Kings Dominion (KD) Discussion Thread

P. 778: Pantherian project update!

Recommended Posts

Agreed. Granted I've not been to either park since 2011 but after that visit I'd have to rank KD over BGW. Maybe BGW was having a bad day but ops were slower and things just weren't up to snuff compared to KD.

Speaking as someone who lives in Virginia and visits both parks often, this has not been my experience. Every park has its good and bad days, though.

I enjoyed my short visit to KD. We will be heading back either next year or the year after and doing BGW as well. We are looking to stay for probably a week and enjoy the Williamsburg area.

I don't understand all of the hate on this thread... Of course people are annoyed that Kings Dominion hasn't gotten another coaster yet! This is probably the longest KD has ever gone without getting a one! If you don't like this thread then stop reading it because you guys are being more annoying than the fanboys.

^Ah, so we have, at last, reached the "complaining about others who are complaining about complainers" stage.

Let's keep it civil here, folks. No pointless bickering.

Thank you.

Yeah that's probably a good idea... I was just trying to get my point across

Meanwhile, Kings Dominion announced through Twitter that they will be receiving a new sign to replace the current one on the side of I-95. Personally, I think the upgrade is great and I am excited to see it when it is finished!

Hmmmm...

Hmmmm...

Before anyone says anything else, this has nothing to do with the hyper coaster Cedar Fair "owes" Kings Dominion. Nothing.

I mean, the sign was plenty visible from Interstate 95 anyway... Every time I've driven by I've been able to read the screen part with no problems.

But, if it's needed, it's needed I guess.

What people fail to realize is that KD went big with their last coaster and failed. An Intamin giga coaster should not have lines at short as it does.

wat?

I305 is considered one of the best coasters in the world, and easily one of the best gigas.

He's probably talking about the first turn incident. But even so, I do agree with you. It was a major success.

The ride itself is amazing and *enthusiasts* love it. Enthusiasts don't determine whether a ride is successful for a park though. There's a reason that after 18 years, Volcano can easily have a 90 minute wait while I-305 is a two train wait. And very little of that is capacity--I-305 often runs one train. It's all about ROI and evidently it wasn't what Kings Dominion was hoping for it to be.

But regardless the park still doesn't *need* a new coaster. Attendance isn't plummeting.

When I visited KD I was definitely surprised at how Volcano, Backlot Stunt Coaster, Flight of Fear, and Dominator all had longer waits than i305, especially considering i305 was running one train and the rest of the rides were each running at least two. While i305 is by no means a "failure" it certainly isn't as "successful" as other rides in the chain with similar price tags (ie Diamondback, Gatekeeper, Fury, Leviathan, and Intimidator at CW)

It's probably just because people can't handle riding it too many times in a row like they can with other rides but trust me, I live near the park and so many more people starting going to the park when I305 was added.

I've worked at I305 since 2012, and I can count the people that complain about the ride on my fingers. There are even little kids (11-12 yo) who ride it multiple times in a row and come off ecstatic.

We never have lines because we're very efficient at pushing people through, even with 1 train. In training, we were taught several checklists to run through to get max capacity and we're consistently one of the highest capacity ride crew in the park...we even beat Dominator for some odd reason. No one ever knows what Dominator crew is doing

I305 gets around 28-32 trains a hour with one train

Volcano usually sends out 15-18

Flight of Fear 20-22

Dominator 25-30

Backlot at one point did get a record 40 cycles in a hour, but usually expect around 25

I was thinking that perhaps Kings Dominion would decide to give I305 buzz bar restraint to attract more riders/bring in more families.

Oh hell yes please. I accept my adrenaline-fueled trip to the grave with open arms.
