I can't help but wonder that the experience on this ride really needs to be done in person, because even after all the videos I've seen, the ride seems more like a lot of slow crawl through the very detailed animatronic scenes for a good length of time, with only about 20 seconds of speed and thrills. While I do think the theming on this ride and in the entire park is fantastic, it just seems like there should be more to this ride.

Right. Which is pretty much what Test Track is also and that seems to still be insanely popular after 20 years...

I get what you're saying though. If you're going into Journey thinking it's going to be an OMFG THRILL RIDE, then your expectations are set incorrectly, but it is by far the most detailed, impressive themed ride that Disney has ever made, with an awesome thrill at the end.

It's just also "very Japanese" and I know that's hard to translate in video form. But every bit of the ride works on crazy levels.

I agree. Actually, in some ways, Test Track is more thrilling because it has more abrupt movements and action during its "slow" periods before the acceleration, but somehow Journey just has a very magical, bizarre, "other worldly" feel that works well. The entire context of the ride, including its amazing outdoor and indoor theming, make it totally unique.

That said, it didn't quite live up to my expectations -- but that's MY fault, not the ride's fault (I spent too many years obsessing about the ride - nothing could have lived up to my ridiculous internal hype).

Journey is not something you go for when you're looking for extreme thrill. The final drop has some floater air but that's pretty much it. Journey is all about the huge amount of details they put into it. I do think the ride is a little bit short but it still blew me away and became my NO.1 ride (Sorry Outlaw Run).

I think you're confusing Journey with White Cyclone, haha.

But I don't understand the difference!

Does anybody? And does anybody really know what time it is? Does anybody really care?

Getting back to Journey to the Center of the Earth, I think it's one of Disney's greatest creations--perfect dark ride with a few thrills thrown in. Plus, it has Lava Monster.

I forgot to post that since I did the Nasu Highland update, I posted the video from their SLC. As you can see form the video, this version is...um.... "not good." But it made for some funny commentary at least!

Next Stop! Nagashima Spaland! I will warn you that there are a lot of roller coaster and ride pics in this update because Nagashima is one of those parks that likes us a lot and allows us to film everything, so we filmed a LOT of stuff!

Overall, I really like this park a lot. Many people consider it the "Cedar Point of Japan" and a few years ago that might have been more true than it is today, but the similarities are still there. The park is kind of out on the water, if you look at the line-up of coasters & rides from both parks, you can draw more than a few coincidental similarities, etc.

It also has to do with the fact that the park has a lot of coasters. Twelve at the moment, which is quite a few for a Japanese park! Compared to the other big "coaster park" in Japan, Fuji-Q, Nagashima wins when it comes to quality of staff, efficiency, etc. It's a coin toss for me as far as rides go. But between the two, I far prefer Nagashima.

Anyway, on to some photos and I'll add more videos into this report as we get them posted on YouTube!

nagashima_002.thumb.jpg.b22dbbc2364b5540a887eb9fe056688c.jpg

We are all ready for the big bad roller coaster park!

nagashima_002a.thumb.jpg.58f9e6f742e8f6037d00a5bebd84ce3b.jpg

There were taxis here to meet us! Well, there was at least one....

nagashima_003.thumb.jpg.a19199b24944990013048cf7b9cd3071.jpg

But we made it! Hooray!

nagashima_004.thumb.jpg.aadd44818ade795e3f3396894da4f426.jpg

And what better way to start our day at a Japanese theme park but on a German made shuttle loop?

nagashima_005.thumb.jpg.8107f08cf436a44ce648cfdf0fc856e6.jpg

The people in the train are happy...

nagashima_006.thumb.jpg.49e3ba76b3fb2a4e4e499ea51e74b5fa.jpg

And the ride goes and does stuff. It was good.

nagashima_007.thumb.jpg.613a5a18c4bf05b2a90d04b4dbc691b8.jpg

Next up, we rode some woodie flavored roller coaster.

nagashima_008.thumb.jpg.39e4c2fc71d50efbefed3394172338c3.jpg

It tasted like wood.

nagashima_010.thumb.jpg.4d194e6e6fc64c66d082bf23300e4309.jpg

Everyone in the train the licked the track gave it a thumbs up.

nagashima_013.thumb.jpg.47aecfb215bcbe2f88ccb382753b4867.jpg

Some people made silly faces.

nagashima_014.thumb.jpg.4d5ae50833f0bb425f13e2ace3b87814.jpg

And giants rode together. Because they are cute.

nagashima_015.thumb.jpg.a87ee71c49c89fa457e2b850ad03b773.jpg

Yes, there are lots of pictures of people sitting in the station. Why? I'm not sure. Why did you click to read this report? Why are there bees in the sky?

nagashima_017.thumb.jpg.52962b7c4b3fb35e93c9017a61d0e824.jpg

This next coaster is still the longest in the world, and it's tall, but it's not the tallest anymore.

nagashima_018.thumb.jpg.6d3f43a7a89ba8f32f10f562a3d65feb.jpg

These guys licked the track.

nagashima_019.thumb.jpg.a5cc6fff4d3abd8b8c0b9548f3d9999d.jpg

It's tall and stuff.

nagashima_020.thumb.jpg.5ae6842ba98f3b0e4020cd0c515647b3.jpg

More pictures of people sitting in the train pretending to have a good time even though sitting in the train in the station is actually quite boring.

nagashima_023.thumb.jpg.ea6c90e107cc66c2d5f154a2470bef6c.jpg

This part of the ride is not boring.

nagashima_023a.thumb.jpg.465c7109cbbcd9707e473cb829aa358f.jpg

These two dudes have had a nice bromance together. They share beer and ear wax.

None of these people would survive being attacked by a bear.

nagashima_025.thumb.jpg.41bbe0269c8f9b55b352d7d49fab8a35.jpg

There is some airtime on Steel Dragon.

nagashima_028.thumb.jpg.01f0322eeb895b41a8c032135bdcc46c.jpg

The track is like 8 thousand million feet long.

nagashima_029.thumb.jpg.260be0c57fd1625ceb7237e3537491e2.jpg

Oh, we rode this too.

nagashima_030.thumb.jpg.a68798e93a070bc79f9bc2a0b7102dad.jpg

It's cool because the tracks are in the middle and stuff.

nagashima_031.thumb.jpg.6866560028c9e55dcb1fce39dbd5a086.jpg

A very small kid rode this and liked it apparently.

nagashima_032.thumb.jpg.1326ac8943e95544a6b9334f153fb742.jpg

It does this a lot and we like this.

nagashima_033.thumb.jpg.eba7c3c69d11c15345f653c044ab3780.jpg

More sitting people. Hello sitting people. How are you sitting people?

nagashima_034.thumb.jpg.3eb7dbabc64555701f2891104e5f4c73.jpg

Track and stuff.

Bumpy bumps in the bumpy rode.

nagashima_036.thumb.jpg.b74281fec49f9ca0f1f4a3b753ba016c.jpg

The ride is called "Bobkart" but it doesn't belong to a guy named "bob."

nagashima_037.thumb.jpg.c0ffaa7334eb6d353a3c8f705e9e5312.jpg

No one here in the station is named Bob.

nagashima_038.thumb.jpg.8e0aff3f971e0914dadcfde1bfb89b22.jpg

This is a ride and it was called "Cork Screw" we know this because that's what the sign said.

nagashima_039.thumb.jpg.4abc8a8e75b4b8fd80e0932bf17f7b5e.jpg

The roller coaster did loopy things.

nagashima_040.thumb.jpg.c31da8b5a8b436df4afc4f81ae9024d8.jpg

The ride goes straight down.

This haunted house had Jesus' head fly across the room. It seriously did. There's a video of it on our Facebook page.

nagashima_053.thumb.jpg.db1e8f7e8aafb681461f9f057c34ad8c.jpg

Jack no like the Ferris Wheel.

nagashima_054.thumb.jpg.35371a9db5554eb8118b72c31294efca.jpg

Jack died on the Ferris Wheel. Poor Jack.

nagashima_055.thumb.jpg.db928e001f2c993598c69ce9a3a04782.jpg

From the Ferris Wheel you can see the Space Shuttle! Is that a real Space Shuttle? I think it is a real space shuttle because it says the words "Space Shuttle" and why would you call something a Space Shuttle if it wasn't a Space Shuttle?

nagashima_056.thumb.jpg.6720191a6af542d3de9181cf04e185d3.jpg

From the Ferris Wheel you can get a view of Cedar Point.

Hello Japanese people riding German things.

nagashima_071.thumb.jpg.2873778c0bee2dc9ab3837a8c9e798fa.jpg

Dan got wet and melted. Nobody noticed.

nagashima_072.thumb.jpg.583493eaefff0845e49426f50d4c716f.jpg

This ride is at Legoland but it also here at the same time. Weird, huh?

nagashima_073.thumb.jpg.c5cbe977933db71a7613ab2750c179ba.jpg

Yay! They had a sign for my 50th Anniversary for when it will be my 50th Anniversary in the future! How nice of them!

nagashima_075.thumb.jpg.32b422f3fa6409ea1b28cb7986c5ef01.jpg

I don't know what this shirt means, but it makes me nervous.

nagashima_076.thumb.jpg.f41198362cc0707e96db9d549e757ddb.jpg

They had lots of roller coasters and rides that you could eat.

nagashima_077.thumb.jpg.40c9c20dbc6fd984c1ff21abcb7d4248.jpg

This is a puzzle, but you could probably still eat it if you wanted it to.

nagashima_078.thumb.jpg.a63a8cad4a9cba22132eb49e583dd15b.jpg

You could eat this.

nagashima_079.thumb.jpg.bfb06ec7b9896c526a04686d26c35589.jpg

And you could eat this.

nagashima_080.thumb.jpg.33c695d69bf257e73cbfefb951c0acc5.jpg

You could eat all of these things.

nagashima_081.thumb.jpg.93158c7ad73245f7833338b06a0b4e49.jpg

More stuff to eat.

nagashima_081b.thumb.jpg.0fb0d37e755ee4ee67c7c8672fb4580f.jpg

They still had funny shirts. Not as funny as before, but still funny.

nagashima_082.thumb.jpg.439e1ebec4c091ed088034cdc4bd99c8.jpg

After the park we stumbled across some truly screwed up Japanese thing. Not one of those "fake, touristy" Japanese screwed up things like Robot Restaurant that is designed to make American tourists go "wow, isn't Japan weird? Look at these pictures on my Facebook page!", but this was legit.

nagashima_083.thumb.jpg.f8339988c16685e39c36c736ac02ea37.jpg

It was sort sort of haunted themed "jail restaurant" and it was very screwed up.

nagashima_084.thumb.jpg.0f58483a1a811a20a9780dae1bafc6a3.jpg

You entered the place and sat in the demon chair.

nagashima_085.thumb.jpg.bc2f4956c8131238d6c767c28a6168f1.jpg

A doll appeared and was creepy for no reason.

nagashima_086.thumb.jpg.af88c5b644f0508e32b5bce2bca17631.jpg

Then there was a skull. None of this made any sense. But it looked cool.

nagashima_087.thumb.jpg.af94dc3add406634630daa66c0f951c5.jpg

A police lady came out and arrested me. She asked me "What bad thing did you do?" I said "RAAAAPE!!!!" And she took me away!

nagashima_088.thumb.jpg.51aee10ea3817e08272f43201fb5fb39.jpg

We were led into the cell block in which there was a "lockdown" currently in progress.

nagashima_090.thumb.jpg.512dd48f3deff33a1eeebde7829e4bf6.jpg

Police people were walking around shouting.

nagashima_091.thumb.jpg.212b632604d6e072dadeff635c8bf270.jpg

Electric guy came out screaming.

nagashima_092.thumb.jpg.fbe91bb090861a681d76d21265b0e3ed.jpg

Right in front of me electric guy was tazed and shot to death. I think he did bad stuff worse than RAAAAAPE!

nagashima_094.thumb.jpg.9280403efdc315c6e3346637bcbcf170.jpg

This was our cell, number 59, I was hoping for 69, but this was ok, too.

nagashima_095.thumb.jpg.4d292471aef81b999c63f2874283fed3.jpg

We are now locked up.

nagashima_096.thumb.jpg.767995928d2716ab8c0943493dc119d5.jpg

This is the menu full of weird shit.

nagashima_097.thumb.jpg.4d30fd2be763eb55309d8a66227bac8e.jpg

Thankfully some of it was in English, but not all of it.

nagashima_098.thumb.jpg.04c3a0c47810a269c8c5bcc6e5607a74.jpg

We decided that we needed to try everything because we were in jail.

nagashima_099.thumb.jpg.7f281e186e6618d0bc4e5d19e65e3b97.jpg

Lots more weird stuff.

nagashima_100.thumb.jpg.cf3f82b2c6858abc5d816b5f7a47ef1c.jpg

And more...

nagashima_101.thumb.jpg.090ea05fbca498c3193cbfdd11310b80.jpg

We need stuff like this in America.

nagashima_102.thumb.jpg.1ad9cdd5312be50068a0d59d917c1c5d.jpg

I ate the devil's brain and it was good.

nagashima_103.thumb.jpg.b0beddb6f3306dc7b56ca00786d1e77f.jpg

People sitting in their cells. We are all in jail for RAAAAPE!!!!

nagashima_104.thumb.jpg.fbddef6bebe64bf470bc8810c88b4d36.jpg

We had a bizarre mixture of drinks.

nagashima_105.thumb.jpg.e3e8df81e567782387b180ec65fab691.jpg

And food that looked like human hands.

nagashima_106.thumb.jpg.b569b4bb1bce4e7cd0dbea58eb74586e.jpg

We were given lots of things to add to our drinks to make us feel funny.

nagashima_107.thumb.jpg.f449cdb92a2ca80240c385b15a19c044.jpg

Derek ate an eyeball.

nagashima_108.thumb.jpg.481eff7a74f664a1d0825918ebd8e215.jpg

John just had beer. What the hell John, we are in some freaked out weird ass place and you have a beer. Ok, fine at least it looks like pee.

nagashima_109.thumb.jpg.4e9dd47d47487570aab1d35b9504b226.jpg

I have no idea what any of this is. We can only read the titles!

nagashima_110.thumb.jpg.c0d7a760d6775e0acd805335d7aeaa4f.jpg

Oh, it's french fries served in a death bag.

nagashima_111.thumb.jpg.1f81eefb8e3b1111685cd16bfee6892e.jpg

The girls liked me because I was funny looking.

nagashima_112.thumb.jpg.408d48768551b5b79dd132256c861c26.jpg

Derek decided we should all get the pills.

nagashima_113.thumb.jpg.4f2c489d3933ced83d2f918b6ce9eb9a.jpg

We had one pill each.

nagashima_114.thumb.jpg.5a8026467955fa073b1676258cfadc53.jpg

We had no idea what was in them, they didn't tell us, and it made a burning feeling going down. I think this is exactly what leads to RAAAPE!!!!

nagashima_115.thumb.jpg.398882f2425fabb52ec6d097d3d653f4.jpg

There was a skull in here. We did not have sex with it.

nagashima_117.thumb.jpg.20253738ddec56f1445ba1a9f17e9a01.jpg

Derek had a very large beer that was made to look like a very large pee glass. We think this might have actually been a lot of pee.

nagashima_118.thumb.jpg.5535e5aa20afdd6d45fc93c70517fbf1.jpg

John had a little bit of pee. But it's frothy. Just like mine! Har har, John! You think you drank beer pee? You did not! You drank Robb pee! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!!

nagashima_119.thumb.jpg.80e06bb35157e6e556cef8219775f950.jpg

And then weirder stuff happened. The inmates escaped and there was another lock down! They attacked us!

nagashima_120.thumb.jpg.680e1c5937ccc2b15daf807e4f41aa96.jpg

They tried to break into our cell!

nagashima_121.thumb.jpg.9d9d61881370f72327a04b52711933aa.jpg

Some of them made it in, but they just wanted pills and beer.

nagashima_123.thumb.jpg.2d3ea100c87f7d864856ad06a2c4b7bf.jpg

They were all creepy faced.

nagashima_124.thumb.jpg.ac75c546c856778a87dc15a716902fa7.jpg

It was all really screwed up and we couldn't understand what was going on...but it didn't matter!

nagashima_126.thumb.jpg.5b3b565624fe2026d8784da3bbce95ab.jpg

This dude just came in and hung out with us.

I don't even know what to make of this, but it was all really messed up.

The Lockup was really screwed up! There are many of these in Japan. Try it. It's really bizarre but awesome!

Lock up looks...interesting.

Nagashima Spaland was great! Their two Schwarzkopfs and Intamin Gen1 free fall are classic and intense. Steel Dragon 2000 is a big surprise, definitely better than the B&M hyper intensity I was expecting. By the way, have they always been running their flats on a lame mode. Even though they were constructing the loading platform of Giant Frisbee and dusts are flying into riders' face.

Seeing the photos from the haunted-jail restaurant makes me doubly sad that I had to back out of the Japan trip--unless those were just some Percocet-fueled illusions Robb cooked up.
