The Cruise Ship and Cruise Line Discussion Thread!

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the help guys, I loved Celebrity so I'm sure I'll love Princess. Plus we're taking my 84 year old Grandma with us, so I'm not sure that this is the cruise to do anything like an Oasis class ship.

I've heard great things about repositioning cruises, I'm hoping to do one within the next couple of years.

Hahaha, whats more funny is that the limit is still quite high. Which means people were ordering more then 15 drinks a day?!1 And there were so many people doing it, they had to limit it! LOL, what a bunch of boozers.

As someone who may or may not have consumed the equivalent of 14 cans of beer at Oktoberfest in a nighy or drank around the world at EPCOT once or twice...it's possible.

There's no way I could recommend doing that for more than 1 night a year though, and yet I am sure there are many people on Carnival ships who will definitely hit their limit daily.

  • 2 weeks later...

Royal Caribbean just released the names of their upcoming 'Project Sunshine' ships.

Quantum of the Seas - 2014

Anthem of the Seas - 2015

These will be a new 'Quantum' Class which also implies they may build more of this type in the future.

Still no information on where they will sail, new features, any features, etc.

In funnier news, some of the Royal Caribbean fan boards were talking about how long it would take for Carnival to try and rip these names off (as they have taken names from Disney, RCCL, and other lines before) and someone suggested they would need a dictionary for these!

I also love the fact that the company isn't trying to beat itself with another larger than life ship. The new ships will have a capacity of 4,100 which is less than the 5,400 passenger Oasis Class Ships.

Bigger isn't always better! It will be fun once again to follow the construction of these ships, it was truly a treat watching the construction and sea trials of Oasis and Allure of the Seas. The power of social media!

It's also less than the Freedom class ships (4.300 passengers), but will be 4,000 more gross tons.

Royal Caribbean has also partnered with Mlife (MGM's players club) to offer benefits to Mlife members. Just for being a regular Mlife member, you'll get the coupon book that is normally for Royal Caribbean gold members (don't usually get that until you're 2nd sailing).

If you're gold Mlife, you get drink vouchers and a comp upcharge dinner. Platinum Mlife get a free cruise!

I love the direction the company I work for is going! I thought this partnership was a brilliant move!

They are handling the situation pretty well.

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH - Update

February 10, 2013 – 7.30PM EST

This morning the cruise ship Carnival Triumph experienced an engine room fire while the vessel was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship’s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room. At this time, the fire is fully extinguished. There were no casualties or injuries to guests or crew. All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified.

The vessel is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power. The ship's technical crew has determined the vessel will need to be towed to port. A tugboat is en route to the ship's location and will tow the vessel to Progreso, Mexico, which is the closest port to the ship’s current location. This will enable us to disembark guests and get them home as quickly as possible. The ship is expected to arrive in Progreso Wednesday afternoon and guests will be flown from there back to the U.S.

There are 3,143 guests and 1,086 crew on board. Guests are being provided with food and refreshments. Another Carnival ship, the Carnival Elation, is currently on scene and transferring additional food and beverage provisions to the Carnival Triumph.

We have contacted the designated emergency contacts for all guests presently on board Carnival Triumph. Concerned family and loved ones of guests and crew may call 888.290.5095 or 305.406.5534.

All guests on the current Carnival Triumph voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage, with the exception of gift shop and casino charges.

The next two voyages of Carnival Triumph, scheduled to depart Monday, February 11 and Saturday, February 16 are being cancelled. Guests scheduled to sail on either of those voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable travel expenses and a 25 percent discount on a future three to five-day cruise. Carnival is in contact with impacted guests to advise them of the situation.

The current Carnival Triumph voyage departed Galveston, Texas on Thursday, February 7 and was scheduled to return on Monday, Feb. 11.

This is seriously getting ridiculous. As well as they may be handling it (sending another Carnival ship to give them more supplies and giving people free booze) not having toilets, showers, or AC for several days while being towed to a craphole port in Mexico is not a good option.

This is the second Carnival ship in two years to have this same issue. And let's not even bring in the parent company and all the issues there in the last two years! Unacceptable.

^Yeah... From the reports I've read it looks like they will be stuck at sea for a total of three days with minimal facilities. If Carnival was an airline, based upon their recent track record, no one would fly them....

Remember the Costa Concordia? It was supposed to be floating upright before the end of 2012... Here is what it looks like today http://www.giglionews.it/2010022440919/webcam/isola-del-giglio/webcam-giglio-porto-panoramica.html

Reading some more now, I think Carnival's really going to be in trouble over this one. There are NUMEROUS reports from the sailings leading up to this one that the ship was suffering engine and propulsion issues that caused it to miss ports, delay into ports, and delay back to home port. It cannot be a coincidence that this was all going on in the weeks leading up to a big fire in the engine room and yet Carnival just kept putting duct tape on the problem and loading more passengers on. Wow.

I don't think you could PAY me to go on a Carnival cruise. I'll stick to RCCL and Celebrity, thanks.

But how much is this going to change the average person's view of Carnival? Will most people who would book on Carnival even hear about this? Yes, it's out on the cruise boards but I think it's a very small percentage of cruisers who actually use the boards and/or do any type of research other than price comparisons. It's unfortunate, but until their bookings really begin to suffer, I don't see them changing their ways.

Perhaps this is all part of some grand Carnival marketing strategy. Yes, these are true "adventures at sea" cruises! Pays yer money! Takes yer chances! Who knows whether you'll make it back alive?

It's the Carnival "YOLO Package"!

It likely won't change a lot of peoples' minds. A lot of people out there just like cheap crap, and don't care about the quality of the product. Anyone with any sense that's ever been on a Carnival cruise will realize it is one of the worst products on Earth, and yet when you tell people this (as many of us did after our Klassy Kruise last year), all sorts of people will suddenly appear to defend the cruise line, mainly because it's cheap. People might see a report like this and think about it for a minute, but then will just book a cruise on this hellhole cruise line because it's a few dollars cheaper than something a lot better.

People are dumb.
