  1. Well, this is a very timely topic, as we are going back on the South Beach diet, starting tomorrow. We did it 4.5 years ago, during my last term of nursing school. It worked very well for us - I lost 10 pounds and Todd lost 26 pounds, in 6 weeks, but then he got laid off, I had to go back to work full time for the last month and a half of school, and it all went to hell. I am very frustrated, because I have not lost a single pound, since I started running, last September. I went from no exercise, to running/working out 1 hour/day, 4-5 days/week, without changing my diet at all, and I haven't lost any weight. I don't know how that is possible. And it's not because I'm building muscle, because my flab layer is unchanged. I'm blaming sluggish middle-aged metabolism. So, this time, I want to lose 10 pounds, again, and Todd wants to lose 32 pounds (I posted 40, in the running thread, but he corrected me. ) Elissa - you are completely right about different methods working for different people. And, as I am unfortunately learning, what works at one stage of life does not necessarily work, as you get older.
  2. I'm doing two 5-6 mile runs per week, plus one long run (9 miles, last week,) or 5-6 mile speed workout (alternate weeks.) I'm also doing an aerobic cross-training workout with weights, twice a week, in between runs. With the high heat and humidity, I've been taking it pretty slow, and only going out before sunrise/after sunset. I work 12.5 hour shifts, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, so I can't do anything on Saturdays and Sundays. I have 2 half-marathons coming up on October 2nd (Jacksonville Marine Corps 1/2,) and Thanksgiving day (Outback Distance Classic,) and 2 full marathons on December 19th (Jacksonville Bank Marathon,) and February 13th (26.2 with Donna - National Breast Cancer Marathon.) I'm fighting the urge to do WDW, but it's only 3 weeks after the Jax Bank, and 4 weeks before the 26.2 with Donna. I think that would be overdoing it! eta - I log my workouts on dailymile.com, if anyone else is on there. I have the same username. Also, we're starting South Beach diet, again, after my birthday tomorrow! My weight has stayed exactly the same, since I started running last September. Very frustrating. I just want to lose 10 pounds, so it seems that hardcore dieting will be required. My husband wants to lose 40 or so pounds, so it will probably take us the same amount of time.
  3. As a mom, I have to say this is one of the greatest things, ever! I know how much that means to Kristen and Elissa (and I'm sure Robb appreciates it, too! ) Well done, Wes!
  4. Same as Jon. I'm blind as a bat without my glasses - I'd be screwed, without them. I don't like wearing my contacts, but I usually wear them to parks, so that I can see while on rides.
  5. Lou- I don't know how I missed this, five years ago, but I LOVE that you listed Drop Dead Fred! I love that movie! (I know several people in it, as it was filmed in Minneapolis while I was living there, working in theatre. My ex-boyfriend is in several scenes!)
  6. Must have a play area with monkey bars over a malaria creek!
  7. Probably not the kind of answer you are looking for, but for me, it has always been Sophie's Choice. I only saw it once, when I was in high school, but the sound of her scream still haunts me, especially now that I have children.
  8. I don't understand what your point is, either. Are you saying that Sea World is complicit in the dolphin slaughter? If yes, then why not just skip your visit, if it bothers you? If no, then why would it bother you to go there? What I got from your post is that a.) you're going to Sea World, b.) you watched a film about dolphin slaughtering, and c.) it bothers you, but I don't see the connection between a and b, that leads to c.
  9. As a parent of 3 young kids, I totally agree with your comments about the kiddie area. I hate kiddie areas! Yes, please, make me stand around, bored out of my mind, while the kids go on rides that I am not allowed to go on (nor have any desire to!) The best family park scenario has lots of rides that the whole family can enjoy, together, with maybe a few kiddie rides sprinkled throughout, preferably next to the thrill rides with height restrictions, so the parents can take turns, and the kids don't get antsy, waiting. Is anybody listening? Is this thing on?
  10. I've never given a crap about the Emmy's, but I'm SO happy for Chris Colfer and Mike O'Malley!!!!!!!
  11. I am seriously creeped out by that cuckoo clock.
  12. Always love your trip reports, Divv! And many thanks to Piers, for the death of the TPMop!
  13. Well, my advice would be to go to Typhoon Lagoon and/or Blizzard Beach! If you are fortunate enough to get an afternoon thunderstorm, definitely find cover and wait it out, because the park will be essentially empty, when it's over, for the rest of the day!
  14. Anyone else having trouble with the disc? I can't seem to get mine to open. Tried both my desktop and my laptop. When I pull up the drive, it has the title, but says there is no content.
  15. Capybara porn! Awesome! Chuck - that's a great memory!
  16. Best caption of the year! You never let me down, my friend!
  17. Oh wow - you are really dredging up my memory banks! I haven't been to Ocean Beach or Canobie in at least 30 years! (ETA - I think those water slides of death have been at Ocean Beach longer than that! )
  18. ^Agreed! Loved it! I was thrilled with To Sir With Love and the Bruddah Iz version of Over the Rainbow!
  19. Damn you all! You're going to talk me into registering!
  20. Are you going to run the marathon for your birthday, Robb? Team TPR!
  21. I just looked up the 2010 results for the WDW Marathon, and there were just under 17,000 finishers. Do they cap registrations at 20,000? I couldn't find that info (although I didn't look too hard. ) It makes sense, that the parks would be on the empty side for race weekend. I would expect that a lot of people would try to avoid that weekend, due to the road closures, traffic issues, and booked hotels. I never really thought of it, from that perspective.
  22. Took Scott's lead, and posted on facebook, so all my Disney message board friends and all my nurse friends will see it and vote, too!
  23. I'll be running my first 26.2 (Jax Bank) in December, so I don't feel I'll be ready for the Goofy Challenge in 2011. I'm planning on running 1/2 marathons in October and November, and full marathons in December and February, so the temptation to run one of the WDW races in January is huge. I go back and forth on this, all the time. I still may cave in and register. One OT shift would pay for the whole weekend! Do you feel the WDW Marathon and/or 1/2 is getting uncontrollably big? I'm very intimidated by the huge races.
  24. I'm not exactly local to WDW (175 miles away,) but I know a lot of people around here who just run the WDW Marathon and then come home. I stayed off-site for the Princess 1/2, but I think I would probably stay onsite, if I did the Marathon Weekend races. I've heard a lot of nightmares about missing the start of the race, after sitting in traffic for 90 minutes. For me, walking around the parks with my medal was the best part of running at WDW! I had friends who came from TX and CO, and they wore their medals to the parks for the next few days. Ideally, I'd love to try the Goofy in 2012, but we may actually be making a temporary move to SoCal, the end of 2011, so I guess I'll have to wait a few years.
