Do You Bother With Water Parks?
Password121 replied to Golddisk's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
I never went out of my way to visit one until last summer at SFA's Hurricane Harbor which is a rare case because the water park is actaully more highly regarded than the dry side considering SFA really lacks in terms of coasters. Generally though I wouldn't make time for it unless the dry side sucks or the water park is exceptional. I'm considering trying Kings Dominion's Soak City this summer for a few hours to do along with half a day on the dry side, but I wouldn't make a full day of it or pay admission for it if I didn't have a season pass. I'll also agree with prozach on this one outside of these cases, I'm 18 and an athlete and I still feel a little uncomfortable standing shirtless all day with a bunch of people I don't know. Sunscreen's a pain too. -

^Why don't you just wait until they announce an official opening date before you book anything and risk it still being closed? If it were myself it would save me a lot of stress and potentially a sad trip. That's just me though. -

How much I'm smiling when I hit the brake run. And that's what makes this hobby amazing. -

^Not what I said at all but thanks for the kind words. I respect a justified opinion, and I'd love to hear some justification. We all have some unpopular opinions, myself included. -
Carowinds Discussion Thread

You really feel the park added NOTHING this year?!?!?! If all you went to Carowinds for was for thunder road then there was the problem right there. But its nice to know that food would bring you back. Not Fury 325, not the water park expansion . . . but food. You are taking my statement out of context. I said they didn't add anything this year in terms of what I go to the park for so for me it's just a downgrade from last year and I will probably wait until they add the new flats to go back. I'm completely aware of the aggressive expansion investments Cedar Fair is putting into the park. I understand everyone has different opinions and I respect that. We all like different things etc etc... but lol what? Nobody in their right mind can say that a mediocre-at-best wood coaster (haven't ridden but Rebel Yell isn't good and supposedly Thunder Road was worse) is better than Fury. Hate B&M all you want but I don't understand this coming from someone on a coaster enthusiast forum that doesn't have some serious sentimental connection that I don't know about (and I'd love for you to explain this to me). Or was it the mini golf? It's losing the mini golf, isn't it... -

^Kings Dominion did the same thing with Hurler. Check the calendar bud. -
Track Spottings!
Password121 replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
The spine on that track is really thick and with the only pieces shown being fairly straight I'd rule out an invert. I don't usually get involved in this speculation but I'd say either a hyper/giga coaster, dive coaster, or something else above the track. -

Please. Do you really think such a muted color would go to a CF park? Isn't that unpainted track? -

Wasn't CGA mentioned as a third growth park after Carowinds and Valleyfair? Carowinds has completed the bulk of their expansion and CGA just spilled the beans on an absolutely monstrous long term expansion. Just because the growth isn't all at once/immediate like Carowinds doesn't mean it isn't happening. I think 2015 was year one and there are a few years left of $10+ million investments. -
Most Overrated coaster?
Password121 replied to BlackWidow's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
^Thanks Boldikus. I think Phantom is probably the biggest selling point for me on stopping at Kennywood, other than the park itself being so unique and fun even without that coaster. The coaster looks like there's really nothing else like it out there, and I couldn't be more excited about it, especially with the tickets sitting in my desk at arm's reach as we speak. Your awesome TR from last summer definitely made me want to visit (giving up riding my first RMC for this--that says a lot, lol). I'll be sure to get my own TR up as kind of an homage to yours -
Since it doesn't have a transfer track they remove that piece to remove and add the train. Ah, same reason as Joker, which I asked about last week when I noticed that piece missing last week. Should have known that. Thanks for the response. It actually does have a transfer track though, but I can't really say much because I don't know about how they install on those coasters ...No it doesn't There's not even a final brake zone. There's literally nowhere to park a train to take it off. There's only one train so it doesn't necessarily need one anyways.

Most Overrated coaster?

I'm a huge fan of both Millennium Force and I-305. Initially I was a little underwhelmed by I-305 (as Prozach mentioned it runs one train fairly often and the location sucks. I don't hate the theming but it's not a strong point for me. Recently though after riding I-305 a lot more and having season passes this year I've come to appreciate it a hell of a lot more. I still grey out every single ride, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I sit in row 16 every chance I can get and when it's running well the airtime is really really strong. No, the location isn't good, but I try to take the ride for what it is, and it helps more than a little when you rarely have to wait more than 20 minutes. The directional changes get me every time--I actually try to lean away just slightly to amplify that feeling since headbanging is a non-issue. When you focus entirely on the individual elements of the ride and not everything else that's minor nitpicks in relation to the ride as a whole, I-305 is almost as good as it gets and I always come off thinking "that's why I invest so much into this dumb hobby." As for Millennium Force, it's almost the opposite reasoning. Each individual element (other than maybe the first drop) isn't incredible, but the entire package is what coaster riding should be about. Plain and simple, nothing over the top, just a lot of speed, smoothness, some floater airtime thrown in, and a great sense of travel during the ride. It's a ride you can just kick back, throw your hands up and laugh. It makes me feel like I'm eight years old again. Night rides are where I really appreciate the coaster to put it in my top five though. That drop at night in the back seat... There's just a lot of really special memories I have riding MF at night. Maybe that special "feeling" I get comes from anticipation, since planning trips to that park aren't a quick deal for me, but the ride just feels like it encapsulates everything I love about coasters and takes all the worries away, for at least a couple minutes. I probably just lost all of my cool points at the end there but there's something special about Millennium Force (for me, anyhow). -

"Airtime" hill. The Kingda Ka Nat Geo documentary is actually a pretty interesting watch. It discusses the options they looked at to differentiate it from Dragster. Most notably, they wanted two airtime hills but couldn't get it to happen.
