Nickelodeon Universe (MOA) Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

It definitely is going to be a Halfpipe (not a disko). I attended the announcement today and i must say that i'm not really a fan of Nickelodeon, but what they showed us today looked really good. As an employee there, I'm ready for anything other than The Park at MOA.

If it wasn't already, Mall of America is about to become center of the universe. Nickelodeon Universe.

Selecting the name of the soon-to-be reinvented theme park, released to the Pioneer Press on Monday, was no easy task, said Howard Smith, senior vice president of Nickelodeon Recreation.

"It's a big name for a big concept," Smith said.

The new park logo for the former Camp Snoopy will feature an explosion of Nickelodeon characters that are likely to jump out at toddlers and teens: Dora the Explorer, Diego, Avatar, Danny Phantom and SpongeBob.

Changes at the park will go much deeper than the name. Mall of America is investing about $30 million in park improvements including four new rides, healthy food options and a high-tech ticketing system.

Three of the new rides, to be built in the center of the park - it really is being called "center of the universe" - will replace the underused fountain with water canyons. They are:

# An Avatar-themed surf rider that oscillates on a U-shaped track.

# A bouncing spring ride aimed at bigger kids and adults.

# Kiddy bumper cars.

The fourth new ride, a SpongeBob-themed roller coaster, will be in the northwest corner of the park.

Along with the fountain, the mall is eliminating the Mystery Mine simulated ride, which Maureen Bausch, the mall's vice president of business development, called "dated."

Other current rides will remain, although many will be re-themed. The

Ferris wheel, for example, is going to Dora, who will also get her own Dora Plaza with sculptures and seating.

Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and the park's other fast-food counters could be on the chopping block with influence from Nickelodeon , which signed on as the new brand of the theme park in March. Healthier eateries, both existing companies and new concepts, are being evaluated, Smith said.

The park's four toy and souvenir stores also will get a Nick makeover - about 80 percent of the Nickelodeon product coming in will be exclusive to the megamall. And visitors should expect fewer employee-operated ticket booths as the park converts to a more advanced system that allows them to buy all-day passes from kiosks.

Hundreds of names for the new park were considered, Bausch said. Executives dismissed the idea of naming it after SpongeBob or any other character in the Nickelodeon repertoire to keep the appeal broad. "One of our goals is to extend the age and popularity of the park."

Mall of America has hired Toronto-based theme park specialists Forrec Ltd. to help with the redesign.

"There's already a good mix of attractions there," company Vice President David Eagleson said. "A large part of the task is updating the park to reflect the new brand. Camp Snoopy had popular characters, but limited possibilities. Nickelodeon is high energy and constantly evolving."

Construction on the park will begin Aug. 27. Work will be completed in sections so that 80 percent to 90 percent of the park remains accessible at all times. Nickelodeon Universe is scheduled to open in March.

Are Halfpipes any good?

Going off experience from riding the one at Elitch Gardens, they are an ok ride. They are kind of painful on the spins, and I get the same effect on a scrambler type ride.

Since MoA is gettin two coasters in 08, I think this is a good eddition becasue you will have a fun euro fighter to ride, and if its no good, a half pipe to fall back on. In the setting it will be in, It looks like it will be really fun!

I would take a wild guess that the euro fighter will have something to do with spongebob at boating school. I think that would make for a good theme, you take a ride with spongebob and mrs. puff as he fails yet another driver's test.

But that is just me I think it will be cool just to have another eurofighter in the U.S. as they seem to be great rides.

Of all Nickelodeon characters/shows, can someone name one that is better suited for a adult ride than Spongebob.

Didn't think so.

Two words:

Invader Zim

But I think Spongebob works too. If the actually spend some money and theme it, it could be a pretty cool/messed up little ride.

Well keep in mid that this isn't Cedar Point, so just because the coaster is taller than 50 feet, it will not have a 54 inch minimum height requirement.

Have you even been to CP? They definatly do not have very stringent height limits. If you want stringent height limits, come to SFNE, where our wooden coaster and hyper coaster both have 54" height limits

Actually I have been to Cedar Point, but the sarcasm was missed...

I think the half pipe is a disk-o, and while two new coasters would be good, I doubt it will happen. While a half pipe coaster would be cool, you have understand that whoever wrote the article probably considers a disk-o a coaster because it has track, and the ride vehicle travels over it much like a coaster would.

Edit: I know someone posted the half pipe coaster is confirmed, I still have my doubts. I just don't see the new park managers adding two coasters in one season, and while I'm not calling your claim bs, I just have a hard time believing it. I'm not saying it wont happen, I really hope it is true, I just wont believe it until I see photos. Just look at the new B&M invert in Korea, and see how they had a picture of a dive machine with invert cars. Now B&M didn't build a coaster like that, but a new invert was built. You claim to have seen a half pipe, and a spinning ride will be built. However, I just don't know it the ride you saw, and the ride that will be built will be the same. A disk-o sounds much more plausible, and since they are popular now, it seems like the more realistic option.
