Storm Runner Rollbacks?

Recommended Posts

One thing that is NOT fun happend to me on superman a few weeks after opening, we were going through the pre launch bit, sitting on the launch track, and it started pouring down rain, the op's pressed the E-Stop button, but the train had allready launched, i was in the front seat, and OMG it hurt like Hell! I just wanted a rollback from the rain

There's this coaster called Top Thrill Dragster. I don't know if you've ever heard of it or anything, but it rolls back pretty much every day.

It usually rolls back when they've been testing it for a while and suddenly put a person in the train.

Yes Kingda ka does have a system that weighs the train, but it has rolled back many times.

I use to work at GADV on Nitro and Batman for the 05 season, having had to climb Nitro's lift every morning I saw Ka roll back during test runs.

Ka has a 2 type launch system.

System 1: 1 swift cable pull.

If the train is under weight *operator hits "EX Boost" I believe the button says. and it switches to launch type 2.

4 tugs on the cable at different points on the launch.

Sorry to state for you Kingda Ka fans out there but the train doesn't always hit 128 as its intended. It hits between 122(yes I said 122) and 128 on normal basis. At 122 it still BARELY makes it over the top.

Before moving to SC from NJ, one of my last 5 rides on it I actually got a roll back in the Gak(green) train. Although I have ridden Storm runner maybe 1 or 2 times I have never seen it roll back yet. I also witnessed TTD roll back a few times from my last trip to CP.

from what I hear about Xcelerator, they say it really only roll backs when they first start it in the morning for testing. I imagine that Storm Runner is the same way in that in morning during testing period, it might roll back occassionally, but I'm not quite sure if it roll backs with actual people on it.

From a news segment I saw on the Today show, they were talking about Dragster. Said the trains usually roll back when the track is to cold. Track would be cold in the morning, but after a few test runs, it would be warmed up and ready to go!

Dragster would roll back every single morning I saw the first test launch of the day. Except one. In my three years working at Cedar Point and the numerous tests I saw of TTD, I've seen it clear the top on the first test launch of the day once.

They probably shut TTD down because well, would you like to be hit in the face by rain at 120 mph?
It rolls back because they've stopped it. Rain has nothing to do with it. The bearings cool down, so there's more friction, which causes the train to roll back.

Intamin rocket coasters rolling back is not uncommon. I'm sure Storm Runner has rolled back with a train full of people, even though it's not super tall.

I think out of all the rockets, TTD rolls back the most.

When i went to CP for 2 days last summer i saw it roll bcak 6x in those 2 days.

I've never seen Storm Runner come even CLOSE to a rollback. It always FLIES over the top and everytime I ride it, It produces some extreme ejector air.

for KK... I've seen it come REALLY close to a rollback, but have yet to witness one. As I was leaving the park once, the Green train (Gak?) was constantly barely making it over and going slower and slower as the runs went, so I am guessing it had to have rolled back after i left.

It makes sense that the rockets/stratas roll back early in the morning, or when its cold, etc. Oil thickens as it gets colder, so it's harder to cram through a turbine at a bajillion psi when it's not warmed up.

And, yes, Storm Runner rolls back. Not often, but it does. [i was on it]

My original post is at the top of page 2. Everyone seemed to ignore it.

YES!!! It would be great to relive memories!

That's because it needs the most power out of all of the rockets and the hydraulic system is almost barely capable of giving such power.

Kingda Ka does indeed have a weaker motor because the company (Intamin, duh) had more experience with the technology when it was designed. If you'll notice, Kingda Ka has twice the amount of accumulators as Top Thrill Dragster does and about 10 more hydraulic motors (as far as I can tell. They're hidden behind the origional motors). Kingda Ka also has a longer launch time. The company (again, Intamin, duh) created the ride with a longer launch time so the train was more likely to accelerate to the speed it needed to be. I'm sure if you go out and measure, Kingda Ka's launch track is significantly longer than Top Thrill Dragster's (I would assume about 50 more feet).

That's how Top Thrill Dragster's system is more powerful than any other Rocket coaster.

Superman at Movie World has only ever rolled back during testing when it was meant to. I have had words with people who claim to have been on the ride when it rolled back, but according to the park, this is not true.

Well as park worker

Actually it has rolled back, back in April it was having problems getting over similar to storm runner problems now but was fixed and has run great ever since.

on a side note the superman shop makes so much money its crazy considing you cant take anything in the ride so your bags are with love ones outside or in a park locker, so with the ride does go down or it rains its a really pain.
