^ They are definitely playing different this year than last year. I figured they weren't going to make much noise in the playoffs last year because most of their wins all year were high-scoring, where they'd win like 5-4, 6-5, etc. Now that they are playing defense, they might actually have something. Still going to be tough with the way the Flyers and Penguins are playing, though.

In my opinion, this year is "do-or-die" for Washington, because there's a very good chance they'll lose Semin to free agency after this year...not to mention Fleischmann, Laich, Bradley, Alzner, Erskine, and Varlamov are all up as well, with Mike Green being up the year after.

^Semin leads our team in goals and if he hasn't tied with Crosby he's got to be close. That doesn't make me think we'll lose him. If he keeps playing like this he'll get a big contract extension like Backstrom did.

About the playoff issue, the Caps have choked in the playoffs, but it wasn't so much us playing worse as the other team stepping up their game. They do have a better chance in the playoffs this year, as we now have consistent goaltending and a more solid defense. But it's FAR too early to start talking about playoffs, right now I'm just focused on winning these games coming up. And to show that I'm not a completely biased jackass like some Philly fans, I want to say that the Penguins are doing better than I thought they would, especially after the bad start they had. And Philly has really surprised me, they are only one point behind us for the league lead, those two teams are the ones I'm most focused on.

LA is going to be a very serious threat to the Capitals being able to keep Semin.

Yep, they and many other teams. If anything, the fact that he is close to Crosby and Stamkos in goals only makes his departure even more probable. Semin is only making $6m right now, and I'll bet he's going to want at least $7m-$9m come July 1st, and there are PLENTY of teams out there looking for a franchise guy like him that are more than willing to pay him what he wants (LA and Toronto immediately come to mind). If Washington does keep Semin, then they will probably lose a few of the players I mentioned above, and I highly doubt they'll be able to keep Green when he's up in 2 years, as he'll want $6m-$8m (only makes $5m now).

It's all going to depend on the new CBA a couple years from now, though. The only way I see Semin staying at a similar cap hit is with a front-heavy contract.

Washington might end up in a similar situation as Chicago this past off season.

Too many young players with expiring contracts due for big raises. With the salary cap they will need to pick who they keep, and who goes. They might not have enough cash for all of them.

It's only been a few minutes in the Ducks Vs. Kings game, and it's already intense!

All I know is if the Ducks want a chance for the playoffs, they seriously need to wake up and win some games at a good constant rate.

EDIT: well I'm actually suprised the Ducks won. Personally, I feel the tripping call on Doughty was a horrible call. I'll take it, though.

Colorado plays Atlanta tonight, and I think this might be the first time ever that I have that sinking feeling about playing ATL. So tonight is my team against my first roommate's team and friday is my team against my other roommate's team and we're going to it in Raleigh (Hurricanes Vs. Avalanche)!!!!! Hopefully we can wine at least one of these two games.

Colorado trades stay at home D-man Hannan to Washington for forward Fleischmann.

Good move for them, I guess. As I said, with the possibility of Semin not returning next year, it seems as though Washington realizes this might be their best chance at a Cup. I doubt Fleischmann was coming back after the end of the season anyway, so might as well trade him to fill a gap on your team. Washington knows they aren't going to beat Philly, Montreal, and Pittsburgh by outscoring them 6-5, so might as well get a stay at home D-man for yourself.

AFTER BURNS' FUNERAL, HOCKEY ITEMS STOLEN FROM WIDOW'S CAR

MONTREAL -- Pat Burns had barely been laid to rest when thieves smashed into his car and stole some of his family's most cherished possessions.

The hockey coach's widow discovered items including signed hockey jerseys from every NHL team, family photos, and a designer men's watch were missing from the ransacked car.

Even bedsheets from a hospital's palliative-care unit were missing in the theft, committed just hours after Burns' funeral on Monday. He died Nov. 19 after a long battle with cancer.

Police say the thieves knew exactly whose belongings they were stealing.

"They went through his stuff," said Const. Anie Lemieux of the Montreal police, noting Burns' wallet was in the car.

"The person who left with the shirts and everything knows that this is Pat Burns' stuff."

Burns' cousin Robin, who delivered a eulogy at the funeral, called the crime "deplorable."

Robin Burns said the late coach's wife had already had a tough day "then to have personal effects taken out of your car when you're at the post-funeral reception is absolutely deplorable."

"Whoever it is, they must have no conscience," Burns said.

He pleaded with the thieves, if they have "any type of conscience," to drop the items off with a TV or radio station or with anyone who knows Burns -- and no questions will be asked.

"I'd only say to anyone listening, if you think you can sell them or do anything about them, then I think the police and the policemen's brotherhood and friends of Pat might have different ideas."

Burns was an award-winning coach who served behind the bench for the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils.

At his funeral, people remembered the gruff ex-cop as a tough but fair man who cared about his players and knew how to motivate them.

Police have launched a public appeal to the thieves, asking them to leave the stolen items in an agreed-upon spot where they can be recovered.

"Anyone with information or that might be approached by someone wanting to sell these items, it's impossible not to know that these belong to Mr. Pat Burns," Lemieux said, noting she believed some of the items were destined for charity auction.

The crime was committed at an outdoor parking lot between midnight and 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Burns clan and numerous family friends had attended a wake in a downtown bar Monday night, after the funeral.

The stolen items include:

--Thirty jerseys signed by star players from each NHL team.

--Two suitcases containing Burns' clothes, and those of his wife.

--A Movado men's watch.

--Many family photos.

--Bedsheets from the palliative-care unit.

--An iPad.

--Women's jewelry.

I honestly can't fathom how anyone could be so sick to do something like that.

I'll take that, Fleischmann was not performing well. He turned the puck over a lot, he made a lot of mistakes, and he had trouble setting up plays. I hope this means we'll see more of Perrault, that kid was awesome.

They definitely needed a stay at home guy and Hannan fits the bill. If he doesn't work out, he walks at the end of the season anyways.

Sorry for the double post, but this is big news in Toronto right now

Rogers in $1.3B talks to buy majority stake in Leafs empire

It's a long article but the TL:DR version is basically that the Rogers Media corporation, who currently owns the Blue Jays, are in talks to take majority ownership of MLSE, which includes the Leafs, Raptors, Toronto FC, and Marlies (Leafs farm team), from the Ontario Teacher's Pension Plan for a cool $1.3B.

Rogers would essentially own all sports in Toronto, with the exception of the Argos, and could make their sports network number 1 in Canada, taking the place of TSN.

My geography teacher was always torn between rooting for the Canadiens or the Leafs because of this; on one hand, he was a huge fan on Montréal. On the other, if the Leafs keep winning, he gets money (theoretically).

WOOT!! Leafs pull of the comeback late vs the Caps and win in SO!!

I missed it. When it got to 4-1 I switched to Halo Reach. Checked my fantasy team later to see that we came back to win.

Good for the Leafs, kind of good for my fantasy team as well, as I have Semyon Varlamov.

We would have won last night, but one of our defensemen got injured and left, which led to different line combinations, which led to miscommunications, which led to them scoring three goals which our goalie had no chance of stopping. If Schultz hadn't gotten injured we would have won. Not to mention that that move Grabovski (I think) made to score in the shootout was illegall, you cannot stop moving, which he did. Oh well, at least Ovechkin has snapped out of his slump.

Injuries happen, they're professional players that get paid to adjust and deal with adversity. The Penguins have the best record in the league without Jordan Staal, and have been without Malkin the past 2 games (one of which they won 7-2). There's no doubt in my mind that if the Capitals lost two out of their top three players (Ov/Semin/Backstrom) for an extended period, they'd go right down the tubes...fast.

Perhaps getting rid of Fleischmann's grit wasn't such a great move.
