I'm happy for Patrick Kane, because of how much he wanted that gold medal. I am also ECSTATIC the Flyers don't get to hoist the Cup. The STANLEY CUP was just won, and yet when I flip over they are showing baseball highlights (Yankees, who else), and talking about the NCAA investigating USC. The Flyers went from the potential game winning goal that a falling Niemi stoped from Carter, to a series ending goal on a tough angle that Leighton should have stopped. Still proud of my Flyers though, tumultuous regular season, basically left for dead against Boston, (sorry Scott!), to playing for the cup. They'll be back, they have a good, young nucleus. They have more of an obligation to the MLB, NCAA, NBA, NFL, and the World Cup. They no longer show games on the network, and have limited rights to the product of hockey. Does it kind of suck that they don't have a lot of hockey segments on SportsCenter? Sure. But you kind of have to understand the reasoning behind it at least. Perhaps in a few years hockey will regain some popularity, and ESPN will sign a contract with the NHL again. However, I have a feeling as long as Bettman is in charge, the NHl will never get out of the Big 4 basement. With that aside, I have to say this series really renewed my enthusiasm for hockey. I am not a Blackhawks fan, and certainly not a Flyers fan, but I was able to put that aside and really get into this series. It was like the Superbowl for me - I just really wanted to see a good game and enjoy it. That I certainly did. I have a lot of respect for hockey players and how hard they play. I think I will probably be going out this summer and buying a Brodeur jersey. I'll try to catch more games next year too. Not to mention, the Blackhawks have a nice young nucleus of players that really isn't talked about too much in comparison to the Capitals and Penguins roster. I thought it was rather poignant. For anyone who's watched the NHL for the last 20 years or so, you know what a complex character J.R. is. What he did last night was prove to myself, and many others, what we pretty much suspected all along...he'll always be a Blackhawk at heart. To anyone ripping him online or anywhere else, you're either too young, or just too immature to understand. He proved last night why NHLers are the best pro athletes around. Period. We've got a Chicago Tribune reporter that got cheap seats for the game last night, and he Tweeted Philly fan interactions with him during the game. I did a little Wiki search on JR this morning, and found this: Jeremy Roenick was known for giving back to the fans. Whether it was signing autographs for fans by the players entrance or who came up to him on the street Roenick always tried to have a good rapport with the fans and reach out to them each day. For Roenick it was an understanding of what it meant to be the fan on the other side. As a child Jeremy attended Hartford Whalers' games; during one visit hockey legend Gordie Howe picked up a pile of snow off the ice and threw it over the glass and on top of Roenick's head, Howe then continued to skate around but looked at Roenick again and winked. Roenick recalled what a lasting effect it had on him, noting "I thought that was the coolest thing that ever happened in my whole life, it took three seconds. It was me, Gordie Howe and no one else...That moment stuck with me for years and years and years. It was little, it was small and it took nothing out of his power or time but it resonated with me my whole life. So, as a player, as I got older, I tried to reach out to fans, reach out to kids whether on the ice or on the street on in a restaurant. I try to do little things where I can make the same impression on a young child that Gordie Howe made on me. That’s a gift that was given to me. And I made sure I did it, every, single day. Without the fans, without their support, the NHL would be nothing, the NFL would be nothing, basketball, baseball, you name it right down the line ... The two or three seconds you give each day to make sure you appreciate the people who appreciate you, goes a long way." When down in the trenches at a Flyers, Phillies or Eagles game, you hear a lot of horrible things. I almost teared up last night when he started to break down. That year they got swept was heart breaking, as we all knew Bill Wirtz was going to break that team up in short order if they didn't win one soon. It was also being overshadowed by Bulls run at their first Championship. I have never cared for hockey, and it's still the low on my "must see" sports, but I do watch this team. This group of guys is unbelievably grounded, and the entire city has taken to them like no other team (other maybe the '85 Bears) in Chicago. Tomorrow's parade and rally are going to be nuts! I will be there...somewhere in the mass crowd! What a great group of guys this team has. If you saw videos and interviews with them throughout the season it is no wonder they could win it all. A great close group of guys that stick together and have fun with one another. The mario kart tourney is awesome! Each week one of the local radio stations talks to Patrick Sharp and its always fun to listen to.
