Holiday World (HW) Discussion Thread

P. 512: Holiday World acquires Santa's Cottages resort

Recommended Posts

It seams that Holiday World is quickly becoming the park to watch this season. The way things are shaping up and with the way they do business at Holiday World, I think we could easily be seeing one of next years most interesting additions. With all of this land clearing, I don't think that RMC Voyage is happening just yet.

Since Holiday World has had lots of maintenance headaches between Voyage getting rough and PP's entire existence, I can see them putting a priority on reliability. A b&m coaster might seem pretty tempting for the park. Unfortunately, I think this whole situation reeks of wingrider.

I don't mind wing riders, the concept is cool. But you have to have somewhat of a force, somewhat of a layout. Head choppers, good speed, tight fits, a high lift, and a long ride. That would be the perfect wing rider

Granted, you don't have to have all those things the make the ride great, but they certainly make it better.

This is Holiday World we are talking about, not Six Flags or Cedar Fair. This is a family park and not a B&M type park. We should stop speculating on what might happen and wait for actual indicators or announcements. This thread is turning into the Darien Lake thread with all the ridiculous speculation.

Perhaps it's already been mentioned, but wouldn't a Mack coaster be an insanely perfect fit for the park?

A custom layout of their "mega-lite" a la Alpina Blitz or a slightly scaled down custom launcher akin to Blue Fire/Helix (combo lift/mid course launch, anyone?!) would seem to fit the park like a glove. One of these would also align with my guess of capital expenditure for a park Holiday World's size (say $12-18MM).

This may be wishful thinking, but I see Holiday World building an Intamin MegaCoaster similar to Goliath at Walibi more than a B&M wing coaster. Then again, I'm not sure the park would want to build what would essentially be a steel Voyage right next to the real Voyage haha. Still, it would be pretty cool to see a coaster that uses Giraffica's station, crosses over Voyage, and goes back behind Splashin' Safari.

A man can dream.

Maybe a Intamin prefab wooden coaster would be a good fit. Low height requirement, less track wear, and in the lower price range. Heck, just clone El Toro. If you can't beat em, join em

On a more serious note, a world class wooden coaster that will stay smooth and can be built rather quickly doesn't seem to out of the picture. The only strange part would be having a Voyage-esq coaster right next to Voyage.

Intamin Prefabs are insanely expensive coasters. Keep in mind that Voyage was only 8.5 million and that was a HUGE investment for the park. Y'all are dreaming way too big. There is no reason to speculate on absolutely no facts, it will only bring disappointment when the park actually makes an announcement. For all we know, that clearing could just be cutting down dead trees...

There is no reason to speculate on absolutely no facts

Setting aside that this is a roller coaster discussion forum where speculating on new attractions is a fun diversion, we actually have a few facts thus far.

-Holiday World has gone on record various times that there are big plans in store for the next couple years.

-Paula is ramping up the teasing - mentioning that people will not want to miss the Voyage walk back on 5/15 and also implying on another forum that a person deciding on a vacation destination should perhaps consider holding off for a bit. Not to mention the "watch the horizon" stuff related to the removal of Giraffica.

I think it's perfectly logical to assume they are installing a major attraction in the next year or two and a medium sized steel coaster is a good bet given the park's size and current lineup.

It's one thing to speculate on plausible additions, but the types of rides that y'all are suggesting are on par with some things said in the Darien Lake thread. Like really insane stuff.

When's the last time Holiday World made an addition that wasn't truly unique and/or record breaking? I don't think there's anything wrong with speculating big here. Have we all forgotten the "what would make your dream coaster?" surveys at Holiwood Nights 2011? I'm willing to bet they haven't.

As others have said, I think Holiday World takes pride in its reputation as a tremendous family destination while also being a park that can cater to us coaster geeks. I believe they have it in mind to build world-class rides and doubt this will disappoint. It could end up being on a smaller scale than some would like (eg Firechaser Express) but early signs point to something more substantial.

From a business standpoint, the park is consistently topping 1 million in attendance but may view a high-tech steel coaster installation as a necessary measure to take the next step in attendance growth.

^^ Like I said earlier, The Voyage was designed with not only a record breaking mentality, but it also was designed to cater to enthusiasts as well with the amount of airtime and lats the ride has. I think Will used enthusiast input throughout the design process. Hopefully, that's the case for the next coaster here.

And it's truly a stroke of brilliance to take that input seriously. If you're already going to invest X dollars, you might as well make the most of them and deliver a ride experience that will create positive buzz and future marketing opportunities in the form of awards and accolades.

Appeasing us in the niche may seem silly, but if you're aiming to delight the pickiest of the picky you may well strike gold and create something with even better drawing power.

^ Any old-timers here remember our Y2K quest for coaster-enthusiast input? It was long ago ... we ended up with 200 emails and letters (one was 16 pages long and hand-written, as I recall). Will Koch read every last one and discussed with CCI. So if you don't like The Legend, you have only yourselves to blame!
