Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

p. 777: Winterfest starts on November 29!

Recommended Posts

I finally made it to the park today to process my Platinum Pass.

Light crowds today. As I'm going on Sunday with some friends I only rode Dominator, Volcano, and I305. Nice, quick visit although Dominator seems to have gotten a little rougher these days.

The park operations today though were pretty bad, especially on Intimidator and Volcano. Volcano and Intimidator were both down when I went this morning, so I went on The Crypt, Avalanche, Anaconda, and Flight of Fear a few times. Intimidator finally opened, but they made the most asinine decision by only operating one train all day, so lines got pretty backed up on that one. Flight of Fear was a walk-on in the beginning of the day, so I made sure to ride that about four times. Volcano's lines after it opened were approximately two hours (probably because they were only doing one train).

I also think it's incredibly idiotic that Avalanche and Anaconda were running two trains today, while I305 and Volcano were only operating one. Wouldn't it make more sense to operate two trains on roller coasters that are extraordinarily popular and actually have lines?

I probably didn't get to the park until around 1pm. Volcano's line was probably around 30-40 minutes and was running 2 trains. I305's line wasn't too bad by the time I got there even though it was running 1 train. I waited about 15 minutes for the back seat. On lightly crowded days I don't think it's uncommon for 305 to only be running a single train operation.

I left around 2pm after riding Dominator a few times, so I definitely didn't see them put the second Volcano train on, but around 11-12, it was definitely just operating one train. As I said before, I305 and Volcano had some downtime when the park just opened.

Dominator seems to have gotten a little rougher these days.

The back row was fine when I rode it earlier this year, the front however was a different story. As soon as the train hit the loop, my head rattled so bad it was unbearable. A real shame because it's such a fun ride.

I'm heading to the park for my first time Monday, and possibly Sunday evening when I drive in. I read the park guide but does anyone have some additional advice on how to tackle the park? Thanks! And if anyone is going to be there those days, I'd love to get a few rides with some fellow TPRers.

Volcano only runs two trains (there isn't a transfer track to remove a train). The ideal cycle is while one train is running the course, the other train is being loaded. When the first train reaches the first block, you send the second train to launch.

At 305, there is only 1 train on the weekdays because only 1 train is needed. The worst the line on a weekday is at the sign of the queue which is a 20-30 minute wait. Adding in the fact that there is only 2 people on the floor (normally 4), two trains is just really painful for the operators for the minimal gains on the weekday. That said, in the event lines get ridiculous on weekdays, a second train is added when necessary.

Coasting for Kids was a fun event and it made me think about how we could reincorporate a single rider line. You guys were awesome! Coming back from lunch, I think I saw Mr. Alvey, but I wasn't too sure so I didn't say hi.

Volcano first. Chances are, that'll prob be the only time you'll get the ride the coaster, cause even with the new queue, the line can get long. i305 is very efficient, so that won't be a problem any time in the day, even if they're only running 1 train. Do dominator last, so that you can hit it on your way out. You should have time to ride everything. Lines don't get too bad.

Yup. Head straight to volcano and ride it first, unless you want to wait in line for two hours to ride it later :/

i305 line never gets too long because it moves so much faster.

Other tips ... skip hurler and anaconda unless they're walk-ons. people complain about Shockwave, but ride it in the back -- the first hill and loop are awesome. Flying Eagles are more fun than they look. Flight of Fear is easy to miss but it's one of the park's better coasters, it's in the building right next to i305. If possible, get night rides on Grizzly and i305!

From past experiences, yes, run to Volcano at rope drop. Don"t miss i305 for a nite ride , AND IMHO, Grizzly is a great way to end the night. Every time I have been there I have gotten the "last ride" out of the night, BUT, they have always ran it one more time because 1 or 2 people were walking up from the waaayy too long cue line and missed the "last train out" , thus giving an extra bonus ride. And that thing really flies with the dew/moisture settling on the tracks at night. That's when G really shines !

I went up to Kings Dominion for a few hours today. I305 was running insanely well (as it was last week during Coasting for Kids). Of course, I hit Volcano first thing and only had to wait about ten minutes. But when 1:00 pm rolled around, they were using all the switchbacks in the upper queue. (That appeared to be the longest line of the day.)

^I305 just got better and better as the day went on, I think I have a new #1! I got there around 4 and Dominator, Volcano, and I305 were all down. I305 came back up real quick and Dominator opened back up later, Volcano was closed the whole evening. I'll be back tomorrow and hopefully it will be fixed! Great first visit though today!

It's not like volcano to be down for a while. It should be up by tomorrow. And yeah, i305 just seems to get better and better! It's a fantastic experience...glad you guys enjoyed yourselves!
Sorry about the double post, but I heard Volcano is back up and running now from my freinds at the park!

It looks like somebody might be having an identity crisis

Yes it is the same person. I also think behemoth was being sarcastic- pretty sure he knows that. Also not entirely sure why this kid has two active accounts posting back to back in the same thread. Whatever, I've seen stranger.

The 'Coaster Studios' account is not mine. Some idiot decided to impersonate me. I am not him, nor does he represent my youtube channel.

CPSFMMCW I believe you- that kinda sucks. I'm going to ask this guy a question only you would know.

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to be creepy no worries. Just putting on the investigator hat for a moment.

Change your username and photo. You do not own Coaster Studios nor represent my youtube channel. Change it or remove it or I will report you and it will be manually be removed, which could cause you to be banned.
