Bumpity bump bumping this because there's been at least half a dozen bans over the past few days from people ignoring this rule.

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM. The proper way to deal with spam is to hit the little "spam" button on the offending post, leave a message, and submit it. That's it. Don't reply to it. AT ALL.

Again, I'll copy paste this from earlier...

]DO NOT RESPOND TO SPAM. DON'T MAKE CUTE COMMENTS OR JOKES! IT'S NOT FUNNY AND ONLY MAKES MORE WORK FOR US!

IF YOU SEE SPAM, USE THE "SPAM" BUTTON TOOL AND WE WILL GET TO IT AS SOON AS FEASIBLE!

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM!

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM!

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM!

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM!

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM!

DON'T RESPOND TO SPAM!

And to add to that....

If you do get banned for responding to a SPAM, please don't email me being all obnoxious about why you got banned.

How about READ THE FORUM RULES first!

Thank you!

Oh god I just read this. And I was going to respond to a spam forum earlier, why, I don't know, cause there were nudie pictures and someone else did.

Good thing I didn't...maybe this thread should be sticky'd so more dumbasses like me see it and avoid daily bannation. Cause I didn't even know this rule was in effect.

Maybe somebody can explain. I have often wondered how it is that the unwanted posts like viagra, porn, cialis and all the other none related stuff that gets posted gets there in the first place.

Are these things done by a spam program that finds security flaws in the PHPBB programing that allow them to get access to the site without signing up for a password to log on and post. So in a sense they don't have an email address or password. If it is a security flaw in the PHPBB programing then would an upgrade to a newer version of PHP solve the problem.

Or are these actual people that have so little to do in there lives that they have to screw around with other peoples enjoyment. Is there a person that sits at there computer and goes through the whole process of go to the site, sign up, get a password, come back to the site, log on, post there silly unwanted spam and leave knowing there posts will get deleted and subsequently getting the IP address banned. .

Seems its harder for me to sign up, come back and post then it is for these people to do what they do.

I have often thought that these things are done by people in the coaster enthusiast realm that are treatened by this site because it takes revenue out of other peoples sites. I just don't understand what the reason is for people to put that kind of crap on somebody elses site unless there are other motives to it like discrediting another persons site.

Maybe its just robots doing it or maybe it is that I visit this site often and notice it more on this site then on other websites that use the PHPBB programing. But it just seems to me that there should or could be a better way to solve the problem then to wait until little Jimmy 13 year old reads a post about making a longer um diving board or how to get you fun with an animal.

I guess I just have never understood spam emails and spam posts. I assume that they create a market because they must get some people to buy there product otherwise they wouldn't do it in the first place.

Also do you keep track of the various places that these things come from or do you just simply delete them and hope they don't come back. I guess I just don't understand why people do the things that they do and more importantly why there aren't better security in the PHPBB program. I don't have a lot of knowledge of PHP programing. It just seems that if this is a large problem across all PHP boards that somebody should come up with some type of security to help all users of PHP not just Themeparkreview.

Sorry if this is kind of running on or a bit confusing but I have always been curious about how this kind of spam gets here and how can it be taken care of in a different manner then simply wait tell it shows up and delete it.

It can be spambots, or it can be people. There are companies that pay people to spam message boards.

As long as there is an internet connection somewhere, there will be spam. Everyone with an email address or a message board will have to deal with it. It's annoying, but there's not much you can do about it. We take care of it as quick as we can. Hope that answers your question.

Like Dave said. There are companies out there who pay people to register to forums and spam the boards.

We get hit with it more because, well, the forums are very popular. The spam companies will look at sites like Alexa or Google's page rankings and target those who rank high.

For the most part, when a spam message is posted to TPR, I don't think most of them last more than about 30 minutes at the very most.

I would say 90% of the time, the mods catch them within 5 minutes of being posted.

We have installed all the security measures we possibly can, and I do know that other php based forums also have this problem.

The best thing we can do is monitor the forums on a regular basis and ask our users to report the post if it has not been deleted. At that point we go through the process of deleting the post, deleting the user, and banning the domain and IP address which they came from.

Hope that explains things!

I was just curious about it, I wasnt knocking TPR in anyway so please dont take offense to it. I know its a problem beyond yours or anybodies control and you guys do a great job controling it.

I see this kind of stuff on various PHPBB boards and was looking into a small PHPBB myself which is why I asked about it..

I also see this kindo of stuff on many of the open forums of all kinds of design guess thats part of being on the internet.

I guess unfortunatly I believe people should be respectfull and mind there own buisness but I know that is living in fantasy land.

Anyway like I said I was just curious about the whole thing and I know you guys deal with it so I figured you guys would have some sort of opinion about it.

I guess I never needed a job that bad that I would go around and do the things that these people do not just on TPR but as a whole.

I had the same problem with my site where i had people creating accounts just to post porn links. Then they had the nerve to say I can move it to the appropriate location, which was always the trash. I also then had to block their IP addresses then changed permissions on users so they couldn't post links or pics until they reached a certain post count. Unfortuately it wasn't enough people actually in the forums, just looking at the pages I created, so I eventually locked the forum.

Seems you can't have anything without some idiot ruining it.

The one thing about reporting spam though, why do we have to write something in the comments box? When I come across something that's clearly spam, I'll report it, but it won't let me unless I write something in the box, and I don't really know what I should say. I usually just say "spam". I'm just curious as to why there needs to be a comment box.

^ It's because the report spam button used to be the "report post" button, but then people were abusing it and reporting posts they didn't like. We would get sometimes hundreds of report posts every day.

It's just something we haven't quite changed yet.

^I used to use the function to report spam, if I saw that the thread only had a couple of views (i.e. no one had seen it yet), is that necessary?

Or should we only use it for spam that has added a reply to a thread that is not spam?

Posted

^ It's underlying function is a "report post" button so if you report a response to a normal thread that is spam, it should work.

Remember, that most of the time one of us mods is usually on here so we see spam pretty quickly. But it's always better to report spam, then not say anything at all.

We've had a few in the past couple of days with very graphic pictures. Better to have it reported then it sit.

REPORT, just don't respond!

For some weird reason I tend to be on whenever spam is first posted. I always report it when I see it. You guys do a great job of getting it off quickly. Great job guys and keep up the good work.

You guys do a great job of getting it off quickly.

Well that's what you're supposed to do when you see porn spam on the forum.

That made my day a lot better.

^ That's great. Now why don't you use the "report Spam" button like you are supposd to instead of posting something vague in this thread?

Posted

^ One, you didn't report it. There's only one reported post for today, and it's not from you.

Two, I think your thread was locked or possibly deleted due to it being pointless.

Let's get with the program.
