Us coaster riders have probably experienced many-a-time the loved "stomach coming up" feeling at theme parks. The question is this: Which in your opinion gives a stronger tingling sensation - drops or launches?

To prevent too many posts of "it depends", let me clarify this a little more...

By drops I mean drops that are in the 45-90 degree range...and preferably over 100 feet tall...

And by launches, I mean those that pull 1G or more (basically anything from Rock 'n Roller Coaster to Hypersonic)

Compare it in coasters if you want to (i.e "IMO, the launch on Xcellerator gives far more feelings than the drop out of the Top Hat does")

Launches give me more feelings because you are glued to your seat until the train starts to go vertical. When you are on a coaster that has a big drop you get that floating feeling. I like the feeling of drop coaster because of the feeling that you get when you are going down the drop. I like the feeling of a launch coaster but I don't like it as much as a coaster with a big drop.

Well, I'm still going to have to say it depends. I've been on a ton of coasters whose drops don't give you that feeling you get from say, Top Thrill Dragster, but there are still a few that top it. A lot of launches also don't give me that feeling anymore. I've become immune or something. I guess overall, I would have to say launches are more consistent, but there are a few coasters out there that easily top it. Cyclops is the first that comes to mind. That's not over 100ft tall, but it still gives you a much more intense feeling. Dominator in the backseat comes to mind as does PKI's Vortex in the back.

Its all depends on which coaster. Storm Runners launch does nothing for me but volcanoes still does. Hypersonic can catch me off gaurd sometimes. Hulk is still one of the good launches as well. Certain Woodies can get me every now and then. The coaster that has most intense "feeling" to me is the pretzel loop on Superman Ultimate Flight.

Launches and drops, both seem equal to me some are good and some are eh.....

I've only ridden two launching coasters: Mr. Freeze at SFSTL and Rockin' Roller Coaster. My first launch ever (Mr F) took my breath away. Actually I don't think I was able to inhale until we reached the top of the spike. Now that I've ridden this coaster dozens of times, I'm still thrilled by the launch. However, a great drop late in a wooden coaster is still my preference. There's nothing like dropping down a steep hill when the train already has a lot of speed.

I don't feel drops anymore unless they're in the 250 foot range. In other words, I only feel drops on Supreme Scream and Goliath (out of all the ones I've been on). Ghostrider will occassionally do it. Other than that, I don't really get that "stomach lurging" feeling anymore. Interestingly, I used to really be afraid of that feeling when I first went on coasters, and now I love it!

Launches definitely have more of a sustained effect. Even something like Montezooma's Revenge will affect me if I haven't been on it for a while. Xcelerator's launch is still awesome after all this time.

I prefer Drops. I love to be floating, but also, I love launched coasters. I have only been on Rock'n'Roller Coaster, The Hulk and Revenge Of The Mummy. I just love the launch on the RnCR. It is just absolutely brilliant. But I love the 2nd drop on SheiKra, especially in the back row. It is amazing, you come flying out of your seat. Also, I remember Dragon Khan, I was 8 at the time and I wasnt the correct height to go on it, so I sort of "Sneaked On!". I think it was because I wasnt the right height that made the drop brilliant.

So, to cap it off, I like Drops better. But then Launches are brilliant too.

I only got "that feeling" on Face/Off, Twisted Twins, Freefall @ SFOG, and Raptor. No other coaster has ever done it. It seems to me like the first ride of the day always affects me the most. But drop rides give me that feeling no matter when I ride them. I prefer huge drops over launches. Out of the launch coasters I have been on (Wicked Twister, FoF @ PKI, and IJST @ PKI), the launches were definately thrilling, but weren't as good to me as the first drops on rides like Gemini, Magnum XL 200, and MF.

The only launch that gets me is Storm Runner at Hershey. I really love the feeling on that launch

My fave drop is Millenium Force at the Point. That drop rocks!

Of the two favorites of mine, SR takes it But MIllie is like .01 behind!

I would say it depends, but I think this is a PREFERENCE question

Drops and launches on coasters are the same for me, I like them both. There something about your breath taken away, and I always love the view from the top. Drop/launch towers, however, the only "feeling" I get is distress. I have a fear of heights, and being dropped or launched into the air scares me. I think it's all those dreams of falling while growing up is the reason. On a coaster I feel safer. (If it's my first time on the coaster, there is a bit of that "distress feeling", but it's usually gone the second or third time around.)

Here's a thought on this matter.

Drops tend to give you an increasing feeling as you fall faster and faster. The reverse is true with launches (the most powerful feelings in lanches usually occur right when the launch starts, then slowly die away with the G-force).

Also, usually with me, the factor of how much feeling I get out of a drop sometimes seems to be not the height of the drop, but the speed at which you descend it. In fact, there are many drops that are over 100ft tall that don't give me any feelings at all, but smaller bunny hills on woodies can still give me a quick stab.

Somehow launch coasters are too fast for me to feel anything during ride and the most "feeling" is during the anticipation part when you are inside the seat waiting.

The drops gives me the most intense feeling not to mention the lift hill which is the anticipating part before the giant drop.

I would have to say, I like the feeling of drops better.. I only feel 'that feeling' on straight drops like the drops on Apollos Chariot or Sheikra, but curved drops like on Kumba do nothing for me at all.

The only launch thats ever given me any feeling is the compressed air launches (only been on Hypersonic and G-Force at Old Town). Its like the second they launch, you are at speed, no accelleration. The hydraulic launch was so-so. I rode Storm Runner, and the least impressive part to me was the launch. Maybe cause I hyped it up too much in my mind.. I thought if Hypersonic's launch was great, SR's had to be amazing. I havent been on the Stratas yet though, so I might change my mind about launches after riding those... if they can ever stay open during the time I visit the parks they are in!

I have to say drops...

I'd take a nice lifthill to an incredible drop over a launch any day. But, if there is a launch that shoots you up and leads into an incredible airtime hill and drop, then I'm all for that, best of both worlds!

Depends on the drop and the launch.

If its powerful(launch or drop), I like it.

Xcelerators launch is great but Supermans just sucks.

Between a really good drop and a really good launch, I'd say whichever ones more powerful!

Launches are intense being glued to the back of the seat and all, but I'd much rather be flying out of my seat on a great drop.

Drops: esp when it is angled up to 70% and you think your gonna come out of your seat and hit the ground.

I can't get enough of Camel back hills.

Not keen of strong launches as this makes me go "dizzy".
