paintballer
If it is smooth as I think it will be I believe will take #1 Wooden Rollercoaster again. It's like it's rising from the ashes Long time observer but first time poster.....I'm sorry to say this is no longer a wooden rollercoaster...However, it's not to say it will not be good...A matter a fact it may be great...But to classify this as a wooden coaster is wrong...It's as much as a wooden coaster as Voyage or Cyclone(Coney) would be considered a steel coaster...I will miss the Texas Giant(Wooden) the early years that is... Well, Everywooden rollercoaster has some metal in the track, Your not riding on pure wood.
thrillrideseeker
Your not riding on pure wood. Oh? . . . I am trying to refrain from a sexual comment!! Any who... Now that I have moved back home Six Flags is much closer to me, so maybe when this beast is finished being "fixed" I can get down there to see what its like! I am hoping that it turns out to be as good as I am thinking it is going to be! ~Matthew Edited March 4, 2010 by thrillrideseeker
txmikey
RCDB has changed their classification of TG from WOOD to STEEL. Also, ACE's web site has a brief front page article now declaring it a steel coaster and mentioning the shocked and disappointed reaction of the woodie fans in the enthusiast community. I'm looking forward to following the construction process and riding the new ride. But as a longtime Giant rider and fan (my unquestionable #1 for several years before it began wearing down from many dry and blistering Texas summers), I'm also a bit bummed that the park will be down to one true woodie. I'd have much rather they just leveled the ride, called Intamin and built the El Toro of the south than what they're doing. But like I said, I'm sure I'll still enjoy the new ride for what it is...if it's as spectacular (and smooth) as the hype. It'll be interesting to watch if SF sticks to their guns about the steepest WOODIE claim in the face of it so obviously losing that distinction. paintballer
I hate this, now Texas only has 3 wooden rollercoasters...2 of which suck.
ginzo
Does anyone else think Six Flags purposefully did this to make coaster enthusiasts have insane, circular arguments for the next year or so? Considering their recent insistence that this is a "WOODEN" coaster, you might be on to something. acq10uaz
Isn't it becoming a steelie?RT @SixFlags Correct - New Texas Giant has steepest WOODEN coaster drop in the world. Can't wait to test it out! Six Flags response: @coastertouring Umm...sorta? It's still a wooden coaster but there'll be steel components. A hybrid perhaps? This will be interesting... CoasterPrince
79 Degrees on a steel coaster isn't anything but 79 degrees on a woodie is insane. Which one is this?

robbalvey
^ And if the new track ends up turning it even into a "good" ride, then that's a HUGE improvement! Regardless if it's a wood or steel coaster.

cfc
^ And if the new track ends up turning it even into a "good" ride, then that's a HUGE improvement! Regardless if it's a wood or steel coaster. Amen. For me, a coaster has to meet one basic criterion: "Is the damn thing any fun at all?"
DBJ
I really hope this works out for the ride. If it does go from a below average wood coaster to a great "steel" coaster, I doubt very much the "woodie" fan community would really even care. Wouldn't they be more concerned with whether or not the ride is a good coaster? I certainly would not mind seeing SFMM's Colossus or Knott's Ghostrider receiving the same treatment. Wouldn't they be more concerned with whether or not the ride is a good coaster? Have you seen how some nut jobs refuse to give El Toro or Balder proper credit? Now we have the Hermaphroditic Giant. Some wood traditionalists are likely to bash it whether it is classified as Steel (which it clearly is) or Wood.
kidcoaster 2
Oh yeah I agree there are some who won't like the changes but if it will save a crappy ride back into a great one than I am all for it. With that said I hope that after this happens and if it is successful that some other park/operators will take note. And concider this for some of their woodies that are have fallen into disrepair. OFFice357
Unless they repaint the track, I can see a red, white, and blue color scheme. I think it would look weird for something of that size though.

G$ Kurt
Thank you Six Flags for making my baby (Gemini a.k.a. G$) popular in discussions again. haha. This certainly is exciting though and there is no debate, it's a steel hybrid now. I never rode old Texas Giant but will certainly go ride this! You can call me surprised about the direction this "refurbishment" is going!
carolinacaniac
I have to admit that my first couple rides on it a couple days before the TPR Texas trip, I thought it was pretty bad ass! The next day, I wanted nothing more than to amputate my legs, and again when I rode with Shane, Luko and Derick the night TPR was there. I am really curious to see how this turns out, but I think it is safe to say that this is a hybrid like many mine rides, and the changes I think are significant enough to compare it to when Steel Phantom became Phantom's Revenge. -Gary "I am all for it too if it turns into a fun ride" T. Coasterfrk49
I don't think anyone knows how this change is really going to turn out. The end result could be a huge success or it could blow up in the face of Six Flags. Whether you like the change or not, you at least can't knock Six Flags for trying something new and different here. I'm sure the publicity is good for the park. I do have to say that I'm glad they chose to try this on a coaster that was getting rough and really showing its age, like I've heard Texas Giant was. This would have been a awful project to try the "Bizarro route" (that is, making unnecessary changes to an already nearly perfect ride).
