2005 Ride Accident Review
dougr replied to benzo41190's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Kid fell out of a Zipper at the CNE. Rear-ender at California Screamin'-I think that was 2004, but the ride didn't reopen til 2005. (Tuesday, August 2, 2005) - At the Mississippi Valley Fair in Davenport, Iowa, a 31-year-old mentally disabled man panicked when his seat came to a stop at the top of a 50-foot Ferris wheel. He slid underneath his seat's lap bar in an apparent attempt to either jump from the ride or climb down to the ground. The man's caregiver, who was seated next to him, grabbed his arm and tried to pull him back into the seat, but lost her grip. The man then fell about 15 feet to the ride's hub. One carnival worker, who had climbed to the top of the ride in a rush to rescue the man, was able to slow the man's fall by reaching out and grabbing him. Another worker, who also rushed to climb the wheel, was able to grab the man near the wheel's hub and hold onto him. Workers then manually moved the ride until workers could safely bring the man to the ground. The man suffered only minor injuries. The workers are employed by Evans United Carnival Shows. Wow, I like those carnies -

A Bizarre Coaster Fact
dougr replied to pagemaster_b's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
it does make a coaster more popular.. years ago a stand up coaster here at Six Flags St. Louis called the Rail Blazer, ejected a rider and that rider got killed, for the short time afterwards when the ride re-opened, it was super popular! everyone had to ride the coaster that killed someone.. its scary how people think.. My wife and I rode the Mindbender at West Edmonton Mall after it had killed someone. Here's a closeup of the wheels, check out http://schwarzkopf.coaster.net/ESmindbender-edmontonHF.htm -

What would rides be like on the moon?
dougr replied to Thrillrider15's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Actually, Robert A Heinlein has a cool story about the Moon in "The Menace From Earth". The premise is that a large dome is built on the moon and that the gravity of the moon is low enough coupled with a higher pressure dome and some cutting edge engineering, that humans are able to fly with space-age designed wings...That man was brilliant... Mmm... -
Lodging for Disneyland Resort Trip
dougr replied to kat11joe's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Red Roof Inn. HBO plus cable, free local phone calls, and when we stayed there, the LA Times was delivered to our door. Plus they are very reasonable and the Disneyland Shuttle stops there-$3 each for all day (2004). http://maps.google.com/maps?q=from%3A+100+Disney+Way,+Anaheim,+CA+92802+to%3A+disneyland&t=h&f=d&hl=en -

NEWS: Mark Shapiro Named CEO of Six Flags
dougr replied to GAcoaster's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
There's a saying in Hollywood- "Don't f**k with the Weinsteins". Michael Eisner found this out when he tried to stop Miramax from releasing Farenheit 9/11. The Weinsteins ended up buying back the picture for production cost. Buying back your movie-20 million dollars. Getting the best of Michael Eisner- priceless. -

Best coaster ride when raining
dougr replied to verticalzero's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
when you go on rides like TTD of S:TE, rain drops feel like rocks! I had a similar experience on the Corkscrew at the PNE. We were loading and a shower was starting. They quickly dispatched out. Ouch! Brrrrr! Even at 55 mph, the raindrops feel like hail pellets and it takes about 90 seconds to soak through and go from warm to freezing cold. -

Having riden only on the Oaks Park (and loved them), we have to check out the Seaside place. -
Superman update Amazing photos.

Yes, I think it's an old British tradition that the former Empire still follows. We don't make such a big deal about Thanksgiving in Canada, in fact it occurs on Columbus Day, but we DO take two days off for Christmas and Boxing Day! Besides, Boxing Day sale sounds better than Day after Christmas sale. -
Best and Lamest Coaster "Ending"

Once you realize you're not going to die on the top hat, the rest of the ride does seem a little lame by comparison. -

It's probably the data they had from TerraServer-you could choose from aerial photo, satellite photo or topo map. Only some places had color aerial photo. They had an ancient picture of SFMM in black and white, the one on Google Earth was much better. However, the picture of Disneyland is exactly the same as Google's. In fact, it was taken the last day my family was at Disneyland. Judging by the time of day, we're probably at Pirates or over at DCA watching "It's tough to be a Bug". As a Linux user, I clicked on your link-it starts to work, then not- why am I NOT surprised? UPDATE: Working now - OOPs!

Sounds like the film business is learning-apparently if you go see Chicken Little in 3-D, they let you keep the glasses. Wait a minute-when do you EVER NEED 3-D glasses except in a theater that lends you a pair? Souvenir hunters make no sense sometimes. I'm thinking this could be a reaction to a society that has people everywhere and you have to be very self-controlled. Bodily functions and basic rudeness appear to have been honed to a science. I'm sure the culture will improve with more contact with the outside world.

Twister II's California Trip Review!
dougr replied to Twister II's topic in Photo Trip Report Archive
Ah, Joe Cool's GR82SKATE. My daughter's (then 9) FAVORITE at Knott's. Like being in a really slow traffic accident (Ouch). Looks like X-Scream at Stratosphere is a similar idea....1000 FEET UP. I agree with Elissa, at least about X-Scream. Be cool like Joe, man. -
Yeah, he's creepy. I appreciate him because I don't see him everywhere, but I can see how he could get on your nerves!

101 things that the Mozilla browser can do that IE cannot http://www.xulplanet.com/ndeakin/arts/reasons.html 8)

For one thing, Homeland Security advises against using IE: Use a different web browser There are a number of significant vulnerabilities in technologies related to the IE domain/zone security model, trust in and access to the local file system (Local Machine Zone), the Dynamic HTML (DHTML) document object model (in particular, proprietary DHTML features), the HTML Help system, MIME type determination, the graphical user interface (GUI), and ActiveX. These technologies are implemented as operating system components that are used by IE and many other programs to provide web browser functionality. These components are integrated into Windows to such an extent that vulnerabilities in IE frequently provide an attacker significant access to the operating system. It is possible to reduce exposure to these vulnerabilities by using a different web browser, especially when viewing untrusted HTML documents (e.g., web sites, HTML email messages). Such a decision may, however, reduce the functionality of sites that require IE-specific features such as proprietary DHTML, VBScript, and ActiveX. Note that using a different web browser will not remove IE from a Windows system, and other programs may invoke IE, the WebBrowser ActiveX control (WebOC), or the HTML rendering engine (MSHTML)." http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/713878

The way the folks at Mozilla look at it, design the site to be W3 compliant, then any problems with IE are Micro$oft's problems!
