Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread

P. 512: Holiday World acquires Santa's Cottages resort

You know, I feel like this project is just becoming more mysterious not less. Yeah it's looking like a B&M but what kind! Is this a launched coaster (a B&M first) or something completely different! All I know is I'm getting excited!

Posted

Thing is, if it's a B&M, I would imagine it's going to be very large if they're already this far into construction. B&Ms usually go up at a very fast rate and HW doesn't even open until May.

I am thoroughly enjoying reading the different speculation in the thread about what this new attraction will be. Seeing footers pop up, and seeing the land they've cleared passing over Voyage, has definitely got me excited to hear what this will be! It seems pretty certain that this will be a coaster, and with any luck it will be steel to complement their three woodies.

It does seem that there are signs that may point to a possible B&M, but I'd still love to see a larger scale coaster here in the states from someone like Mack. Their bigger rides overseas look amazing! We'll all find out in a few short weeks!

I don't mean to sound picky, but I really hope it's not another Invert. Why would we get something another park has near by? I think HW should go somewhere different with this ride

I don't think it's going to be an invert either, but who would complain after the success of Banshee???

Give me the ok and I'll spill it.

I don't want to come off as a back-seat moderator here, but I feel this is a bad time and place to be trying to go behind the park's back and dig up info. We have a representative from the park right here with us, and the park is going well out of its way to create a fun and elaborate teaser campaign for the enjoyment of enthusiasts and park-watchers. We are a mere 24 days from the announcement and if one was to uncover everything now, I think it would just make the community look bad. There's a thin line somewhere between intense research and speculation and just flat-out undermining the park's PR work. I know at some point soon we'll probably figure it out just from the footers and prep work, but that's different in my book than exploiting a legal filing or web slip-up.

I still feel really bad about how the Outlaw Run announcement got botched, even though that was pretty much entirely the park's fault for thinking they could merely not link directly to the announcement page and no one would find it.

You're being a little too uptight. No one is leaking government secrets here... it's a theme park expansion. Part of the excitement is wondering how much we will figure out before the announcement is made. If someone cracks the case, so be it. There will still be speculation about the legitimacy of the leak.

It wont matter what type of roller coaster it is going to be, 50% of the coaster enthusiasts will bitch about it anyways. Excited for the announcement, knowing Holiday World it should be awesome. They have been preparing for this for years and I think will blow everybody away.

HAH! True that. If it's a B&M the Intamin guys will complain that it's not forceful enough. If it's an Intamin, the B&M guys will complain about the down time and capacity issues.

I'm still assuming a launch coaster, but I for one still get excited to see new B&M projects announced. Maybe I'm not spoiled enough with them yet to think they're boring like the west coast people.

You've got to admit that Banshee looks pretty exciting right? The reviews for that one have been good from what I've seen - not every B&M is going to be like Silver Bullet, and they do adjust to what individual parks want just like everyone else. Plus the capacity and reliability are great for an up-and-coming park like HW.

A launched with a pre-show would be even better for the atmosphere and overall quality of the park though, IMO.

I'm so so sorry. I feel awful now. The LAST thing I want to do is do anything to hurt HW. I love that place and its people more than you know. I really hope I didn't do anything to undermine anything and I sincerely apologize. I just get so excited about their announcements... I get wrapped up in it sometimes. I'm so so so sorry if I've spoiled your fun, also Paula - if you see this I give you and all at HW my most sincere and deepest apologies.

Having just rode Banshee yesterday, I would totally be okay with a clone

Do anyone think they could add in a flat ride or two a couple of years after next year? For example, a Disk'O and some flying scooters (could have turkey heads on the fins)?

They already have a flying scooters called Eagle's Flight.

Oh... didn't know that. HW is only 4 hours away so I'll be making my first trip there next year!

No worries - we know everyone's snooping around and sharing ideas. That's part of the fun!

Just a rant here but I always hate how newspapers and local news stations make it out that there is some sort of huge rivalry between HW and KK because they're close to each other.

A rivalry may be a slight exaggeration, but the parks are very competitive. Let us compare the two parks shall we?

Both parks have a kick-butt headlining coaster with plentiful airtime

Both have a mid-sized woodie (HW has two though)

Both have a large, newly expanded water park

Both have the majority of flat rides catering to families

Both are independently owned and operated

Both have the EXACT same priced admission of $40 online $45 at the gate

Both are located within >90 minutes of one another

While none of this points to which park is better (IMO you should visit both regardless), the parks are indeed competing closely in this area's market. It shouldn't be a big deal that news stations are calling a close competition a rivalry.

Edit: Holiday World has a billboard located literally right next to Kentucky Kingdom. Like you can see it clearly from the top of Deep Water Dive! Talk about being competitive.

^I think they can co-exist happily. Just like a bunch of parks in PA

Exactly Competition brings creativity, and creativity brings amazing rides!

I'll say it's a friendly rivalry, but Ed Hart didn't have any kind words to stay about HW when they made an attempt to reopen KK (when Dan Koch was president of the park). Also, I believe in some report I read where he outlined his plan to revitalize the park, he said he expected HW's attendances figures had maxed out and they would start to decline once KK reopened. I also recall reading in that report that he said HW lacked a steel looping coaster and that Kings Island would be their only competition. He called HW's business and marketing plan vulnerable (even though he tried to duplicate it when he owned Magic Springs in Arkansas) and it was a great opportunity to take advantage of them. I don't think he ever accounted HW being able to afford a B&M (if that is indeed what it is) when he made these assumptions. I also don't think he quite gets what HW is about and how their business plan works. I've actually found the report: http://www.scribd.com/doc/110767374/KKRC-ResponseOct2012w

Most of the info is on page 20, if anyone is curious.

Did anybody catch this tweet from the park today?

Just had an "I need to understand the technology" meeting w/ VP James. Our Pilgrims have no idea what they're in for! http://66DaysAtSea.com

Maybe even more confirmation of a launch, but also maybe even more confirmation of a B&M, seeing their launch technology would be brand new to the market?
