn't wait to close down everything early to move people out as quick as possible. I was not a fan of this. I guess I'm just used to Six Flags and Cedar Fair parks letting you ride all the way up to closing. And although I enjoyed the park, it will probably get another huge attraction to get me to drive 4 hours back to Holiday World. Shutting everything down at 6pm is just disappointing.

I was at Holiday World for a little while yesterday, but did not make it up to check out the spray painted line for myself. I have a few ideas of why the line might be there. I think the Rock the World concert was in that area, so the spray paint could be left over from that. Also, I think they were planning to move the children's bumper boats next to Hyena Falls. They had a contest to rename the bumper boats when they took them out of the Christmas section. The winning name was Water Bumpalos. They were supposed to reopen in 2015 as part of Splashin Safari, but they either changed their minds or postponed the project. There was a map on their website for a short time that showed the bumper boats next to Hyena Falls. It was the map that showed the new entrance to Splashin Safari in Thanksgiving at the old Pilgrim's Plunge/Giraffica location. The map showed the pool being filled in, but the station building was still there. I would love for a new ride to go in there, but judging from that map it looks like that building might eventually be to used for more changing rooms and lockers for Splashin Safari. I don't know if the changes that were on that map were just delayed or if they were canceled. I guess we will find out eventually. I can't wait to see the things they have planned for the future. I go to Holiday World at least once a week and I am always looking around to try to get ideas of they might be planning.

I totally understand and agree. May I suggest you let the park know directly, preferably in a polite (snail mail) letter. It's always good to let them know how you feel about their park (in a nice way, of course); the good and the bad! Every little bit of input helps. They really do read it.

Kings Island used to shut down the Beast queue early, many moons ago before Cedar Fair took over.
