Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

p. 777: Winterfest starts on November 29!

So WMG at Canada's Wonderland takes up over 23,000 square feet of land, does anyone know how much land the Volcano mountain takes up? If volcano isn't big enough, then they would have to expand the mountain if they wanted to fit a WMG style ride in there.

I personally can't really see a Disk-O at this park, but I could definately see a WMG style attraction next year. The main reason I say that is cause the park has talked about how they have plans to renovate the mountain in the coming years. This would do it, alright! My only thing about that is that KD already has a shooting dark ride, while other parks like CP do not, so I don't think that KD might necessarily be the next park that would get it. I think other parks deserve it more. But don't get me wrong! I would love this at my home park.

CW already had a shooter dark ride as well, so I wouldn't be too surprised if KD gets its own WMG-esque ride.

Neither can I, especially after the addition of Lucy's Tugboat in Planet Snoopy just last year.

As far as 2015 goes, I still believe it's going to be fairly big... this season although they did a ton to the park was technically an "off" year and the 40th Celebration is for 2014-2015 so why not go out with a bang?

Plus, it's been 5 years since Intimidator 305 next season... it was 5 years since Diamondback at KI, 5 years since Intimidator at Carowinds, so why not KD? Especially when competing with BGW who is putting in a coaster next season (although a small, crappy capacity coaster) and got Verbolten 2 seasons after 305 opened.

Personally I'd like to see a launched coaster or a new wooden rollercoaster for the park in the near future. They lost out on XLC and their wooden coasters aren't "top" material even though I love Rebel Yell. Something big to back up I-305 would be great, an I-Speed/Maverick type design from Intamin would be awesome. And of course, any RMC installation would be great. I wouldn't count GCI out either

Not to poo-poo on this too much, but IMHO the *last* thing KD needs is another launched or wooden coaster. They already have Flight of Fear AND Volcano AND Backlot Stunt Coaster (not to mention they used to have XLC), and then for woodies Grizzly AND Hurler AND Rebel Yell.

Is there any other park with 4 launched or 4 wooden coasters?

Kings Dominion needs another A-list attraction to go with i305, but I think there are many other directions they could go first. Which one makes the most sense, I don't know, but I'd rather see them do something else first.

I agree completely. Don't forget that wooden family coaster (can't remember the name at the moment) which would make 4 already. An extreme wooden coaster replacing Hurler/Grizzly/both would be smarter, IMO. SFGam has a bunch of wooden coasters- including the family one, I believe they have 4 now as well.

^ yeah I was thinkin about that. How can SFGAm be calling themselves the wooden coaster capital of the world if technically KD has the same number? And wow I didn't realize that before this year KD was the launched coaster capital AND the wooden coaster capital!

The way I see it, KI got a coaster the year before KD got i305. I305 was added the same year Carowinds got a coaster. So couldn't that mean that potentially we could be seeing KD adding a coaster and Carowinds adding a coaster in the same year?

Whoops...totally forgot about Woodstock Express.

That's my thought... and Carowinds will be getting a giga next year but the question remains as to what KD will be getting? However, I could see the argument that 305 was a larger project with greater impact to the park than the hypers at Wonderland, KI, and Carowinds so maybe KD will have to wait a season or two longer before getting a coaster.

Also remember, ever since 305 Cedar Fair/KD have still been pumping the investments into the park with Snoopy's Starlight Spectacular in 2011 (1 million), Windseeker and Dinosaurs Alive in 2012 (7 million), Planet Snoopy' in 2013 (12 million), 40th Celebration in 2014 (1-2 million), along with replacing tons of asphalt with brick pavers each and every year.

When comparing what KD has gotten since "the big coaster" to the other 3 (Wonderland, KI, Carowinds) we've received more and 305 cost about 2-3 million more than the hypers... yet Wonderland and KI outdo KD in attendance quite a bit and Carowinds has been chosen by Cedar Fair for large investments.

Rebel yell was so rough and jackhammering when I rode it last Thursday. I got tiny pops ejector airtime from the warpy track and the ton of jackhammering. Now my back has been hurting on and off since I went there. I am 22 years old so it seems like it should not affect my back very much. I wish they would topper track rebel yell so that it would be much smoother. The turn out of the station and the rest of the prelift was so warpy I could see the trains swaying and wiggling as we went to the lift.

^Rule #1 when riding Rebel Yell is to stay off the wheel seats. Did you violate rule #1, you naughty person?

But, yep, it gives you a spine adjustment when you sit over a wheel.

I always ride Rebel Yell in the front. The back is just too rough, and not worth it for the airtime. The front is smoother and still provides plenty of airtime.

And as for shockwave, honestly if you know how to ride it properly, then its not that bad.

Nothing about Shockwave is worth the ride.

It's the only roller coaster I've ever been on to leave me bruises and I don't plan on riding it any time soon. I'd pay to see this ride get torn down!

I will say, I've only ridden shockwave in the back row once, and it wasn't as bad as I thought It'd be. I enjoyed the drop and the loop on it. The helix was fine, but I didn't like the bunny hops on it. But then again, even in the front car I'm not a fan of the bunny hops!

Here's the 2015 rumor update from Screamscape.

A Screamscape source contacted us about our concept of adding a Guardian style ride to the Volcano mountain structure. As I feared, they confirmed that there simply is not enough room within the existing structure to perform such a task, as the hidden supports for Volcano: The Blast Coaster cut every-which way through the interior of the mountain structure itself. However, it would be possible to add a new hidden structure to house just such an attraction behind the mountain and simply build up the queue entrance to appear as if the ride lies within the Volcano, instead of behind it.

That said… while I think it is still a solid idea for the future, our source indicated that we would likely see the budget money go to pay for a significant upgrade to the waterpark instead in 2015.

Well 2014 was also rumored for WaterWorks, but then they went the 40th Celebration route and have said that it is a 2 year celebration so I could see money put towards both if they do invest in the water park. I must admit as much as I want a new coaster of some type, WaterWorks is what needs work the most in the park now... once they do that, the whole park will look spectacular. I'd love a retheme - maybe a throwback to the original days, Hurricane Reef (probably have copyright problems) or even Wildwater Kingdom/Soak City (Wildwater Kingdom would go great with the name Kings Dominion).

However, whatever it is I still feel like 2015 will be even better than 2014 has been (which has been awesome) and KD will go out with a bang for the second year of their anniversary.

Also, remember Kings Island got the Soak City revamp/retheme for their 40th Anniversary...

Hey, I just want a new flat ride or two next year. It's a two year 40th anniversary celebration so they could add new rides similar to old ones taken out. I could see Carowinds sending their Scream Weaver (an enterprise) to KD, though I hope they don't because they too have a lack of flat rides.

I've never been to King's Dominion when Waterworks is open, and was wondering what's the best way to do it. Is it more like a few extra attractions to do in addition to the rest of the park, or is it more like something that you would do on its own? In other words, you'd come to the park for King's Dominion or Waterworks, but not both. I was just trying to come up with the best way to do it or to skip it for a day when the park is open longer (it closes at 6 tomorrow). Thank for any help!
