Carowinds Discussion Thread
coasterbill replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Sometimes I think I must be crazy because I love Flying Dutchman's. I can't get enough of them... I don't find them rough in the slightest and I love how forceful they are. -
This might apply to me soon, too! I'm considering going to Great Adventure on Friday, May 15th. I've never visited before and I'm unfamiliar with the park and its dynamics. My main questions are: What day is the best day to visit? (The earlier discussion seems to answer this, though any further elaboration would certainly be helpful) A Friday should be a great day to visit but you never know what groups will be in the park at what time so it's hard to say. Is one day enough to get all the credits? (I know it's unlikely, but I'm not sure how bad lines will be and how long it can take to do everything) You should be able to ride everything in a day but budget for a Fastlane just incase the park is flooded with school groups. What ride(s) would you recommend running to first? Go to Kingda Ka immediately upon opening because the capacity is terrible thanks to Zumanjaro, the second row is always the shortest wait but the first row is the best by a mile. What hotel(s) is/are the best to stay at in the area? What hotels? Are the restaurants in the park worth eating at? No Second row or second-to-last row on El Toro? The second to last row is the best row on the train. It's really smooth and the airtime on the first drop and the Rolling Thunder hill is ridiculous. Have a great time!

Adventureland Long Island!

This looks like a lot of fun. I'm not sure if it looks like enough fun to justify sitting in Long Island traffic though. I'm still debating that... -

^ Who... knows? ...Maybe... or... maybe... they... just... decided... it wasn't that important and just wanted a fun graphic to sell gold passes and didn't care how accurate the images actually.... were. -
I'd rather the park build nothing and focus on general improvements. They have a killer coaster collection, aesthetically though the park looks run down in areas. I'd rather they fix things like Nitro always having one train that delivers sub-par rides, the lights on the Ferris wheel, the fact that Nitro's queue is hideous, Golden Kingdom still having no lights, Six Flags TV's appearing at random and nowhere to be seen in the Zumanjaro, Kingda Ka or Nitro lines and a few rides in desperate need of paint. El Toro could use a few sections of track in the turnaround too so it's just as smooth in the wheel seats as it is in the non wheel seats. It's not rough but I'd like them to be proactive. I'd rather see them take a year off from new additions and focus on things like that that are pretty inexpensive. They don't get any ROI from it but that doesn't stop parks like Dorney from investing the time and money required to make sure everything in the park looks pristine all the time. I don't expect Disney quality, just Dorney quality... I think that should be attainable.

Mobile Friendly TPR
coasterbill replied to robbalvey's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
It looks great to me! This new algorithm is ridiculous. Your site always looked fine on a mobile device and with mobile devices improving to the point where websites can display on them just as well as they can on a desktop it makes no sense that Google has all of a sudden decided that this is a priority. I love the new mobile site but I'm sorry you had to build it. -
Cedar Point (CP) Discussion Thread

I agree that it's a ridiculous way to ride any coaster, but I still suggest doing it because it works. Maybe I'm more generous than most when labeling a coaster "decent" instead of writing it off as a bad ride. You bring up a fair point. -
Best Family Coaster
coasterbill replied to Randomman295's topic in Theme Parks, Roller Coasters, & Donkeys!
Wodden Warrior for me, but if we have to go 40 inches tall or less I'd say Firechaser Express or Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. ^ Calling Phoenix a family coaster is really a stretch in my opinion. -

I agree with all of those. Raptor and Gatekeeper should only be ridden in the morning if the forecast calls for wind and you see them running when you get to the park as they're the first 2 coasters to close when it's windy. You can actually get on both rides with short waits (especially Raptor) during Early Entry but your time would be better spent at Maverick or Millennium Force because Raptor and Gatekeeper's lines get really short later on. -

I honestly don't think Cedar Point has a bad coaster thanks to Mantis becoming Rougarou. Corkscrew is the closest thing to being a bad coaster and even that isn't terrible. Mean Streak is decent but ride in the first row of any car and lean forward a little or it's ridiculously rough. -

The second one. They set up a barrier kind of near the Sky Ride station, that way there's no backup at the turnstiles. -
If this ride is running like it was in 2012 then that's incredibly exciting news. They would have an awesome 1-2-3 punch with Bizarro, a smooth Goliath and Wicked Cyclone and some really nice second tier coasters with Batman, Thunderbolt and Pandemonium. If Goliath is smooth again and Wicked Cyclone is smooth again I, might actually have to stop bashing this place so much (well... assuming they remove those dumb Skyway towers).

We were in Pennsylavnia this weekend for a wedding so yesterday we made the last minute decision to stop by Dorney and ended up spending most of the day (noon to close). I like this park a lot, in true Cedar Fair fashion everything is always in pristine shape and the rides always run at max capacity even with small crowds. In true Dorney fashion it wasn't uncommon to see trains on Hydra and Talon with only one row filled, though generally they were able to do a little better than that. The only big changes from last year were the addition of Cedar Creek Flyers which were fun but we weren't able to snap them nor did we see anyone snap them and the new BBQ place by Dominator which is delicious. Aside from Chickie and Pete's the food at Dorney has always been atrocious so it's nice to see that they finally have another quality food place. Since it was opening weekend they had some issues with breakdowns but that's to be expected. By about 7:00 Stinger, Posessed and Revolution were down for the day. Posessed was having issues all day stopping out by the front spike and I guess they finally gave up (we managed to get a ride in though). Thunder Creek Mountain had 2 logs collide in the block on top of the ride (by Hydra's exit) and they had to walk people off the ride so it was down and Demon Drop actually had 2 cars bump in the station but it did re-open later in the day. They bumped lightly but even the ride ops seemed really suprised when it happened, all running over to make sure everyone was okay. They obviously were since it couldn't have been more than a 2 mph collision but it still made a heck of a noise. We got to ride all of the major rides except Thunderhawk and Stinger because they're terrible. Meteor isn't quite ready to open for the season yet which is a shame but everything else was up and running. Everything was running about the same as last year, Steel Force is a great ride in the front seat, Talon is great everywhere and Hydra is always a fun ride. Demon Drop is still amazing and for some reason Thunder Creek Mountain continues to be my favorite ride in the park... don't judge me. lol Overall we had an awesome time at Dorney, we'll definitely be back later in the season.
