Martin and Cheryl Go to Hong Kong

Recommended Posts

Cheryl and I started off 2014 with a bang by visiting the parks of Hong Kong. We started with Hong Kong Disneyland, so here's a portion of that first day. Enjoy the video of Mystic Manor that Robb has graciously posted!

This was an incredibly long flight, against the jet stream.

I looked at the video of MM earlier, Martin. And I thought it was

really the best POV of the attraction I have see so far. Great!

And I miss Chef Mickeys. Great buffet, breakfast and dinner.

This was a surprise. I've never seen Main Street U.S.A. unfinished like this before. Anyone know the story?

They actually do those "themed scaffolding covers" whenever they are doing work on a building. I see them at MK and DL quite often during the off-season. I guess you've just been lucky to go to a Disney park when they aren't doing work on one of the buildings.

Personally, I think it's quite cool that they actually theme the scaffolding as to not make it stand out quite as much!

Hong Kong Disney is a very nice park. Runaway Mine Cars is a fun coaster, and Mystic Manor looks great.

The Hollywood Hotel was great, too.

Mystic Manor continues to move higher up in my must ride list, as does visiting Hong Kong Disneyland. Thanks for the updates and excited for part 2.

This. Thanks for the pictures Martin, love the ToT cameo! I had no idea that was there

We did two days at HK Disneyland, but I've already messed with the photo sequence, so I'm going to try to force some temporal order on this photo TR. So let's go on to Day 2, when we visited Ocean Park!

001.thumb.jpg.8ee5ae7af2a4a93ef7ad1eace0130bd4.jpg

Take the Hong Kong MTR to Admiralty and find Exit B.

002.thumb.jpg.23ee8c26e509be092abd80deb29db884.jpg

Hop on Bus 629 and it takes you right to Ocean Park.

003.thumb.jpg.b2a02f0ab93c0d49dfdb73704f72c716.jpg

You go up a big escalator.

004.thumb.jpg.a11afe568d4d31784fbda59d37d2a86d.jpg

And you're there. We arrived pretty early. They open the gate but then you have to wait a while before they drop the rope. It got really crowded. I read that they had to close the gates during the Chinese New Year holidays.

005.thumb.jpg.486cd89c56277d9631671275e0af81c2.jpg

The place is HUGE.

006.thumb.jpg.8d6ca448e37f8cc43dc320891766b0f9.jpg

We got to say hello to Tom Mehrmann before the park opened. And Walter Kerr too, but we didn't get a picture. These are some of the the people behind Ocean Park's transformation into a Applause Award Winner.

007.thumb.jpg.94afe150220804d01a34fe6e8eb55eba.jpg

They have this crazy steampunk funicular up the mountain.

008.thumb.jpg.b0dfaeddc4f771a6fc3c25b121b6c3cf.jpg

Steampunk!

009.thumb.jpg.c9d4e6d0dc473fb8472393f96e68a4ef.jpg

It's more like a ride than a tramway.

010.thumb.jpg.8919bbf36b4e40fec3d655aab1984517.jpg

Thrill Mountain is this section.

011.thumb.jpg.de4888d6d3b58dfe1cd6f2b209e7bba1.jpg

There's Hair Raiser.

012.thumb.jpg.7ddd45fe82beb11d2d1c767599f23f88.jpg

Great views from the queue.

013.thumb.jpg.1883a9726b9fa1d604b018c89f96dc46.jpg

It's a great coaster and it's on top of a mountain, so it's really cool. Unfortunately I hadn't worn my contact lenses and they would not allow eyeglasses, even with a good retainer. Of course nothing grinds my gears more than a no-glasses rule.

014.thumb.jpg.e61686eec82ec4c8cd64b10da01a1a14.jpg

You can walk around forever. It's a huge mountain.

015.thumb.jpg.bb2c3d661106d867c68f04899b05ed39.jpg

If you need to rest, you can sit on ice cream containers.

016.thumb.jpg.eeeb9eee9395da4d24474859ec38f702.jpg

The Dragon is the next credit.

017.thumb.jpg.d3b19c2f744a542ca0dd62d5c7968215.jpg

More great views.

018.thumb.jpg.644c39802d86e2e1d8384f31fe59c4db.jpg

There's an animal hospital and we found some dolphins.

019.thumb.jpg.36340e6269a5b9a7af7853322ca00dc2.jpg

And the classic Ocean Park credit, Wild West Mine Train.

020.thumb.jpg.28e3b93f87a7d73758c12b7b269ee6ad.jpg

Burned again.

021.thumb.jpg.f877a9637b0439a4b712431baf1730fc.jpg

We had not made inquiries about closures.

022.thumb.jpg.10dd9c95ac18e1e0e269ee478f58dd5e.jpg

We'll be back when Iron Man is done at Disney.

023.thumb.jpg.afad3ad6c003323d7e1d7a8e1e872689.jpg

This was a nice sea lion and seal exhibit.

024.thumb.jpg.b50c7bbc2bb1106e4ef0ef43bb003126.jpg

Seal. But he did not perform "Kiss From a Rose" for us.

025.thumb.jpg.bacad5029eac9943ed31ea6681169335.jpg

And a lot of sea lions basking in the sun. The way to tell them apart is that sea lions have external ears.

026.thumb.jpg.7672ae3e1a2d16afbaf123376eaf8ee5.jpg

These birds were available for contact.

027.thumb.jpg.75b3cdc33e3b5fda7ca1a107f8965d88.jpg

These birds were not available for contact.

028.thumb.jpg.df7462f5e3a02faf38b8e7298a7d1b8d.jpg

Tuxedos was the penguin-themed restaurant.

029.thumb.jpg.d87044a84fea85ed11ab593bd5c777c7.jpg

These were penguin-theme flower topiary.

030.thumb.jpg.581e6e4c5aac53e84deda8083052e020.jpg

You can watch the penguins in the restaurant.

031.thumb.jpg.4dea9296c5480d46beda6db9887c66f0.jpg

And you can measure the carbon footprint of your meal. Clever.

032.thumb.jpg.0257fd513db341bb25fc395958a9dbfe.jpg

The Sea Jelly Spectacular was cool.

033.thumb.jpg.e589baad43c751bc03422a8779042604.jpg

Soundtrack and colored lighting combine with jellyfish to create a spectacular show.

034.thumb.jpg.d7c6be28c9666cfcb8ea77921797d2a0.jpg

There was an aquarium for Chinese Sturgeon.

035.thumb.jpg.0cbf7a1ee008e464f84ed1b03b875cfe.jpg

See how massive these fish are! There is another huge aquarium closer to the park entrance as well, but we did not visit.

Cheryl with sturgeon-themed flower topiary.

037.thumb.jpg.db0e43c06143938777b97b9efcea5519.jpg

Good views from the observation tower.

038.thumb.jpg.850c8bde1b76ce05f562dc369c409ad4.jpg

We had to wait on line for this one. The park got more and more crowded during the day. Lots of mainland Chinese. But this ride didn't disappoint.

039.thumb.jpg.baf2f818e793f4cc1b35a96524217242.jpg

There's the Thrill Mountain section.

040.thumb.jpg.ef1a6ea9641eaf4e8321ebd4a2adb829.jpg

We were pretty exhausted from walking around so much. We took the gondolas back down the mountain.

I liked this little section callled Old Hong Kong. I have a romantic image of places like Hong Kong and Singapore and what they were like back in the 1920s and 1930s, before WWII. Images of Singapore on Sentosa captures it well, if you get a chance to go there.

044.thumb.jpg.a47a79bc883068d2ac15c17bd0661e59.jpg

We hit the Panda exhibit.

045.thumb.jpg.16209fbbf71302cd706162da24a60389.jpg

And the goldfish exhibit. If you like goldfish, this is the place for you. They had a billion different varieties of goldfish.

046.thumb.jpg.5431058ecd8d15ca925d4156461dc7e3.jpg

Here's the Applause Award. Liseberg gives out this award every two years. We've been to all of the winning parks except for the defunct Opryland. Ocean Park is definitely worth a visit if you're a serious theme park enthusiast.

047.thumb.jpg.464c162a5b34adfa3456b4ada7f40382.jpg

And one last note: We really enjoyed the food in Hong Kong. We went to Din Tai Fung the first night, and found this hole in the wall, Mak Man Kee Noodle Shop at 51 Parkes Street near Yau Ma Tei and Jordan MTR stops. We had to share a table with strangers, but it was awesome. My former student who is from Hong Kong and lives there said: "You're eating like a local!" when I posted this to Facebook. Thanks to everyone for checking out this report! More Hong Kong Disneyland to come! Next!

I shouldn't say this, but Cheryl and I went to an orthodox Jewish wedding a few weeks ago, and with the separated gender dancing, I kept joking that all the men dancing in a circle together in their dark suits looked like "March of the Penguins".

And Chuck, thank you for bringing Burgess Meredith to life again, if just for a moment.

Honey Mustard Popcorn!?!? Did you try it!?!?

Gotta agree it was delicious, we saw it only on one stand near Grizzly but it was very popular and was gone everytime we tried to get some. Finally managed to get a box of it on our last day.
